Limas Sweed Suffering from Brain Disorders

I think some players are more susceptible to concussions than others. His had to be from high school and college since he didn't play in the NFL very long (article said 20 games).

Being prone to depression, plus concussions, plus dropping some balls in big games I can only image how much that could send you to a dark place. I wish him the best.

Football is a brutal sport.
Seems a lot of guys are coming out with brain disorders every offseason.

I think the NCAA makes a ton of money off these young athletes and yet won't pay them a dime. Bell had it right about slavery just he accused the wrong Venue. Limas should make it a class action suit similar to cigaret industries.

Football is a brutal sport, but the players should still be protected and cared for with concussions. Hope he is OK and can lead a good life.

Sorry, but almost every one of these athletes that the NCAA is making money off of is getting a full ride scholarship to schools with Tuition/Room/Board averaging almost 25k a year, that's 100k over 4 years of a free education that many other parents/students had to pay for, take out loans for...etc. They are far from a victim.

I'm the opposite, yeah the college makes money from the football/basketball games, but these kids are given a free ride and free education, and **** under the table. They are allowed to slide on grades, that a kid not in a sport would be allowed to get by on. That's on them if they don't want to take advantage of the opportunity they are given and actually get a degree, that's their own problem.

If they feel they should be compensated, then quit and go get a job, no one is forcing them to play a sport for a College. There's tons of kids that are very smart, that don't get the opportunity these athletes do.

True, I hope for the best for him and his family as well.

I am admittedly not an expert on slavery, but I am pretty sure that slaves were not allowed to say, "Naah, I want to walk away, not be a slave (i.e., not play the sport), go to another location (play somewhere else), etc."

I could be wrong though.

Um, is any NCAA and/or NFL player FORCED beyond their will to play football?
They're not allowed to be a doctor, or an electrician, or a customer service rep?
These players can ONLY play football?
GTFOH!

"Hey, kid. We're gonna pay for EVERYTHING while you play football at our university.
You can earn a degree in ANYTHING you'd like to, eat all the food you want to, stay in a private athlete dorm, get a school sponsored tutor assigned to you if you need and want it, and use of our world class facilities. If none of this is appealing to you, you can simply walk away with no penalty from us."

Yeah, I can see how that is JUST like slavery.
( Please note my sarcasm as I'm laying it on as thick as possible )

I mean. Fedderone is not wrong

You free ride guys are ****** joking. The practices, training, meetings and all other expectations of a big program completely limit most of these guys from getting a quality education. It is only a matter of time till the big lawsuits hit the NCAA. Can't believe it is taking this long. Free ride my ***.

They get an AVERAGE of $25k per year for their education and to play a sport...your argument might hold some weight if they were paying the same rates as a normal student AND playing a sport. If you can't find the time to get a quality education, it is because you CHOOSE not to put in the effort. I know plenty of former athletes that graduated in 3 years by taking summer classes while still at the university for practice/training. If you don't like the terms, feel free to be a non student athlete and pay your own way.

Lots of people do get something out of it. But if you put in that type of time and effort into something it sure as **** is not free. Nothing is free. Worth it, in your eyes for sure. In many eyes maybe. But it's still a billion upon billion dollar industry that often falls short for the player in terms of the long term good.

I'm sure the non athletes from poor families scraping by financially in college and who leave school with 150K in debt weep for these poor indentured servants known as star athletes. Give me a freaking break with this ****.

Really? Daughter was an All-American diver at an elite university, spent the entire school year practicing, going to meets, practicing some more, going to training, traveling to China for training, and on and on.

She graduated with honors from the best college in the world (as far as I am concerned), is now a doctor.

So tell us again how these poor athletes are not allowed to attend class ...

Free ride my ***.

Yes, pal, they get a free ride. I say this as a parent who had two kids play Division 1 sports, and who nonetheless had to pay about $300,000 total for my kids' educations.

Real money, pal. Wife and I paid it and believe me, if our kids could have received free tuition, room, board, books, etc. we would have taken it.

It is not the huge hits that are the only problem with brain injuries. The everyday hits you get on every play have a cumulative effect as the brains are jarred on all tackles, etc.

You pay from your money. You accumulate debt. OR you trade a skill you have, and your time, and your effort and sometimes your body. And 60 thousand people come watch you play at 60 bucks a pop. That's not free dude. Free is you walk up and they give.

You really believe a college diver is comparable to a college football player in terms of time spent training etc. College football players have strict structure on their time and are not even allowed to major in certain disciplines as it takes too much time away from their main purpose in college to play football and make money.

i can give you examples of college football players who are also Deans List students bit the vast majority of college players at big time football schools are either unable to do the required schoolwork or not capable of excelling academically

I recall hearing that Greg Lloyd graduated with a degree in electrical engineering, which is not an easy feat.

I don't know how you get the college's to pay everyone evenly. But if someone else wants to pay them for their autograph or sponsor their car, why not let them?

Way to run your pie hole about something you know nothing about. Swimmers and Divers usually have the same requirements as any other sport. The swimmers I knew in college were in some form of training 6-7 hours a day.
