Looking Into The Tight End Problem That’s Haunted The Steelers Defense

Whether they are rational or not, most people grow up with fears. Fears of monsters eventually transition into fears of illness, bankruptcy or growing old but very rarely do fears stay consistent throughout one’s life. Though there is one fear that has remained consistent in my life for as long as I can remember. It is not monsters, or ghosts. No, it is much worse, as the sights of an opposing tight end running up the seam against the Pittsburgh Steelers defense is a sight that has seemingly haunted myself and the team for years.

The origin of this fear started almost a decade ago, when a young tight end named Rob Gronkowski torched the Steelers for three touchdowns in his rookie season. Since then, the fear has only worsened as Gronkowski has not just rented space in the mind of the Steelers, he practically moved in. Making matters worse, Gronkowski also invited friends over to visit from time to time, inviting the likes of Travis Kelce and Jared Cook last season.

But perhaps like most fears, the fear of opposing tight ends torching the Steelers’ secondary is irrational. Looking back at how well the Steelers have defended opposing tight ends over the last five seasons could hopefully calm some of the anxiety.

that is a Inter esting I dea so Bush would cover the te man to man but Edmunds would be on the premier head honcho te like ertz or like Howard giants te you could cheat watt on th doo drop like a RTO which would confuse them te from the flip flap and poly waddle doodle all day.

(Just teasing wit ya F83)

1. TE's are generally covered by a LB or S. The Steelers for years have used their LB's mostly as pass rushers. 2. For about 10 years the Steelers have generally done a poor job of drafting LB's and S's (and CB's but that's another discussion).

3) Add in the stuborness to NOT change game plan durring the game so LBs don't cover WRs
4) Accept the fact that "D" & "D" drafting isn't CMVLT's stregnth

Edmunds, Bush, Barron sometimes Watt/Dupree. If those guys cannot cover a TE's I dont know who can.

I prefer to see Watt to rush the QB than to be in the coverage, but for others, yes it will take someone who is able to cover the TE.

Yes but his athleticism allows you to move him as a chess piece. If they had a brilliant DC there really is no limits to the exotic blitzes you could bring with this much big fast talent.

Obviously Miller has the edge overall but very similar athletically to one of the best pass rushers in the NFL if not the best.

My point is Watt is a beautiful pass rusher who should be used more in that capacity. A fringe superstar that can quickly put pressure on opposing QBs, In the process helping the secondary out, Hopefully he will get those increased opportunities.

I think Watt is a great overall player with DPOY potential. He should primarily rush the passer, but has great cover skills and plays the ball in the air well. I think if they would have got on more of the fumbles he created it could have at least been a playoff year.

I think if Bush, and Barron, and Nelson show to be coverage capable it will reduce the need to use him in coverage as much freeing him up to rush the passer a little more. Definitely agree he has DPoy capability. And they do need to do some fumble drills as the lacked in recoveries. Improving the overall defensive speed should help in that area,

If our defensive coordinator had a little more "up top" he would find and use these Guy's niche to our advantage. I know that you don't create a hole to fill a hole and that goes with any team sport. Watt will be used mostly properly as you do have to keep some element of surprise involved. I see the "D" coordinator and the "D" making big strides this year and I hope they keep out of each other's way along the way.

They have something spiffy in mind not worried.

If the two DLs do not work they are going to go with the 1 DL-jailbreak formation. It will be great if every team agrees not to run the ball and agrees to use their backup QB.

Two speedy ILbers brought in so that should help when they are matched up with the opposing best WRs.Instead of said receiver being open by two to three yards. They will only be open by a yard or a yard and a half.

After first down with anything 6 yards or longer I pull Vince and Barron is in. You have 4 linebackers that can rush the qb or drop. Yes, I would primarily rush Watt, but the uncertainty created by not knowing who is blitzing and still very fast guys who can run with TE and running backs, even slot receivers. DL in his prime would make this into a very special unit. Guarenteed.

Reportedly, Boobie has a tight end problem too...

In think boobie tried an "End Around" and never came back...............................................
