Jordan DeFigio, @fidgenewton SteelerNation.com After yet another 60 minute period of absolutely owning*Philip Rivers,*Pittsburgh Steelers’ cornerback*Mike Hilton has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week. Hilton made several plays against the*Colts that kept momentum on the Steelers’ side and in part was a huge reason why they were able to mount a second […]

If Mike Hilton was 6'1 instead of 5'9 he would be on a massive contract already. He could play safety and be a Jamal Adams. He is so instinctive. I'm a big fan of Sutton too. But I think he projects better as a True Corner where Hilton is a very instinctive inside guy and better tackler. Mike Hilton will make bank next year as the most sought after Nickle DB in FA. He will be 6 per million minimum probably. And he has earned it. Congratulations Mike on the award and the future paycheck. Well earned.

You're right sask, and he's worth every penny of a 6-7M contract. The Steelers would be fortunate to retain him for that.

I think it will be tough. He has had a great attitude but the Steelers got the milk without buying the Cow with Hilton. He is going to get every cent of his value. I don't expect him back.

As they should. He is a playmaker. You don't let those types leave.

Definitely a deserving award, we'll miss Hilton next year.

He is playing himself into contract we cant afford. but we have had him on the cheap for years. certainly got our moneys worth out of him.

Steelers need to cut some guys to keep Hilton and Sutton. It’s be completely unacceptable in successive years to lose Hargrave, Dupree, Sutton, Hilton, Conner, JuJu, etc.

Mostly they have to extrnd guys out... cutting most of them doesn’t really do much... extend ben out a couple years... bam.....get rid of the deficit that might exist next season
Extend tge two starting cbs a couple years or cut one and extend the other...

They likely cut Vance and maybe Vince, most of the others are going to be just moving money around...

And i still refuse to believe that once the huge ufa class sees the actual money that’s going to be out there that they don’t increase it by 10 to 15 million per team... otherwise like 60% of them are taking huge pay cuts

As tough as it is, I'm a believer in the phrase it's better to get rid of a guy a year too early rather than a year too late. Of course a lot will also do with what happens with Roethlisberger's contract.

CUT CANDIDATES

Joe Haden - The guy feels like he's been on the Steelers forever, but he's 31 and at some point his play will fall off. He is entering the final year of his contract and will save $7 million.

Maurkice Pouncey - I know he wants to go out with Ben and if Ben comes back he'll likely finish out his contract. His play has fallen off and there are some solid centers coming out in the draft. He'd save $8 million.

Eric Ebron or Vance McDonald - Ebron saves $6 million and McDonald saves $5.2 million. Be bold and cut both. I think Ebron stays because he has produced in the red zone and I think would've had a better year if the Steelers threw down field more.

Vince Williams - How good do you feel moving forward with Bush and Spillane? He'd save $4 million.

EXTENSION CANDIDATES

David DeCastro - He's 30 years old and I think will be better next year after a full offseason to get healthy.

Steven Nelson - He's only 27 and is pretty affordable, especially given his production.

RESTRUCTURE CANDIDATES

Stephon Tuitt and Cam Heyward

They may not be woodson, or deon sanders caliber, but im pretty happy with our corners , comparing them to previous ones the last 8 years

I feel like they will extend haden out a couple more years.... But ive been wrong about that position before...

Pouncey I could definitely see, but i think its better to have a plan in hand when you move on from him... ypu will be able to get a real solid guy in the second round but i dont think there is a plug and play talent at center this year... probably will be a year away.. the last thing we need is a question at center... centers usually last pretty long in the league... he isnt at the drop off point for two more years really, so one more wont hurt

I agree they will keep Ebron and find a cheaper blocking Than than Vance

Vince.. id love to keep him, but honestly Spillane might be the guy for that role and Avery Williamson is Probably actually better than Vince and will come cheaper and will know the system...

I'm thinking they will keep at least one of the two in Hilton (priced out) and Sutton. Conner (as much as I love him / story) is replaceable in a 4th round RB pick (maybe 3rd).

Salute the nation

This is why we're starting to lose young, talented players. Cornerbacks peak around 27-28 so how much more do you expect out of Haden at 32 years old?

I would keep Sutton and Hilton and give Haden his walking papers. At least Hilton and think about bringing a younger corner in. One of the two.
