Pittsburgh has the firepower on offense to score a flood of points on a weekly basis -- and it might need to.

The Steelers' defense has allowed a whopping 26 points per game over four preseason tilts under new coordinator Keith Butler. These games can be shrugged off as meaningless, but the concern in Pittsburgh is real over an overhauled unit just nine days away from facing the Patriots in the opener.

"I don't think we're in a panic mode," said safety Mike Mitchell, per Chris Bradford of The Beaver County Times. "I don't think the coaches are in an panic mode."

The worst of it came in Saturday's 43-19 exhibition loss to the Bills, a defeat that saw Buffalo pile up 542 total yards on offense with a wild 27 first downs. Bills quarterbacks -- the butt of jokes all summer -- blew up Pittsburgh's secondary to go a combined 30-of-33 passing for 386 yards with three touchdowns and zero picks.

"I don't know the particular cause, but I would say it's just unacceptable," said defensive end Cameron Heyward, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "They beat us on all ends. When it rains it pours; that was a clear example out there."

It hasn't been a smooth transition for Pittsburgh after losing a once-in-a-generation play-caller in Dick LeBeau and watching eight-time Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu retire along with outside linebacker Jason Worilds and cornerback Ike Taylor.

The many new faces have shown moments of promise, but the Steelers are running out of time to figure it out before the results get real.

The first rule of Panic Mode is: You do not talk about Panic Mode

Spike, thanks for providing this article but it makes me feel worse than I already feel. I keep telling myself that this defense can't possibly be this bad. Geez, the Bills played without their starting receivers and running backs and four duds at QB and made this look way too easy. I just think Mitchell is full of crap and frankly he's part of the problem. This defense has absolutely zero pass rush and I just don't know where the hell its going to come from in the next week.

I know we need to score plenty just to keep us in games but that's a concern as well. I'm still not sold completely on this OL even though they played better as a unit last year. We're starting off on a bad note without Pouncey and the loss of Bell for two games. Now we lose a major threat in Bryant for four games. This is getting ugly fast. The only real solid OL are DeCastro and Beachum while Foster and Gilbert to me are just guys and nothing more.

I managed to put myself through that entire fiasco on Saturday and couldn't remember the last time preseason or regular season when a Steeler defense just couldn't stop the other team. Very troubling. I need a ******* drink. Anyway, thanks for the article.

So either we are massively overreacting to a messy preseason or the Steelers efense is utterly clueless and in denial... hmmm im not sure I like those choices

I report, you decide

On one hand they've been holding Timmons back because of his toe, on the other hand I think we all knew the Efense (thanks mad) was going to be a dumpster fire this year.
And no, it wouldn't be better if DLB, Keisel, Taylor, and Polamalu were still here.

Our defense is this bad. We have a serious lack of depth of talent and we don't generate nearly enough havoc with a front 4 rush. The Tampa - 2 worked great when you have All-pro Warren Sapp, Simeon Rice, and Co. The departure of talent that Casey Hampton and Aaron Smith brought to the table began the demise of a quality defensive product. We escaped most teams without having elite corners and still were top 5 defense. I don't mean to bring up the old days, but its just to make a point that I have no faith in the current Steeler defensive unit. We have a couple all-pro's Heyward & Timmons, but everybody else are backups in talent with the opportunity to start on a below average unit. Deebo is exempt because he is who he is, but Shazier, Tuitt, Javis, and everyone else should be backups if we had existing quality players playing ahead of them.

The facts are Ben is going to have to play like he did vs. the Colts last year, which we still gave up 30+ points too.

Fist step is ADMITTING you have a problem.

I am still waiting on a first step.

We are going to give up 28-32 pts/game this season so, technically, we are doing fine. Actually, better than expected so there is no reason for panic.

I'm willing to wait and see the first 15- to - 45 seconds of actual regular season play, before I make my judgement call.

Salute the nation

Maybe it's time to get in the panic mode

I am not so much in defense panic mode.

But safety panic mode with two often injured starting S's might be warranted........

hi

Mike Mitchell is not in panic mode. Meanwhile, this is Steeltime's mode:

I would have felt a lot better if they displayed ANY sense of urgency whatsoever. That performance was a problem.

I'm so tired of Mike Mitchell talking. So. Tired.

Well, at least they were able to interview Mitchell since he can't seem to get his injured *** on the field.

With their inaction, the steelers have told us that they feel good with Mitchell and Shamarko at Safety. That means they believe Mitchell will be injury free and that his ****** play last year was all due to injury. It also says that even though Shamarko rarely played even as a reserve, that they are confident he can plug right in there and start.

They better play the defensive starters extended minutes in this last preseason game because they have barely played together. I don't want to hear any nonsense about not wanting to show their hand to New England. NE is a team that lives to exploit mistakes. They routinely bait dumb or inexperienced DBs into mistakes and create big plays.

You're not going to confuse Belichick for longer than a series or two. And if using cover 2 is your big strategy then you won't fool a high school team with that.

The only people who seem to not understand how a cover 2 works are playing for the steelers.

I'm envisioning Jimmy Grape Nuts sitting back in the pocket, all day to throw while Heyward is double teamed and Jarvis flops around like a fish. Shamarko and Mitchell both bite on a curl route and old man Reggie Wayne runs free for a long TD. Cut to Tomlin in his shades giving a hard look but not saying ****.

I have no idea why they did not draft Adrian Amos when he was sitting there for him. He has starting experience at Safety, as well as outside CB and inside CB. His slow 40 time was 4.4 and he was one of the smarter players.

The knock was that he's not a big hitter. Who gives a ****? God forbid the Steelers have a DB that is good at covering people and not just hitting them hard (and drawing a penalty) after the catch.

Amos has already won the starting S job with the Bears.

The steelers better start valuing the wonderlic a bit more because their problem on defense is too many dumb players.

We also have to start wondering if Lake is a ****** DB coach, although coaching DBs is supposed to be Tomlin's specialty.

Evidently they say in the theatre that poor dress rehearsal leads to a fantastic opening night. I remember reading that somewhere.

Anyway, hopefully that piss poor showing up in Buffalo will lead to good things next Thursday.

It's better than sitting around moping.

I know Lake had some early success.

But you wonder a little when your OLBs and S's struggle who are both coached by players rich on playing experience but short on coaching experience.

It could be ****** drafting

orrrrrrrr someone isn't coaching them up....

one of the two?

or perhaps something inbetween

So at the end of the season it'll come out that Mitchell is suffering from an undisclosed brain injury as an excuse for his preposterous preseason statements

I would tell the offense to slow it down. The defense needs to be on the field as little as possible. I dont think this plays to our offenses strenghts, but I think its our best shot at winning. I do believe that the D will be no where near as bad as the preseason though

You're crazy

Score 40 points and hope our defense can get a stop or two.

5 WIDE *******!!!

Like that

I didn't mind our draft, but he was one of the guys I wanted for the reasons you cited. I was ready for another intelligent safety in the backfield. One who may not fly around the field making plays, but rather is always in the right position to make them.
