Marty Schottenheimer

very very sad..........

Sucks to get old. Terrible disease. He seems to be handling it OK at this point. Many wouldn't be as personable when corrected.

I'd rather get cancer than that horrible ******* disease. To be robbed of you memories....just awful.

Blessings his way along with blessings to whom ever his care giver(S) are. That is not an easy task by no means and to watch a loved one erode away is VERY hard too..

Salute the nation

The last football coach to have made the Browns relevant.

A terrible disease. Feel bad for Marty.

Schottenheimer's teams were universally tough, and resilient. He made the candy-*** Chargers an excellent team that would punch you in the mouth.

After he left, that team - the same team - became softer than whipped margarine.

The worst disease you can get. My grandmother, who helped raise me, died of Alzheimer's.

From a football standpoint, I wonder if his case was caused by CTE. Still lucky to live a full life.

Blessings to you and your family, and thanks for mentoring our Coach Cowher!

I see it everyday at work. The disease effects different people in different ways. Some people are happy / giggly, some are combative, some are just plain mean, some speak totally without a filter, and others just go into like an anti - social shell. Just a terrible disease in general. You have 90 year old ladies yelling to go home to feed their babies or check in with their mother and you can't convince them or distract them easily.

Marty was and always will be one of my all time favorite coaches. His teams were always fundamentally sound, well prepared, and usually hit harder than the other team.

People diminish his career and use his name as a punchline because he 'couldn't win the big one.' That's bullcrap. He never won the big one because he kept taking teams with average talent deep into the playoffs. In 1993 he took a team with Derrick Thomas, an over the hill future HOF QB way past his prime, an over the hill future RB way past his prime, and 50 other afterthoughts an RCH away from the SB. He beat teams with way more talent than his along the way including the Steelers. I can't think of any other coach that could have done better with the talent pool he had.

People throw the term 'Marty ball' around as an insult. People who watched his teams and know the game realize that Marty ball, while not particularly exciting to watch for the casual fan, was a proven method of success. And I'm glad I got the chance to see it.

All in all I'd have to say he's my second favorite coach of all time. And it's my firm belief, that if he hadn't lost that pissing contest with that no-talent fool of a GM in San Diego, (I can't remember his name right now and it isn't worth looking up,) the chargers would have won at least 1 SB with him as head coach. Because that was the team he coached that DID have talent.

Anyway, I'll get off my soap box now. Sorry to bug you all.

Yeah it's been creeping in on my mom the last couple years. She's not forgetful but personality changes, gets locked in on things, and you can't always reason with her.

Just terrible. I hate that disease and the fact we can't find anything to help, at least, slow its progression.

So awful. Take care Marty. I always respected him as a coach.

It totally broke my heart when my grandfather could no longer remember me. I would have never thought it possible.

I always thought Marty got the shaft as a very good coach. They screwed him in San Diego but maybe his time was coming with Alzheimer's settling in. Shame to see this disease not have a cure yet.

My Mom got the early onset version. I took care of her in-house for 11 years (8 of those with the help of my amazing wife). We had to find a home for her recently after it got too crazy for me and my wife to handle. It's the worst **** ever created.
