In the fourth, we had the ball 3rd and six or whatever, Ben scrambled right and found Samuels or McDonald down the right side line behind the defender for a first down, NE used a timeout after that.
Next play Samuels bust a nice run for a first down, NE got called for a hold, 5 yards added onto the run. Why did the clock stop after that play, it didn't start again until we snapped the ball on the next play.
Defensive penalty
Samuels wasn't out of bounds
NE didn't use a timeout.

Yep, I was absolutely puzzled by this. That clock should have been running.

Call from the league office, to keep the game winnable by the *’s.

I feel like you have to be right on this Coolie, but it is a ridiculous rule. Getting a penalty should never work to your advantage. Like work the mechanics of the call. Accepted penalty clock stops. Declined, clock starters on play whistled in. It should be as though it never happened.

I thought the rule was that under 5 minutes a penalty stops the clock until the snap unless it is a pre-snap offensive penalty.....
So basically, the defense should hold on every running play, if the penalty gets called, then the clock stops for them.
Thats a dumbass rule

Yeah Coolie is right. Mystery solved. Last 5 minutes of second half. For the love of God I cannot imagine why but that is the rule.

I was pissed about that one. He initially said down by contact which is totally challengeable. Then he changed it to forward progress which is not. That was laughable.

I was so pissed at that. how do you change the call after a challenge flag is thrown?

yeah a few unkind words were expressed about that bullshit.....

um, yeah, we misspoke...the ruling was not down by contact, the runner's forward progress was stopped...can't let the patsies fumble here......

If it's under 5min, the clock should have started when the ball was spotted (since the clock was in motion at the time the penalty was called). Otherwise the defense gets a benefit of stopping the clock with a penalty, which is not in the rules.

If the penalty was declined, would the clock not have started immediately? It was already going to be a first down.
No matter, I suppose. We needed every yard on that drive that ended in the FG that saved Boswell's job for another week.

It was added to the end of the run, so I don't even know if there was the option to decline
