Mason Rudolph Next in Line?

I would like to see what Matt Canada can do with Rudolph. I feel if he didn’t see anything salvageable in him the Steelers would’ve either drafted a QB or brought in a veteran already. (That can still happen). Hopefully Canada can have an impact on this kid.

Could also be that Canada thinks he sees something salvageable in Lynch and he's eyeing either one of those two (or both) as QB reclamation projects. Colbert has been very subtly mentioning Lynch in every QB discussion he has had during interviews. Kinda makes me think they are at least higher on him than the other spots he's landed. Gotta remember Paxton is a kid who was drafted late in the first round and has some pop to his arm. Denver gave up on him when he didn't immediately perform like an All-Pro.

No, networks compete for airing NFL games. It's why they change networks over time. NFC games used to be on NBC, before FOX made a better offer, and that solidified that network. Mostly the NFL's leverage is to present increases in viewership to higher expected payments for broadcasting the season. So if no one can go to games, and everyone is stuck at home, viewership will increase significantly. The NFL would use that leverage to get more money from the networks. You can't change a contract mid contract, but this is a network contract year, that's why the 2 sides agreed on the CBA so quickly, because it means a direct increase in revenue for all this season into next. Which in turn is supposed to have the salary cap go up significantly next year.

Good points on streaming, replays and PPVs, those are all increases in revenue as well!

I believe we are saying the same thing - that under the existing agreement, the network paid a fixed fee for the right to air games. NEtworks then turn around and generate revenue by selling advertising time slots. I was saying that i am not aware of any escalator payments from networks to the NFL if for some reason viewership goes up to certain levels. I see such performance based payouts in a lot of deals i work (and i am not one of them lawyer types)...it isn't unusual..i have just never heard of any such thing in the network's contracts with the NFL. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

As to it being a contract year, that has nothign to do with what the networks will pay this year. If the season goes off with no fans that doesn't change the terms of the existing agreements. In fact, even if viewership goes up, I am not sure the networks make anymore money as the ad slots are probably already sold. (and, they may take a hit if companies decide not to advertise due to current economic conditions). So, regardless of demand going up, that doesn't mean TV revenue will go up or payments to the NFL in turn go up. The leverage you mention may impact future T's & C's of the next deal, but not the current deal.

Unless....unless the NFL can claim force majaure and try to renegotiate their deal....but, again, i am not one of them slimy lawyer types so I would let a real expert like that slimy lawyer guy around here to chime in on.

So what you’re saying is-Denver didn’t use him properly....lol

Mason Rudolph seems to have a Neil O'Donnell sort of ceiling. I guess we'll see how much that concussion has really effected him. The lack of offensive identity doesn't help much either. What do we do well as an offense? What's our system? I can't answer any of those questions because we don't appear to have one. Any QB will struggle in that environment.

x1000. My sentiments exactly!

Playing at a 50% pay cut is still way more than most of these guys would earn in the real world working a 9-5 job!

More like 98% of them would make less than 50% of what their "on Field" pay is at currently.

Ya think, lol?

Schefter is a bum.

Slaine, Randy Fitchner needs to step up. Granted he had a lot of injuries to deal with but you have to bend your system to fit the Personel available. He (Fitchner) didn't do a lot of creative play calling to compensate. Defenses knew the plays based on Personel package and thus could pin ears back and Rush QB. I get the depth players not being able to execute as well as starters but OC has to find plays to compensate as well. Randy needs to adjust a little better as well as step up his game and improve coaching wise.

For me it all comes back to identity - what is our plan to beat teams? It feels like it's "hope to hell that Big Ben can throw enough TDs".

I hear what you are saying but that identity is born by the OC finding what our players can do best. I think YOPU are going to find we will be a lot better at running the ball this year and in so doing, the PASS will definately be improved. I think we will be known for the two headed monster as in both run & pass pending on what opposition is trying to take away. The Good O'l days of lining up and pounding the rock are long gone as today's NFL is pass happy so a combination of both is needed, hopefully in a somewhat balanced attach. Titans are an example of needing both as once their power run game failed they had no answer.

Understood. But are we a zone blocking run team that uses the run to set up the pass? Are we a power running team that drives the passing game off play action? Are we a short passing game team that tries misdirection and athletes with YAC ability to set up the occasional run?

I know that we have to be flexible with the option to run or pass but I have no idea what the plan is. I just wish that Fichtner came across as if he did as well. It's almost like he decided that he's taken all the plays he likes best from round the NFL and thrown them together regardless of fit, style or capability of the players that he has to run them.

Yes, you're right Hoot. I thought this year was a contract year, so the viewership numbers would have been more impactful in creating a higher deal. I know the CBA was important for negotiating a new TV contract, but it looks like it's locked up until 2020:

Cam is NOT going to be a STEELERS player this year, next year or forever land year. His game was in his legs which now he doesn't seem to posses that threat so he has to use what's between his ears and that's been likened to "Dust in the Wind".

NOTE: Nice write up Jonathan, informative opinion piece. Thank You

Cam Newton's camp has changed their tune.. he is willing to go to the right back up role........

I don't think Lynch will make the team.

The Broncos, who were dying for any kind of decent QB, cut him. He's just not very good.

I don't know much about Barrett. But if he can scoot, he has a shot at the No. 3 spot.

It just wouldn't smart for all three of their QBs to be statues.

Editoriall comment: Back to 0 points.....After 10-plus years on the board. Great.

No one wants a season with Mason. If We don't have a starting QB that's not on the team today other then a motivated Ben then we're looking at 8-8 At best. Cam Newton is in their sites right now. I do believe that would be a good move till we get a new Franchise QB even if as a back up.

The Steelers had a first round grade on the joker.

The Steelers had a first round grade on the joker.

And everybody (I mean everybody) has a 1st grade round on you.

We have a first grade, grade on your ability to grasp anything football. Much too early to put a stamp on Rudolph.

You said it here first, there's absolutely no way you can grade a QB on one year (and not a full year) of NFL experience.

Unemployment line?
Ba-dum tsss

Now seriously, you have to give him a real chance, he got his head concussed and then used as a wack-a-mole carnival game. The guy needs to get back mentally from all that crap

I don't understand the misplaced angst toward a QB that had a winning record, and positive TD/INT ratio in his first season of play, when he wasn't even prepared to be the starter all preseason, or taking many 1st team snaps. That's un ******* real people. QB's are supposed to throw more INTs than TDs their first year. They're supposed to lose more than win their first year. They don't go 13-0 like Ben did.

Mason is a 5-3 QB with 13TDs to 9INTs. If you don't believe he can improve from that, you've never watched a QB develop in this league before...

I said it last season and I'll say it again. The degree of stupidity demonstrated by the coaching staff and ownership in NOT bringing in any kind of QB coach when the franchise QB went down and you KNEW you had to go with ultimately 2 completely inexperienced guys is staggering.

How do they NOT do everything in their power to help those guys be as effective as possible?

We already know Tomlin doesn't teach. He motivates. Well, those guys needed ******* teachers.

Not having a vet in the mix in the first place contributed to the fail.
