He's just a hard nosed football player. We need guys like him on the team. I hope he makes it.

His intangibles are off the chart: work ethic, instincts, desire to hit, love of the game. His physical skills are limited; hope he can overcome them. Hard work can compensate for a lot, but not everything.

After seeing Matakevich on film, here's what I think.

Pro: He has off the charts football IQ and instincts. It's almost as if he overheard the other teams play call. He's decent at navigating through traffic. Although far from quick or fast, he's a pretty good zone coverage player.

Con: He's slow. Too slow to defend the outside edges vs the run or pass vs most NFL backs. His tackling to me is just passable. He needs to become stronger and wrap up better. If he misses Tackles in the NFL, he'll never make it.

Verdict. He might be the 4th best ILB on the team, and will need to be able to play special teams to make the cut. One thing that is going for him is Shazier tends to miss time. Decent 7th round pick.

The scouting reports I read said he has trouble getting lost in the bodies and if OLmen get to him, he is toast (but you could say that about most LBs I would think, but he is worse than most).

He is your classic "lunch pail" guy, ala Jerry O.I hope he sticks, because he could make the players around him give more effort.

A guy with similar physical skills went in the first round and he did not seem to have any of the intangibles but I think he was taller. That is if the stats I read were correct. The other guy was an outside linebacker named Jarvis.

This year his hope in making the final 53 is real if he lights it up on special teams. If they keep 5 inside, he has a decent chancei if he can beat out Fort or Johnson, assuming he has McCord beat.

46 Matakevich, Tyler LB 6-1 235 23 R Temple
57 McCord, Tyriq LB 6-3 241 22 R Miami (Fla.)
50 Shazier, Ryan LB 6-1 230 23 3 Ohio State
54 Fort, L.J. LB 6-0 232 26 2 Northern Iowa
94 Timmons, Lawrence LB 6-1 234 30 10 Florida State
98 Williams, Vince LB 6-1 233 26 4 Florida State
51 Johnson, Steven LB 6-1 237 28 5 Kansas

Regarding Matakevich, These " too small too slow over achievers " players that make it often jump out and play well in camp.

If Matakevich isn't making headlines, in July, I think he not going to make the team barring an injury

Interesting comment - One of these players was drafted in the first round. Which one?

Can I get a hint? Did player #2 ( 4.85 40 ) use deer antler spray?

Nope. How about this hint: Technically NFL.com reported him at 4.91 at his pro day but his second run was reported as fast as 4.85 so I gave him the benefit of the doubt.

Jarvis has to be the second option.

Jarvis has to be the second option.

Winner! Jarvis is less athletic than a player that most have decided that too slow and weak to make an NFL impact, worth a flier in the 7th, and unlikely to be more than a special teamer, make a good priority free agent, physically unimpressive, potentially a midlevel starter, backup, may catch on as a 3-4 will, etc.

And yes, the first option represents Matakevich's official combine numbers. Not that I think Matakevich is going to be some gem we found late - rather, it is my hate for Jarvis coming out again. We start a player at a premium position in the 3-4 that we drafted in the first round that is less athletic than Matakevich.
