Lupica: For overtime in NFL, just play another quarter (at least in the postseason)

I like the new rules for overtime in the playoffs. Was tired of seeing overtime games end on a few plays and a field goal. A sudden death ending on a TD is reasonable.

I suppose if you want to play an entire extra quarter I could live with it. Instead of that, maybe just play two seven and a half minute periods with a kickoff in the middle. It might be pretty exciting to watch. Each team would get to receive a kickoff that way.

But I actually liked the old system for the regular season. I would have kept the old rules as there's no reason to play really long regular season games.

I don't like the college system at all.

Good column. He made the point that, for the second year in a row, Packers were eliminated in OT without ever touching the ball.

He was on the CBS Morning News a while ago and joked, "Where do they have to be?" that they can't stick around and play another 45 minutes if it takes that long:

Lupica likes to interrupt people than hear himself talk. I'm old school. Sudden death whoever scores first. Even the coin toss matters! Remember the edge on those games?

But the NFL likes ratings, so I can see them liking this idea.

I like the current system because it takes away the value of the coin toss (it's basically played out that the coin toss winner and coin toss loser have each won just about half the time). The coin toss was huge under the old system as it seemed like all that was needed was a couple dinks and a pass interference penalty and the game was over.

People will always gripe about the system when a classic game seems to end too suddenly and a good QB like Rogers doesn't get a chance with the ball, but football's a team game so just stop the other team from scoring a TD or shut the hell up.
