Mason Rudolph Next in Line?

I'll say this, I think Canada will make a BIG difference in the QB play but an even bigger difference in Randy Fitchner play (one can hope).

Funny thing .... people tend to work harder/give better results when they know their possible successor is in the building. With OC's, that threat can sometimes be the QB Coach. Last year (and the year before) Fitchner didn't have that threat hanging over his head. He was the QB Coach. The WR coach was an older coach or an older coach who was the replacement for the beloved WR coach who passed. The RB coach was either older or new. The OL coach was busy training his replacement and then gone. All that, plus his relationship with Ben, provided Fitch with a built in level of job security. Hopefully the hiring of Canada, and the threat it represents, brings about some ingenuity in Fitch. If not, let's hope that 1. Tomlin pulls the trigger and jettisons his *** and 2. Canada is up to the task.

Canada is, in this case, the sword of Damocles.

I said it last season and I'll say it again. The degree of stupidity demonstrated by the coaching staff and ownership in NOT bringing in any kind of QB coach when the franchise QB went down and you KNEW you had to go with ultimately 2 completely inexperienced guys is staggering.

How do they NOT do everything in their power to help those guys be as effective as possible?

We already know Tomlin doesn't teach. He motivates. Well, those guys needed ******* teachers.
not bringing a qb coach... most good coaches were under contract already. possible there was nobody available that they liked? hell, they had to get shermab out of retirement when coach drake passed. my guess is pickings were slim to none

The sign Cam Newton talk is heating up in the FB groups.
People are stupid. I need to start betting money with them and supplement my income.
I try to talk sense to them but it's no use.

Barring preseason injury, the QB depth chart will look like this:
1. Ben
2. Mason
3. Duck.

Duck might be on the bubble but Mason isn't going anywhere yet. If they replace him it will look like the FO made a mistake and we know how much the FO likes to admit mistakes.

I don't understand the misplaced angst toward a QB that had a winning record, and positive TD/INT ratio in his first season of play, when he wasn't even prepared to be the starter all preseason, or taking many 1st team snaps. That's un ******* real people. QB's are supposed to throw more INTs than TDs their first year. They're supposed to lose more than win their first year. They don't go 13-0 like Ben did.

Mason is a 5-3 QB with 13TDs to 9INTs. If you don't believe he can improve from that, you've never watched a QB develop in this league before...

I agree with some of this, but Mason was in year 2, so he's had plenty of mini camp, training camp, preseason reps, and time to know the playbook inside out.

I think the biggest issue alot have with him, well at least I do is the eye test, his arm is kind of weak, he struggles on the throws that need to be on a rope, his longer passes have alot of air under them, and he looks unsettled in the pocket at the first sign of pressure.

I'm not writing him off, of saying what we saw is the finished product.

Personally I think Rudolph will progress this year and prove to be a more than adequate backup. Whether he develop's into franchise material is anyone's guess.

Hopefully Canada will provide the stimulus in helping him grow, because we are all painfully aware no one's been there in that capacity in a long time.

It seemed to me that in his first year and game 1 last year when he came in for Ben he did okay. But when he had all week to practice and think about it, he was not so good. This is where a good QB coach could help.

Ron, I believe CANADA will not only shine as the QB coach. I hope his whisper into Randy Fitchner's ear also makes a HUGE difference. I realize there was a LotSa injury last year but Randy did VERY little to help out the young QBs. BEN will cover up a lot of Randy inefficiencies but CANADA has gottA help.

Seems to me the Offensive game plans were just horrid. We were playing not to lose. And why not? Our Defense was playing awesome and we road them. The only time we opened up our Offense is when we fell behind late in games. Some on here thought the reason our game plan was so limited was because of Mason....but when Duck was inserted we continued to play the same exact game plan. Opposing Defenses knew what we were doing and loaded the boxes up. We still continued to run our same game plan...until we fell behind late in game that is. It was hard to watch our Offense last year. Was it Mason and Duck that were the issue? Possibly. Was coaching and limited play-calling the issue? Possibly. Both? Maybe.

I can't believe that people think he would be any help to the team at all. And that's only in reference to his qb skills. His attitude is arrogant , entitled and over the top. Please no, no, no.

I don't blame the guy if he wants to hold out for a starting job, that's fine. But here, umm, no, I don't see it.

I still believe MR can be the guy. injuries killed this team last year. Ben, Tuitt, juju, Conner, MR, nix, Snell.. Mason still had a winning record. What can he do with a healthy team?

Talent-wise I want him on my team. Everything else screams to stay away from him.

Play calling also didn't help. Just my opinion.

You mean, when the other team had a full week to practice against him and his popcorn arm? When they saw they didnt really have to defend anything beyond the 8 yard mark?

I'm not sure what you guys think a QB coach is going to do, its not like he hasnt played QB for nearly his entire life. Is Canada going to somehow make his arm stronger? Or somehow make him less of a statue in the pocket?

Y Or somehow make him less of a statue in the pocket?

hopefully, he will be able to get him to read NFL defenses faster so that he gets the ball out sooner and to make adjustments in pocket based on where pressure is most likely to come from as he ID's defenses and learns when to step up or slide left or slide right, etc. Pocket awareness and getting ball out would help the "statute" part a bit, but don't take that to mean he will become a mobile QB. he won't be that.

That said, I don't believe MR is the next great Steeler QB. He make take over after Ben, but he won't be the next great. Been sayin' it for years, we are in for a long road after BB retires so enjoy BB as long as we can. The time between TB and BB was long and frustrating for this fan.

Are you talking about Cam nEWTON.................... NOT here. His talent has dwindled a big bunch. 3-5year ago cam, maybe but NOT todays version of Cam. His wheels are gone so he now has to actually read defenses and make a pass...............
