Here's a great article by Alex Kozora (my favorite Steeler writer), describing why the Steelers only have 3 OLBs on the roster. Great insight, and interesting to see how versatile Thomas is. He's going to see the field a lot!

And as I touched on the depth chart the other day, nothing is locked in. Mike Tomlin obviously as the younger players improve, they will be shuffled in with more playing time.

It wouldn't shock me to see Thomas get a start at ILB or OLB if a short or long term injury shows itself.

Depending on how well he has grasped his playbook.

I would think we would see him at ILBer first, but you definitely can't rule anything out with his skill set.

You're right Cope, Thomas is another great camp story. Worrisome though that we only have 3 olb's with Watt injury ?'s, Dupree ?'s, and Ola Adeneyi IR'ed. Hoping we don't wear him out, but sure glad he's a Steeler.

Shouldn't be a problem with a part time player. That worry would only come if he was a full time starter.

I can’t get the fact out of my mind that this kid was a five star recruit coming out of HS. That is extremely impressive.

So maybe it was a lack of maturity while at FSU that never let him live up to his five star status, I don’t know, but glad we have him. If Tomlin, Butler and Jerry O can tap into Matthew’s potential and his maturity, then we have a five star linebacker.

I see nothing but positive for this guy. He will be strong wherever he is lined up and will keeping rising to his abilities as he gets more playing time. I realize rookie moments will happen but am acceptable with the potential benefits profited from such play. CRAZY prediction, Pro Bowl or Rookie / defensive player of the week candidate.

Salute the nation

A top ten overall recruit. His SPRAQ score was off the charts good!

Why wasn't Thomas drafted? Could it have been some off the field stuff not picked up by the media? The production, stats, and work out numbers suggest he should have been drafted.

hopefully in some pure passing sets they put him at MLB in the 3-2-6
