Marty was and always will be one of my all time favorite coaches. His teams were always fundamentally sound, well prepared, and usually hit harder than the other team.
People diminish his career and use his name as a punchline because he 'couldn't win the big one.' That's bullcrap. He never won the big one because he kept taking teams with average talent deep into the playoffs. In 1993 he took a team with Derrick Thomas, an over the hill future HOF QB way past his prime, an over the hill future RB way past his prime, and 50 other afterthoughts an RCH away from the SB. He beat teams with way more talent than his along the way including the Steelers. I can't think of any other coach that could have done better with the talent pool he had.
People throw the term 'Marty ball' around as an insult. People who watched his teams and know the game realize that Marty ball, while not particularly exciting to watch for the casual fan, was a proven method of success. And I'm glad I got the chance to see it.
All in all I'd have to say he's my second favorite coach of all time. And it's my firm belief, that if he hadn't lost that pissing contest with that no-talent fool of a GM in San Diego, (I can't remember his name right now and it isn't worth looking up,) the chargers would have won at least 1 SB with him as head coach. Because that was the team he coached that DID have talent.
Anyway, I'll get off my soap box now. Sorry to bug you all.
