Mark Madden: Blame Steelers collapse on discipline, humility

You'd think the national media, especially a big name talking head, wouldn't care about a Steelers locker room pass, but you're probably right.

I think Tomlin's non losing season crap and sadly his race also give him cover in the media

Satisfy YOUR rule and keep the misguided racist of your back.............win win.

McCarthy gone in mid season but ARRON wanted him gone. Our QB has wanted our coach here, least ways in the past but as off season time passes and BEN conjures on the play out of this season.............things may change.

Beyond locker room visits. They wouldn't get any interviews. Their insider info would take a direct hit.

They are job scared no way would they do that.

AB talked to the media like what? oh game on!

Yeah now he is a easy target.

I have zero love for these reporters based on their agendas.

You nailed it. Help me ObiBEN Kenobi, you're my only hope

The Pittsburgh press is bought and paid for, they are turd polishers at best.

Notice how they refuse to publish any stories calling out the front office for the Bell fiasco that cost us the season or why no one is asking why Butler or any of the assistants haven't been fired yet.

Ithe Bell fiasco that cost us the season
Huh? I'll give you Me'Veon would have enhanced the offense but the "season" went to **** when losses to the AFCW dreggs Denver, Oakland and the inability to put away the Bolts at home with a lead? Or the Grimble fumble, egregious officiating mistakes and Defensive blunders?
C'mon man, even with the Bell dumpster fire this team was able to outplay the Saints in their house nearly upsetting the anointed Super Bowl favorites had it not been for the aforementioned bush league officiating.
Bell had no intention of playing for this team, forfeited a Kings ransom and jerked his teammates and Steelers fans off. Did ownership do everything to get #26 back on the field? Maybe but we'll see next season whose bank account Bell breaks then find out whether Art Le Deuce tried hard enough.

Madden's take in on par in the sense that the sloppiness and lack of attention to detail contributes to all of these close games.

The Steelers won their games by an average of 11.2 points with six of the wins being at 7 points or less (two by 3 points). Their losses were at 5.5 points per game, five by 7 points or less (3 by three points). Compare that to 2017 with wins by 9.8 ppg (eight wins by 7 or less and four by 3 or less) compared to 8.3 points in losses (three by 7 or less and two by 3 points). Last year the Steelers won almost all of their close games, but they sure do play a lot of close games. They had 11 within a touchdown in 2017 and another 11 this year. Does any team play more close games than the Steelers?

As far as some of the factors that we've discussed with losses:
Did Ben throw too much? He averaged 46.2 passes per game over the first 10 games (7-2-1) vs. 37 times per game over the final six (2-4).

How was the rushing? 109.9 yards per game in the wins vs. 49.5 in losses vs. 159 in the tie.

Penalties? 6.9 penalties per game in wins, 6.2 in losses, 12 in the tie.

Turnovers? In wins +/-0, -6 in losses, in ties -5.

What about Boswell? 7/9 (27/30 XPs) in wins, 6/10 (13/15 XPs) in losses, 0/1 (3/3 XPs) in the tie. Of course he missed a field goal in OT and one to send it to OT in Oakland. With a team that always plays with such small margin of error, having a clutch kicker is essential.

As I said previously..

Kickers in the NFL account for 3-4 wins...or losses a year..

Take the Ravens kicker off that team and they are a .500 football team....easy.

Yeah, Tucker is the best in the NFL. Every time they trot his ******* *** on the field, especially against us, he seems to drill it.

well, that too but you can't tell me having a healthy Bell on the field the last month when Conner was out wouldn't have mattered

and we could easily have had him at the end, if they just agreed not to tag him next year!!!!!!!!

was that too much to give up?

Stubborness and arrogance, not playing Ben, FAKE PUNTS, it all adds up

A very very sound point. Which tells me the Steelers need to shop for a new kicker. Through the draft or free agency.

Madden knows a lot about hockey and much less about football, but this was a great article.

In years when we have a decent kicker, he should be the MVP. Obviously.

7-2-1 to 9-6-1

7-2-1 to 9-6-1. That's an epic collapse. I read only three other teams started out that well and failed to make the playoffs and the two other teams suffered major injuries.

Tomlin is scheduled to speak to the press today at noon. I hope there is a reporter that drills down and ask why and doesn't take Tomlin's canned replies like we stand by the quality of our work. No, you steered a ship that had an epic collapse.

Please step down.

we are who are record says we are...…. we made the bed and now we are laying in it all off season long....

Are you saying "just be complacent" or what???? Making the bed and lying in it is one thing but to do NO changing of the bedding would be rediculous. Something needs to happen because doing nothing is NOT moving forward and if you are not moving forward then YOU are going backwards.........................

I believe the injuries were QB in both incidents. I think this has been discussed already coach. But a new thread on it sounds good.[emoji2] [emoji2]

Who were the QB's and were either on pace to throw for 5,000 as Ben did?

It didn't mention who the QBs were. But there is no denying it was one of the worst collapses in NFL history.

Never thought we'd beat the Pats and still miss the playoffs...

Defense gave up 18 points in the 4th to the Chargers, with our ILBs trying to cover their #1 WR.
Defense gave up 14 points in the 4th to the 2 win Raiders, while Ben stood and watched because our offense was in a "flow", and by flow I mean punt, int, punt.
In NO we try a fake punt on 4th and 5 with our slowest ball carrier(who really had to run 7-8 yards because how far behind the LOS he was). We then brought in a RB who has barely touched the ball all season, who has had fumbling issues in his career on a big short yardage play.
Then we have them at 3rd and 20, a short QB who is not mobile, who you know if given time will pick you apart, so common sense says, send one more than they can block and don't give him time to throw it 20 yards, nope we play cover 4 and drop 5 ******* yards deeper than the 1st down marker and give up 22 yards.

That all points to COACHING!!!!
