Says he got a redshirt year with a minor injury with him getting a year of development without the Steelers risking losing him. Is that allowed or did he just spill the beans?

He was injured so there is nothing that makes you roster them when healthy. Do some teams fabricate the extent of the reported injury?

I am sure…

It’s a move many teams use to protect players.

Now, do all teams actually have a player with a legitimate injury before employing this move? That is a whole other can of worms…but the move with an injured player is perfectly within the rules.

So when he is healthy he doesn't have to be rostered? Sounded like a minor soft tissue before end of camp.

You have two choices when putting a player on IR. Designated to return, or season ending. A team can designate up to 8 players to return. There is nothing that states an injury has to be of certain extent to be placed on IR. So they put him on IR without designating him.

Standard Modus Operandi for young players with an injury and no chance of making an impact that year. The Chief did the same thing to Rocky when his rehab from combat injury wasn’t happening as fast enough. Gave him an extra year to recover. The rest is history.
