Le'Veon Bell's Thoughts On Kiper and McShay

My argument wasn't whether Russell was a worthy draft choice, my argument was that Kiper is just a talking head and what really matters is what the teams think of these players. The Raiders apparently thought Russell had enough talent for their #1 pick. Kiper's love for Russell had no impact on that decision or any other team's decisions for drafting IMO. Bell got picked where he did based on NFL scout evaluations and not because of Todd McShay or Mel Kiper's pre-draft ranking/evaluations.

^^^^ This. I highly doubt any NFL team is sitting in their war room on draft day afraid to make a pick because Kiper and/or McShay wouldn't approve.

Wow, when I posted this. I thought the debate would be about whether Bell was on point with his assessment of Kiper and McShay and their "abilities" to evaluate talent. I didn't expect it to evolve into a debate on player's free speech rights, their use of proper grammar and whether the fact that fans buy concessions means they are the employers of the players (about that, I'd say that the TV deals pay more of the players' salaries than concessions, attendance, etc. ever will).

I may or may not agree with what any player has to say on Twitter. Some of them say some absolutely outlandish ****. However, this is 'Merica damn it, and they have a Constitutional right to say those things. That doesn't mean that they are above reproach. Of course they can (and will) be criticized. Anyway, I don't see much harm in what Bell had to say. And I don't see any connection between remaining silent and getting a lesser suspension. Hell, Hines Ward would shoot his mouth off and folks applauded him. When Faneca shot his mouth off about not wanting to play with a rookie, I don't seem to recall many people saying "Alan, shut up and play. Your statements to the media are not the actions of a good teammate."

In a prior post you state, "Social media is here to stay, and players are using it to get closer to the fans and to let their opinions be heard".
We all know that NFL players are known for the literary value of their tweets. Here are a few Le'Veon Bell beauties:

Thank goodness players take to twitter to use bad grammar, unreadable short hand, and occasional profanities as a way to get closer to the fans.

I think you're just a little out of touch. Follow any athlete on twitter and comment on their grammar. It's the way kids speak these days. Doesn't change the fact that this isn't a big deal.

And what Bell is saying is "why does this guy get so much credit when he is consistently wrong? why is he considered an expert?" He isn't claiming that he has some magical say in where people get drafted, he's questioning why ANYONE listens to him at all, fans, media, draft prospects.

In all fairness, you are claiming that others' opinions about Bell are somehow invalid/stupid/wrong. So it's kind of the same thing.

I happen to agree with the premise that people should spend less time railing against others, especially publicly, but I certainly have been guilty of the same. Maybe it is a product of getting older, but I do wish that Bell would find a way to express his opinion that was less inflammatory/attacking . . . maybe something more concrete about the fairness of the prospect judgments presented by the media, including Kiper, McShay, etc. I definitely liked the tweet where he was encouraging prospects to not worry about the media analysis and trust that the coaches and scouts were doing their real homework.

I'm simply tired of the way people think players should act. Like as soon as they become Pittsburgh Steelers they have to sacrifice every little luxury, approach a GAME that they love to play and get paid to play like it's a 9-5 drone job. KIDs are going to have fun, enjoy life, and live the dream while they have the chance. The fact that people are upset that he took to twitter to say the exact same things people on this board say about Kiper is just hilarious.

Players that I remember that Mel Kiper said the following QBs would be great in the NFL:
Joey Harrington - compared him to Brett Farve.
Jim Druckenmiller - best player in the draft.
Ryan Leaf - because of his........wait for it.......attitude.
Jamarcus Russell - compared him to John Elway.
Jimmy Claussen - he guaranteed he would be a success in the league.
Akili Smith - destined to be one of the greats.
Andre Ware.......seriously, do I need to go on?

I think it was McShay that really loved Gabbert. That shocked me. You don't need to be a scout to see that Gabbert was beyond terrible if there was any pressure even remotely near him.

My opinion is it was an idiotic move to rant on his tweet feed about it. No good could come from it. Doesnt make him look too professional in my opinion. I know that social media is here to stay. I wish personally he just wouldn't post negative stuff like he did. If he chooses to do so I won't lose any sleep over it. I was just giving my opinion on the matter. And I support your right to voice your opinion on the internet as much as I support Bell's right to do the same. I'd imagine if asked he would say something similar about his opinions regarding Kiper and McShay. i.e. "I was just giving my opinion on the matter. Does it make my opinion the right opinion? I don't know. I do know though it is my opinion."

My own opinion is that it made for an interesting read and a raw glimpse into Bell's thoughts on media draft gurus. That's about it. I've found the responses to his tweets on here to be as interesting as the tweets themselves; if not more so.

Edit: I also found it amusing that Bell let us know that he at least hits up the Steelers "fan" sites when he included a screen capture of a BTSC article.

That's how I wastaking it, but wanted to make sure...I just understand why you feel the need to make fun of how people feel about things. I just dont care for it. Maybe it's because we just haven't been that dominating as of late. I remember when Hines and the Bus use to do their thing. It really didn't bother me. I don't know why. We were good. Lately I see our players celebrating a first down and we are losing by 14 pts...I don't get it. Maybe it's me, but I don't feel the need to make fun of people who like it or don't mind seeing. Hell. Whenever I read something like Bell wrote I think to myself this kid attended college? His opinions on the media guys are his and many of us would also agree the media is getting to be less about reporting what was researched and more about spin or an agenda. It is a really poor reflection on the college he attended as an institution of education when their graduates or former students speak publicly like Emmid Smiph or type comments like Bell just did.

For a comparison between the communications dropped on us by Bell go back and listen to any of Dermonti Dawson's comments when he was being interviewed, or Joe Greene or the Late L.C. Greenwood. These guys at least spoke english and were able to render their comments in an intelligent way. I imagine they were capable of articulate writing as well.

I see no problem with him expressing his dislike of a reporter, I just wish he was able to sound like he came from college.
