Le’Veon Bell’s threat to sit out season written off as April Fools' Day joke

I don't disagree, but his injuries played atleast as much of a role in the tag. We didn't use much cap space for free agency, so offer him a fair deal, that works for both sides, and if he doesn't like it, he can sit out all he wants.

I don't think he's finished a season yet that he wasn't on IR.

ONE more thing, what ever happened to TEAM sport???? I totally understand the $$$money now aspect but it is all about the money with every player now. Part of it is the NFL it self as they have made everything about the almighty dollar, thus it has rubbed off onto the players. I don't fault BELL for wanting the absolutely most $$coin as possible but what about being a man with character?? Why go through the this me me me me ****??? Why not go in and sit down with the Rooney's and state your intentions and NOT make every ******* aspect of your life and (crappy) intentions known to the world? Integrety has left with parenting.......TRUE parenting. Not the "best friend" parenting or the broken parent parenting. The disciplined and accountable parenting is a lost art in today's society, let's hope things are taken care of with respect and not so much me me me.

The current social culture has trickled into the nfl. I always held up hope that the nfl would not turn the way of the nba, but that is looking to be what the nfl has become. No sport is pure, but the nhl and non power 5 conference schools have been fun to follow when it comes to viewership. Luckily the Steelers still have some players who you feel genuinely play for the love of the game. So always a fan.

They never sit out the whole year. They lose the accrued season and his rights go right back to the Steelers. What they really "threaten" is to sit out until week 10. They still get decent money for the last 6 games ($4.5 million for Bell's case). Save their body and get into free agency next year unless the Steelers tag him again (which would be above $14 million).

Del is right. Threatening to hold out for a season now, is a freaking joke. They aren't going to do it, because the Franchise Tag is a lot of money now. To play a season for $12M is definitely a fair market value for a season at the high end of being fair.

The last person to hold out for a season was Sean Gilbert. He held out from the Redskins for an entire season instead of making 3M with the tag. That tag value was a joke, because the following year he was retagged at $2.8M filed for arbitration to avoid a second tag, and the Redskins traded him to Carolina where he signed a, get ready for this, $46.5M contract! Now the value was there in 97 and it was really smart to hold out from being paid $3M to end up getting over 15x the value of that year.

That was the start of the open free agency pricing the market. Now $12M is a great amount of money to get for a season, since contracts aren't guaranteed, so that amount would be about the first year amount of the contract anyway (signing bonus aside since they can be paid back in certain situations as well). If a RB scoffs at 12M, they are an idiot, and the Steelers would gladly have him sit and trade him to get the 2 1sts value, then give in to a terrorist at that point.

Bell has no leverage in this negotiation. Especially since he has yet to play a full season in the NFL (2 seasons being because of his own idiocy with banned substances).

Bell confirms threat to sit out season was April Fools' gag

Don't worry, Pittsburgh Steelers fans, Le'Veon Bell apparently has no intention of sitting out next season due to the franchise tag.

Bell initially said he wouldn't suit up for the whole season if no long-term deal was agreed upon, but because he did so on April Fools' Day, few took the threat seriously.

The running back doubled down on the gag, however, claiming he wasn't joking. But Bell didn't torture Steelers country for long, revealing that it was a prank all along.
Good one, Le'Veon.

It's 364 days until the next April Fools' Day, people. Let's appreciate it.

Two word... NOT FUNNY!

And here I thought his album was the joke![emoji23][emoji28]

I agree with MTC that the NHL is the only pro sports league who seems to have the team sport and organization first mentality still in place. There are still Prima-Donna's, but not to the level of the NBA or NFL.

But the NHL player holds all the cards with a virtually guaranteed contract. There are guys down in the minors making 6 or 7 million dollars riding the bus. They could cut him but they're going to be paying anyways.

Agreed. There are prima-donnas. Just seems unaccepted in the hockey culture. But they do exist in hockey too. The nfl, not too long ago seemed to be against that. Sure you had the Chad Johnsons and Terrell Owens of the league. But they still balled out to win. Now guys ball out for the contract. And really it stems to money. When the league is making billions, it's easy for teams to throw that big contract and the player tends to relax in play. Can't blame them I guess.

i know it was a joke, but I still know there are stars on team that aren't team players, me first guys. not a fan of that. but I will ALWAYS be a STEELER fan.

AGREE with you on always being a STEELERS fan but Remeber part of that is of the old school. Been a fan for a LONG time and Remeber when a owner & player's word was worth something. The NFL has changed a lot, some for the good but also SOME for the WORSE. Will it ever come back to what the game was truely meant to be, NO. The rules of NOT just on the field of play but also the off-field rules as well. They've change drastically and society / rog / NFL have all contributed to low ball, back stabbing, me me me me type characters. I'm sure LeVeon and Antonio are both good kids deep down but the "grunt" of the NFL doesn't allow that to come out. They have to fight for the $$$$$$ as that's all it has become about. The "love" of the game is no longer there and doubt it will ever return. There are exceptions to everything but as a whole, what I say is true.

Yep, I can't remember if it was Bettis that said he played on more talented Steelers teams, but never on better team than the 05 team. Team first still plays a big part in it.
