As the NFL Draft approaches, expect to see more and more of Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay on ESPN, ranking and breaking down the top prospects. While they are probably the two most recognizable draft experts in the media, they are by no means perfect. Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell, who has emerged as one of the best rushers in the NFL, did not draw rave reviews from Kiper, and is currently teeing off on the analysts on Twitter.

Tell us how you really feel Mr. Bell.

You are starting the season on a 2 games suspension. Can the Twitter rants.

yeah, we want players without opinions, mindless robots who never have fun, don't stay out past 9pm, and of course NEVER EVER celebrate a good play!!

Way better than Spinthenfall's output.

I agree...What is wrong with a littlw weed while driving down the road...Speak what is on your mind Bell....Let us all hear it. Peace.

clearly smoking weed and calling out Kiper are on the same level... sometimes you people are an absolute joke.

Yep, but when you do something STUPID and the microscope is on you why draw attention to yourself? And my opinion on this board is as much of a joke as yours is.

Microscope? There's hardly a whimper out there right now over Bell, unless you're Pittsburgh media. Bell is paying the price for his mistake, doesn't mean he has to become a mindless drone from now on. He's not questioning 911, he isn't hitting women, he isn't hiding a white suit, he's calling out one of the biggest draft frauds the world has ever seen.

Bell isn't even a top 5 story for RB's right now, let alone the NFL. McCoy, Peterson, Rice, Lynch, and about 20 or so young men about to be drafted are all way ahead of Bell's story.

Sue me. I prefer when players keep their traps shut in the media. Especially ones who are currently serving a league suspension.

He is now a top 5 story....maybe? Kiper has been know to be an idiot. Bell did not have to call him out. Again this is my opinion. Why draw any attention to yourself when you are looking at a 2 game suspension(maybe 4). i really don't know how keeping your mouth shut about this is being a drone. How about it is being an adult.

He's a 23 year old kid. It's 2015 where even things said behind closed doors find their way out. This really is a non-story. You think a twitter rant about two guys that have no affiliation with the NFL (other than flapping their jaws on ESPN) is somehow going to effect his suspension from a DUI?

We know that Blount was a bad influence on Bell, we know that Bell kept his nose clean the rest of the year, has taken all the right steps to move past his mistake. We know from teammates and coaches that he's a hard worker, puts in the time and effort to be a better player. But some small website that barely anyone reads picks up a small twitter rant about Bells opinion is now somehow so outlandish, and unacceptable for someone facing a two game suspension from something COMPLETELY unrelated...

It makes absolutely no sense to me. The expectations fans have for this team and it's players, SO unrealistic.

Player X is drafted by the Vikings, goes on a twitter rant on his opinion - good for him, he spoke his mind.
Player Y is drafted by the Steelers, goes on a twitter rant on his opinion - doesn't he know he's supposed to be a fully matured adult, he's got a reputation to uphold.

I think it's pretty obvious that none of you follow any of our players on Twitter

Players that I remember that Mel Kiper said the following QBs would be great in the NFL:
Joey Harrington - compared him to Brett Farve.
Jim Druckenmiller - best player in the draft.
Ryan Leaf - because of his........wait for it.......attitude.
Jamarcus Russell - compared him to John Elway.
Jimmy Claussen - he guaranteed he would be a success in the league.
Akili Smith - destined to be one of the greats.
Andre Ware.......seriously, do I need to go on?

Here is the thing, these Bafoon breath **** speaking analyst, can say anything they want, they are NEVER held accountable. Simple, straight, no reprecussions to face. SPEAKETH loud and off, get the camera on themselves, self proclaim greatness, WhoaaaLa, you have Mel kipper jr. As for LeVeon, he is a free man, he can speak what he wants, when he wants. Anybody here thin king they can shiut him up, need to rethink. FREEDOM of speach, AMERICAN freedoms are here. Agree or disagree, doesn't matter, he is what he is. NOW TAKE THE DANG BALL, PROCEED DOWN FIELD, shiut the **** up. (LOL)

Salute the nation

Bell should continue to let his play prove his detractors wrong rather than using social media to toot his own horn. Some things need not be said, unless of course you're begging for applause.
Thank God we have Insaniti monitoring our players twitter accounts, I would hate to see one of them put their foot in their mouth. Oh wait, that never happens.
Shut up and play!

