By Jess Costello SteelerNation.com Although his time hasn’t come on the gridiron, quarterback Mason Rudolph doesn’t turn down the chance to get acquainted with his teammates and hone in on his skills. Rudolph goes way further than Pittsburgh to practice with his offense, too. Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey in California, running back Jaylen Samuels in […]

Great read and impressed. Like I said before, I LOVE these kind of stories VS the meMEme bullshit we've been force feed last couple years. I think Rudolf will over-take Dobbs and be the clear number 2. I'd have to wait for training camp and a pre-season or two games then try to trade Dobbs if all looks good. I reaLIZE A LOT CAN HAPPEN BETWEEN NOW AND PRESEASON SO let's get this thing going...... SEASON starts in _______ days

Even if Rudolph is vastly improved, is it realistic to assume that there is a team that would trade for Dobbs? What has Dobbs done to warrant giving up a draft pick or player?

True but in general one should always try to trade as an outright cut you get absolutely nothing. I'm n OT saying 100% sure Dobbs is gone but I'd explore options. Porn stash was kept way to long and out lived his trade value. If Rudolf is ready and Dobbs is odd man out, you might get lucky and get a 5th or 6th for him.

No reason to trade or cut Dobbs IMO if he loses out in camp. You had three last year rostered. You can roster three this year again regardless of results. Especially with a QB that is no spring chicken. You want a few options even if Ben is down for a few games. It might be different if one was a seasoned vet. But I think both should be considered wet behind the ears. Until they show that they are not ....

We kept Dobbs last year because teams were kicking the tires on him, but waiting for us to cut him to pick him up cheap. We decided to cut Landry, and no one kept him for long.

No way I cut Dobbs. Having both is a gift...

Agree here though my hopes were a bit dashed by (lack of) performance vs. Oakland last year. Hoping both make big strides this year.

I want to see if Rudolph improved his arm strength and velocity when throwing the football. The last pre-season I wasn't very impressed with his arm. And if he has better ball control.

Few remember Brady's arm greatly improved from his rookie year.

I'm not suggesting Rudolph will be close to Brady. I'll settle for a very good back up who can win 2-3 games if Ben is out.

I subscribe to Depot's stance of it will be a disappointment if Rudolph is not the #2 QB this season. They traded up in R3 for him and they graded him a R1, therefore he needs to be winning the backup spot by end of camp in year 2.

As I've said previously, my best hope is this turns out to be a Drew Bledsoe / Tom Brady scenario.
Sat for his first year and learned behind a vet.
Not wishing an injury to Ben anytime soon, but he's only played 16 games four times in fifteen years.
I'm hoping when he gets the chance, Rudolph makes it tough or creates that question in everyone's mind.

Agreed...

I think Landry Jones was better than Dobbs...

and you saw what we got for him.

Hells no I don’t cut or trade Dobbs. I hope and think Rudolph wins the backup job but I want Dobbs retained. You never know if we’re going to need them this year and he has a couple seasons of experience now.
