So lets say the rumors are right and Mariota falls to the bottom of the first round, does anyone think he is worth passing on a CB or LB for... bear in mind the rational for most of the teams passing on him, if they do, is reminiscent of Rodgers back in the day. He would be an insurance policy if Ben did decide to bolt or got hurt, and even if you stuck with Ben over the next few years he would be a good trading piece down the road, when this type of backup behind a franchise QB typically gets a high return based on potential.
Also remember that us passing on a guy like that puts him in the hands of another Playoff team like the Ravens or ugh.... Pats
He wouldn't be the sexy pick among Steeler fans, and he wont contribute right away, but he would be the BPA by a good margin at that pick, and frankly its far easier to find a CB or LB lower in the draft or as a UFA than a stud QB.
Personally I doubt he makes it past the Browns at 12, and almost certainly wont make it out of the 20's, but if he did fall to us, I absolutely take him if I even have a slight inclination that he would develop into a franchise type QB, because you never know when one will be available to you and because they have such a high value if people even think they are going to pan out. Its the one position that is almost impossible to win without a stud at. It may be the only scenario that I want the Steelers taking an offensive guy in the top 3 picks....
