By Jonathan Clark SteelerNation.com In the 2018 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Oklahoma State QB Mason Rudolph with the 76th pick of the third round. At the time, this pick was looked at as quite possibly the steal of the draft. Many scouts/experts had a first round grade on Rudolph, and the fact that […]

No one wants a season with Mason. If We don't have a starting QB that's not on the team today other then a motivated Ben then we're looking at 8-8 At best. Cam Newton is in their sites right now. I do believe that would be a good move till we get a new Franchise QB even if as a back up.

Cam was **** at the end of last season. Zero accuracy, even on the short stuff. Hard, hard pass.

Floating pass on Mason.

Hopefully Canada can get Lynch to play to his potential - infinity and beyond!

Cam Newton is so over rated. He's only had 3 seasons where his completion % was above 60.

Sorry but Cam just doesn't fit my Black and Gold mold

Cam is NOT going to be a STEELERS player this year, next year or forever land year. His game was in his legs which now he doesn't seem to posses that threat so he has to use what's between his ears and that's been likened to "Dust in the Wind".

NOTE: Nice write up Jonathan, informative opinion piece. Thank You

I still have hope that he can progress and be more than a backup. He's got the tools and if he could be tweaked in some important ways he could still be THE guy.

I think having a QB coach for him will help immensely. He will be fine backing Ben. We will have to see if he can be more.

Mason Rudolph seems to have a Neil O'Donnell sort of ceiling. I guess we'll see how much that concussion has really effected him. The lack of offensive identity doesn't help much either. What do we do well as an offense? What's our system? I can't answer any of those questions because we don't appear to have one. Any QB will struggle in that environment.

Slaine, Randy Fitchner needs to step up. Granted he had a lot of injuries to deal with but you have to bend your system to fit the Personel available. He (Fitchner) didn't do a lot of creative play calling to compensate. Defenses knew the plays based on Personel package and thus could pin ears back and Rush QB. I get the depth players not being able to execute as well as starters but OC has to find plays to compensate as well. Randy needs to adjust a little better as well as step up his game and improve coaching wise.

This is what I’m thinking the Steelers are doing.
Scenario one- Roethlisberger comes back healthy and plays out the final two years of his contract and retires. If Rudolph shows enough they use some of that cap savings sign him to a deal and hand him the reigns.

Scenario two. Roethlisberger comes back healthy and Lynch vs Rudolph fight it out to be the 2020 backup. Lynch wins. Lynch gets a backup deal after 2020 (3 year 10 million) and Ben and Rudolph aren’t on the team in 2022, steelers use a high draft pick in 2022 to compete with Lynch.

Scenario three. Roethlisberger comes back healthy but Rudolph and Lynch don’t develop enough for the team to feel comfortable after Ben retires. 2021 let Lynch walk and draft a QB high. 2022 sign stop gap veteran. If team tanks and rookie doesn’t look like the future draft top 10 QB

Scenario four. Roethlisberger doesn’t come back healthy and it is the Rudolph & Lynch show in 2020. If neither look to be the future the Steelers draft a first round QB in 2021.

Newton sucks. Steelers will draft a qb next spring. Write it down!

I don’t think the cap would drop. What I feel like the owners and players union would do is not increase the cap until the revenue lost was made up. So a team loses 100 million in 2020. Maybe they spread that hit over 5 years and the cap remains the same.

Schefter is throwing out speculative knowledge. No way the cap drops 30%. There would be no football. The NFLPA wouldn't allow their players to play under the market value for the rules established in the most recent CBA. If they are still putting a product on TV, they will be paid MORE during these times, because the numbers of the captivated audience increases the viewership by 30-40%. Case in point, the draft. Which got prime time game ratings this year.

This poor idea will never see the light of day, and shouldn't even be discussed before the season outcome is known.

Things you CAN speculate on:

If the NFL cancels this year, do players earn an acquired season against their remaining contract?

Now that is an article. Looks like I have something to work on...

Add to that and maybe it's been stated but if the season is cancelled will the players be paid anyway ?

.

not sure how the TV contracts work...does the NFL get paid more when viewership goes up? I thought the networks bid more of a flat rate, but i don't really know. I suppose there could be escalators with increased views. One thing that may come into play is streaming. NFL has been playing with their Rewind package. I could see them adding a pay per game stream model which could have a big uptick in direct revenue. The issue there is it is all replay now...if they go live they may have some contract conflicts with live broadcasters.

No, networks compete for airing NFL games. It's why they change networks over time. NFC games used to be on NBC, before FOX made a better offer, and that solidified that network. Mostly the NFL's leverage is to present increases in viewership to higher expected payments for broadcasting the season. So if no one can go to games, and everyone is stuck at home, viewership will increase significantly. The NFL would use that leverage to get more money from the networks. You can't change a contract mid contract, but this is a network contract year, that's why the 2 sides agreed on the CBA so quickly, because it means a direct increase in revenue for all this season into next. Which in turn is supposed to have the salary cap go up significantly next year.

Good points on streaming, replays and PPVs, those are all increases in revenue as well!

So, in short you're saying
"If you have red paint, you paint the barn red" ..... A Tomlinism I'd like to see them actually implement on offense. The problem last year was they only had about a quart of paint to paint the whole barn.

I would like to see what Matt Canada can do with Rudolph. I feel if he didn’t see anything salvageable in him the Steelers would’ve either drafted a QB or brought in a veteran already. (That can still happen). Hopefully Canada can have an impact on this kid.
