Like Big Ben, Mason Rudolph not allowed to call quarterback sneaks
Posted by Michael David Smith on October 3, 2019, 6:02 PM EDT

After the Steelers were twice stopped on fourth-and-1 in their playoff loss to the Jaguars a year and a half ago, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger revealed that he wasn’t allowed to audible to a quarterback sneak, even when he could see he had the room to plunge up the middle for a yard.

Now the Steelers have a different quarterback and a different offensive coordinator, but the same policy: Don’t audible to a quarterback sneak.

Steelers offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner said today that he doesn’t like calling the quarterback sneak for Mason Rudolph.

“People that know me know that it’s not been one of my favorite things in the world to do,” Fichtner said, via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I wouldn’t mind in certain situations, but when it’s obvious situations — fourth-and-1, third-and-1 — it really isn’t something I’m interested in doing. I value our quarterback. There’s a lot of stuff going on in those piles. Just the truth be known, if we can’t hand it to one of our backs and we can’t block them, then we don’t deserve to win that down.”

Obviously, every team values its quarterback. But that doesn’t mean the quarterback sneak isn’t a play worth calling. Tom Brady has been effective at quarterback sneaks for two decades without getting hurt running one.

And as for Fichtner’s belief that the Steelers can just hand it off on fourth-and-1, well, they tried that on Thursday night and it didn’t work: In the first quarter on Monday night, the Steelers had a third-and-1 and handed off for no gain, then tried a handoff again on fourth-and-1 and again got stuffed for no gain. Fichtner was asked whether Rudolph, seeing how the defense was primed to stop a handoff, could have just kept the ball himself.

“No, he did not have that option at the time,” Fichtner said. “We actually just made some critical errors we shouldn’t have made. But he didn’t have that option, no.”

For his part, Rudolph said he told Fichtner he likes quarterback sneaks.

“I would love to do that. I tell him that every week. ‘If you want to call it, go ahead. I’ll get it for you and we’ll keep the chains moving.’ It’s just a matter of who he gives it to, what he calls, and we’re going to execute whatever decision he makes,” Rudolph said.

So Rudolph is up for a quarterback sneak. If Fichtner lets him.

Let everyone know we don't do QB sneaks. Next thing you know we'll go empty back field as not to confuse their defense.

As mentioned elsewhere, our run blocking is bad this year so 1) a QB sneak probably wouldn't work and 2) no point in getting Mason hurt and now we're down to the 3rd string QB with God-knows-who from the free agent pile backing him up.

Coaches not running QB sneaks is setting yourself up for failure. It's consistently one of the most successful plays you can run.

Dumbest coaching staff in the league and it all starts from the top.

Yeah.... its epidemic... remember when Arians refused to call slants or anything quick that wasn’t a buble screen because it wasn’t what works and cause the deep guys were always getting open... but our line sucked so bad ben didn’t get two seconds to throw.... even if thats how you feel you don’t announce that to the league and we do it over and over again trying to justify poor coaching decisions

Not only have you told the other 31 teams that you’ll NEVER call them, but you’re coaching scared.
A QB, or any player, on any play can get hurt. A QB sneak is no more dangerous than a QB taking a 7 step drop with a DL/LB about to take a free blindside shot.
GTFO!......No, seriously, Tomlin/Fichtner
GET THE F OUT!!!!!

In addition the defense can then cheat om our 3rd and 1s and 4th and 1s by not jamming the middle to protect against a QB sneak and allows then to have more players around for the famous slow developing sweeps the idiot brain trust loves to run on these situations.

Thank you. I'm baffled why this is so hard to understand.

2) no point in getting Mason hurt

You think advancing the ball a couple of feet (typically) is more dangerous than a seven step drop w/ a defensive player running full speed at him?

If they're that worried about quarterback injuries, maybe they shouldn't have had 37 year old Ben throwing the ball 675 times (the fourth most in NFL history) last year.

behind Pouncey and Decastro those 2 can really win at the L.O/S so run the sneak on like a 10% angle to the right see the gap and behind pounce and David push. MT sucks

Tomlin is a complete moron on this issue. Nothing more can be said. QB sneaks work and the QB very, very, very rarely gets hurt. Tomlin IS living in his fears, plain and simple.

100% this right here. it's mind-numbing how pathetic this coaching staff is...i can't even wrap my head around it.

Because the HCMT is football dumb and too cocky and arrogant. Thinks he knows best! This is what you get with him so don’t even try to apply football logic here. It don’t work!

The article was about our OC not like qb sneaks

I do not even know what to say anymore pertaining to the coaching.

It's not just the refusal to simply have the QB lunge forward a couple feet in short yardage situations.

It's an entire array of questionable play calling/scheme on offense that has transcended three different OCs now.

Tomlin is the constant.

I realize you're in singular context but felt compelled to make a grammar mistake.......... but a true statement.
