Legendary NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, (77), peacefully passed away with family at his side on Monday, February 8, 2021 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Schottenheimer had been battling Alzheimer’s since 2014.

Damn, when I was a kid, he was the first thing I thought of when I thought of the Browns.

knew it was a matter of time when i saw they placed him in hospice. RIP, Marty.

He cultivated Cowher on that coaching tree. Great coach and better human being. Rest in peace Marty!

Get the lead, eat the clock! MARTYBALL!!!!

Not the best teams the Steelers fielded, not even close, but the 80s were my childhood.
Noll, Schottenheimer, Wyche, and Glanville - The AFC Central.
Those games were so fun to watch because the beat the ever loving sin out of each other.
Records didn't matter. Sometimes when you won the game, you "lost".
SO much animosity and natural rivalry amongst ALL of the teams.
It wasn't just Steelers/Browns. They all hated each other equally in that era.

*sigh* Memories.

R.I.P.

Condolences to his family and friends. The football world lost at class act today.

Loved his coaching and his speeches (at times).

Salute the nation

Damn, I hate to hear of this. Schotty was always one of my favorite coaches, a great man, a helluva leader. Even as a kid, hearing him address his teams would be enough for 9-year old me to wanna run through a brick wall for him. Breaks my heart he never had a chance to at least coach in the big game, let alone win the SB.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and friends.

Rest in peace, Coach Schottenheimer.

Impressive coaching career. I can't believe he never got another chance after San Diego let him go after a 14-2 season....

I would definitely put him in my top 10 coaches of all time........ mad respect....

RIP Marty......... you made the league and the world a better place........ Peace

Top 10 no doubt. He had an impact on the nfl

WPA lost a good one... first player coach Chuck Noll aquired when took over the Steelers but because of shottenheimer’s knees were just too worn out... believed to be one of the first payers to get Noll’s famous speech “time to get on with your life’s work” which Marty did brilliantly.. he was great coach he believed in defense and running the ball... “Marty ball” I would guess coaches like shottenheimer and don coyell will get into hall of fame someday both had big impact on the game. For me I was away from football out of county a lot building my career the Steelers had let Noll go just wasn’t that excited about cowher. I was in hotel flipping channels around and it was kc vs Pitt in playoffs and you could hear the helmets clacking all the way to London! Master vs student, student returning with masters old team... it’s was just great stuff the stuff of WPA football and why it’s special. Good bye coach thanks for the memory’s and if heaven has a league may you line up in the middle of the “steel curtain” once again this time on young legs!

If the Browns had any sense they should of hired him as their Director of Football Operations when they reconvened after their Pittsburgh imposed exile.

RIP Coach. You will be missed.

What I remember most about Schottenheimer was the fact that his teams were tough as nails. Good defense, strong running games, smacked you in the mouth. He was fired after his Chargers team went 14-2 but lost to the Patsies*** in a tough playoff game.

That same team goes 11-5 the next year under Norv Turner, then 8-8 under Turner, at which point it was as soft as microwaved butter. Schottenheimer's last year, the team ranked 4th in total offense, 1st in points scored, 10th in total defense, 7th in points allowed. Two years later, the team ranked 11th in total offense, 2nd in points scored and ... 25th in total defense, 15th in points allowed.

The difference was the coach. Yes, coaches matter that much.

Shottenheimer was from near Pitt, and Noll from Cleveland.

Funny how Cleve sent Pitt their best and Pitt sent Cleve their best.

Noll and the Steelers logo...the only two good things to ever come out of Cleveland.

RIP Marty.
