Mack: Tomlin "Not Ready For Primetime"
Belichick, Brady and Pats Prepared... Steelers? Not So Much

CHRIS MACK
SEPTEMBER 09, 2019 - 9:03 AM

For the better part of the last two decades, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been going to New England and getting punished for not doing their homework. After a 33-3 drubbing at the hands of the Patriots on Sunday night in Foxboro, there's no shortage of blame to go around. Especially after the way the Steelers were bent over Tom Brady's knee and spanked for a sixth time in six meetings in Foxboro.

The play-calling - especially in short yardage situations - was infuriating. The quarterback was off target often and when he did get it to his #2 wide receiver, the ball was dropped faster than you could mutter "Good grief, (Donte) Moncrief." Kameron Kelly looked every bit the part of a defensive back who was in the Alliance of American Football five months ago. The two biggest additions to the defense's supposed speed improvement, Mark Barron and Devin Bush, looked old & slow and young & inexperienced, respectively.

Not to mention that even a near-perfect effort may not have been enough given the surgical precision Brady and the New England offense showed in exploiting Pittsburgh's deficiencies and mistakes.

“We weren’t ready for prime time,” said Head Coach Mike Tomlin.

Here's the problem: Tomlin was speaking as much about himself and his staff as he was the 45 men he put out on the field.

And that is at the crux of the matter for anyone concerned that this wasn't just one game against the defending champs, and that it's a sign of more to come.

Unfortunately, we should have seen it coming. Tomlin spent most of his weekly press conference last Tuesday harping on the concept that that Week One would be part of a continued evaluation of his team, and that they couldn't concern themselves with what New England may do.

Does someone want to be the bearer of bad news and tell him that the preseason ended back in August? I'm too astonished to form words that aren't of a vulgar, four-letter variety.

Then, rather than adjusting at any point, as Brady and Patriots' Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels did upon seeing their first six plays scratch out just 15 yards, Tomlin sat back and watched Brady pick apart the man coverage his defense was attempting to use underneath. Asked by NBC's Michele Tafoya at halftime when his team's lead had swollen to 20-0, New England Head Coach Bill Belichick said he expected Pittsburgh to make adjustments.

Tomlin, on the other hand, told Tafoya there was no reason to make any "dramatic schematic changes."

Again, perhaps it's better that someone else mention to Coach T that the games in September count, because my rage may lead to nothing but angry, red-faced noises.

With the better part of four months to prepare, Belichick and the Patriots fashioned a game plan for every eventuality, and therefore were able to quickly adjust when it was called for. Tomlin sat around and tried to figure out what he had but never bothered to figure out what may be thrown at him.

To go into a chess match with Belichick with a bag of checkers is one thing. But to go into a chess match with Belichick without acknowledging that it's a chess match is another thing altogether.

And it's downright inexcusable.

Other than showcasing his ineptitude as a HC in the NFL on national tee wee, Mike Tomlin will forever be associated with veterans like Pouncey, Ben, Foster, DeCastro whose careers are moving into the twilight. Instead of these players retiring as champions, theirs will always be a “what if” to reflect on.
I quite frankly do not understand the Rooney’s business model. Someone who is entrusted with the assets of the team and whose results are celebrated after mediocrity! Makes no sense!

As I stated in another thread, I don’t think the passion is quite as strong for Art as what it was for Art’s Father and Grandfather.
Art is s lawyer and a businessman above all else and views Tomless as a top tier coach and fortunate to have him.
Look around the NFL especially McCarthy in GB. Very similar records but wasn’t winning anything lately and he’s gone. Art follows the model of his dad with consistency with head coaches and believes that to be the best model.

Gameplan? We dont need no stinkin gameplan, men, we the Mighty Steelers, we just walk on the field and teams will give up

chestbump, high five

Another criticism of Tomlin: isn't motivation/ player relationships supposed to be a strength of his??

The patriots and Brown ***** slapped them across the face 24 hours ago with his signing. You'd think they'd come out with a mean streak, all the fight was gone after that reverse throwback pass, and I think we can all agree they went away after that. Tomlin looked resigned all night with no fire.

Its been said by many people: what exactly is Tomlin's contribution to this team?? We all know its not schemes and in game adjustments, now it doesn't seem its player motivation either

I don't believe Art2 is anything like his dad. He meddled with Cowher and ran him out of town.

He sticks with Tomlin because Tomlin was his hire and the W-L is justifiable from a 30'000 feet level.

It didn't really seem like they uhhhh......thought that whole Week 1 thing through very much. Looked more like "eh **** it, let's just see what happens here."

Seriously, if Shades just started doing the opposite of what his gut tells him to do, he'd get much better results. The only thing consistent about him is that he's persistently "going when he should be coming, and coming when he should be going."

If he wasn't so arrogant in his hubris, I'd feel sorry for him. He has no handle on the basics of his job as a HC.

Spot on. He's so ******* arrogant because there's been no accountability re: his job status. Like I mentioned before, I hope his players keep contradicting him as that will start to get the attention of many (many more questions than what this POS gets softballed much of the time).

As much as Tomlin sucks as a HC, AR2 sucks even worse as a majority owner.

If I was a minority owner, he would be getting **** every day from me until he was forced to can this chump, or step down.

AR2 is the TYPICAL 3rd generation head of the family business.
Generation 1 risks everything, devotes everything and puts their heart and soul into the new business.
Generation 2 works their *** off to expand the business.
Generation 3 pisses everything away because they have been handed everything through the hard work of generation 1 & 2.

This generation of Rooney “leadership” is a disgrace to the prior legacy. Since it is obvious he is more interested in the money, than the product, he needs to at a minimum, step down

Agree with most of the article but to say Bush looked old and slow is ridiculous. Dude looked pretty damn good - shedding blockers, covering guys even on the outside and making, what, 11 tackles. Bush is the real deal.

The truth. Art II, not impressed.

Sorry bush looked like **** and most of those tackles were after 12 yd runs. He’s Timmons v2 he was getting blown up inside

Sorry but I will have to disagree. He may have been the best player on D we had Monday night. I know that's not saying much but the entire D looked terrible. He was getting to the ball carriers and covering guys. No one else was. Did you ******* see Barron? Dude was specifically game planned to be in to cover White. Barron never even got close to where White was before the snap. White was wide open the entire first half and caught several first down passes. Bush was covering one of his guys on the outside a handful of times and did it well.

Oh, and Timmons v2? Most teams would take teams any day of the week in his prime and Bush is faster than he was.

If you re-read the article, he was saying Barron looked old and slow, and that Bush looked young and inexperienced. I can agree with that assessment.

Mark Barron and Devin Bush, looked old & slow and young & inexperienced, respectively.

Definitely missed that and that I can agree. Bush was possibly the only D player, other than maybe Watt that played decent.

Bush has all the skills to be special, we'll have to see how bad Tomlin and his crew waste all of that skill. Example: DON'T COVER WIDE RECEIVERS WITH ******* LINEBACKERS!!!!!

Tomlin when asked about changes at half made none , not ready for prime time, lack of execution , so who is he blaming
