Tomlin isn't doing the best job right now. I'd take him over Marvin in a heartbeat though. I do think the Steelers are a safety and OLB short of being a decent defense again. Kinda hit me thinking at lunch today. When I saw this thread. So glad the Steelers are not the bungles

We'll take some guy that went combine nuts with a SPARC score or some dude we can't believe fell to us at OLB in the first that ends up being a rotational guy, whew problem solved!!!

At this point I'd rather employ the buckshot method of drafting and trade back from 1/32 to grab a 2nd and 3rd, then trade the 2nd for 2 3rds and draft 3 LBs in the 3rd and pray we get at least 1 serviceable player.

At this point I have no confidence in Tombert's ability to draft decent defensive players. If and when they draft someone decent, it is simply luck and nothing that they did on purpose. When they scout and analyze and do Wonderlic scores and combines and do EVERYTHING right to the best of their ability, they draft Jason Worilds, Shamarko Thomas, and Jarvis Jones.

What about the TE Green?? Did TOMBERT pay the 20M knowing he'd sit or did they sign him thinking he was good to go??? Either way it's dumassery and that's the kind of **** that has been happening for to long. Do I have confidence they will hit on EVERY draft / free agent, HELL NO, but if they could hit what would be considered AVERAGE would be acceptable. That would be a step up for them.

Tombert probably is AVERAGE but AVERAGE doesn't get you to the Super Bowl or regular playoff runs. AVERAGE gets you 7-9 to 9-7 which I think is Tomlin's natural state.
I think Ben can will a team farther than what the ****** coaching gives you. But I agree in the point I think the questionable drafts and free agents brought in overall is too much to overcome as a package deal. You are left with mediocrity barely making it in the playoffs and going home quickly. Or not making it at all.
So coaching withstanding what can they do to limit the failures?
Bring in something besides cut players, or players allowed to walk because they were ineffective or injured.
If they can manage one play making OLBer. I think it would be a step in the right direction. Then they could draft a ILBer in one. Perhaps Foster.
Then at FS (shrugs) look for some Mitchell competition in free agency. Not sure they would bring in two upgrades in the off-season. But it would be nice if the Giants GM could give them some tips.

They also draft Timmons, Woodley, Hayward, Tuitt, Shazier, Dupree, and this year 3 who show a lot of promise. And they did spend a few picks on offense that weren't bad during that period. Maybe you need to review your consideration of decent.
I agree there. Davis is playing a majority of the snaps now, and it looks like the safety play is pointing up. Mitchell needs to make plays. He hasn't done it until he got knocked out of the Colts game. He came back in and he was possessed. That's what I expect out of a FA pickup. Not 10yd cushions, never getting to the ball, and horrible miss-tackles. Hopefully Dupree helps the OLBs and Chickillo continues to improve.
The steelers aggressively target 3 positions of need in FA: TE, S, and OL (usually Center). They can pay at or near top dollar at these positions, because these positions are cheap to fill in FA. We're paying Green 5M a season, and Mitchell 5M. Not much in the grand scheme of contracts.
And Ron, I agree partially. Shark was a 4th rounder, so I'm not super upset at that pickup. He is a specimen, he just hasn't been able to show it on the field outside of special teams. Worlids at least could get 8 sacks a season. I'd kill for an OLB now to get close to that! Jarvis though does appear to be the bust along with Ziggy.
I've said several times in the past that they do a very good job of drafting offense. Now, you name a few good defensive players. Shazier and Dupree are too soon to say although Shazier seems to be injury-prone. Woodley was good but only for a short time then he got hurt a lot from being out of shape and ate himself out of the league. In the past I've named the good defensive players that Tombert has drafted. Timmons, Heyward, Tuitt, and Gay. Period. That's not much for ten years. Also remember that after five years there was not a single player from the 2008 and 2009 drafts left on the team. Five years is when players should be in their prime. I get that not every player sticks but that's two consecutive years of essentially wasted draft picks. That still makes 14 spots that the team has to fill. How do they fill them? Mostly 1) with players who weren't deemed good enough to draft and 2) players who weren't good enough to stick with other teams. That's a big reason WHY a couple years later they were 8-8 two years in a row.

To be fair the 2008 draft had 5 total decent players in it. I don't think a single player drafted in 2008 is a top 5 player at their position today. 2009 wasn't much better, netting Alex Mack and Clay Mathews as the only consistent pro bowlers in the class. I think the poorest position we've been drafting is CB. The amount of picks we've thrown at them, only net street FAs as starters. I like Burns, and would love to see Golson healthy, but that position has killed this defense.

I agree that it should be radioactive. He has done a decent job getting that team to the playoffs, but that's about it. With the types of toxic players that are on that team and seem to run the show is ridiculous. Just look at Burfict every week and the head coach enables him. I don't have much respect for him as a head coach.

The bengals have talent. Their problem is lack of discipline and that's on Lewis. He embraces Pacman and Burfict. That bleeds to the rest of the team that sees that playing selfishly is OK.

Last year, they used top picks on 2 OTs but that was just do they could avoid paying their current OTs. Same this year drafting CB in rd 1. They drafted Boyd at WR. He's a decent player but why not just keep Sanu and use that draft pick elsewhere?

I'm sure Marvin Lewis is a wore down coach. There was a time when he cared, and cared a lot. After dealing with his cheapskate boss, on so many levels, i'm sure he doesn't have the care that he use to. It shows in his players / coaches / interviews / etc.. Marvin Lewis is a good coach but after years and years of dealing with the whole aspect of the Cincinnati Bengals, I think he has worn down to NOT caring as much. It would get old having to change to or conform to the low cost team that they are. He can evaluate talent pretty well. It's the cheapness that gets him the player(s) he has. So as far as Marvin Lewis goes, I don't like what he has become and his thugery team is just that, thugs