I'm not monitoring anything, way to misread the point. This is a non story being made into something it's not. This whole "shut up and play" attitude that fans want these players to have is ridiculous. This isn't the 60's and 70's anymore. Social media is here to stay, and players are using it to get closer to the fans and to let their opinions be heard.

Maybe some of these "shut up and play" fans should take their own advice and "shut up and cheer". But somehow you're allowed to critique their every move, blast them for speaking their mind, like they owe you something. Welcome to 2015 gramps.

Look at all the 1st round picks on that list and a few #1 picks. Kiper can say what he wants but teams still have to do their own evaluations of these players and actually draft them. The Bengals clearly agreed with Kiper on Akili, the Chargers clearly agreed with Kiper on Leaf and so on. It's not like Kiper is the GM for every NFL team pulling the trigger. Hindsight is 20/20. No one could have predicted Leaf or Russell's collapse from humanity. Hell Leaf was being debated as a #1 overall pick with Peyton Manning...that's how good everyone thought Leaf was.

I think we can all agree the draft is a crapshoot, just look at our drafts the last decade.

Leaf had the talent, but Russell? Seriously trying to make an argument for Russell??

As fans, we are allowed to critique their moves, we pay their salaries. I don't expect them to act like immature imbeciles on twitter so that you can be amused.

You don't pay for ****. The owners pay their salaries, they are their boss. The fans are not. The owners earn their money from concessions, tickets, merchandise, etc. That doesn't mean that you pay their salaries and somehow have a say in what they can and can't do.

Somehow you being amused by the "shut up and play" attitude trumps my amusement by Bell speaking his mind on one of the most overrated ESPN personalities? Now this is getting good. I pay for your medical coverage and social security, so I'm going to tell you when you can and can't go to the Dr. Deal?

And I guess the fans have no hand in concessions, tickets, merchandise, etc. You must have a degree from Wharton.

In a prior post you state, "Social media is here to stay, and players are using it to get closer to the fans and to let their opinions be heard".
We all know that NFL players are known for the literary value of their tweets. Here are a few Le'Veon Bell beauties:

"dude be wrong"
"he didn't watch no legitimate film on me"
"no he not"

Thank goodness players take to twitter to use bad grammar, unreadable short hand, and occasional profanities as a way to get closer to the fans.
Fat drunk and stupid is no way to go through life Insaniti.

Wow, when I posted this. I thought the debate would be about whether Bell was on point with his assessment of Kiper and McShay and their "abilities" to evaluate talent. I didn't expect it to evolve into a debate on player's free speech rights, their use of proper grammar and whether the fact that fans buy concessions means they are the employers of the players (about that, I'd say that the TV deals pay more of the players' salaries than concessions, attendance, etc. ever will).

I may or may not agree with what any player has to say on Twitter. Some of them say some absolutely outlandish ****. However, this is 'Merica damn it, and they have a Constitutional right to say those things. That doesn't mean that they are above reproach. Of course they can (and will) be criticized. Anyway, I don't see much harm in what Bell had to say. And I don't see any connection between remaining silent and getting a lesser suspension. Hell, Hines Ward would shoot his mouth off and folks applauded him. When Faneca shot his mouth off about not wanting to play with a rookie, I don't seem to recall many people saying "Alan, shut up and play. Your statements to the media are not the actions of a good teammate."

I agree. This speaks to Bell's maturity level. Twitter seldom benefits active athletes.

In all fairness, you are claiming that others' opinions about Bell are somehow invalid/stupid/wrong. So it's kind of the same thing.

I happen to agree with the premise that people should spend less time railing against others, especially publicly, but I certainly have been guilty of the same. Maybe it is a product of getting older, but I do wish that Bell would find a way to express his opinion that was less inflammatory/attacking . . . maybe something more concrete about the fairness of the prospect judgments presented by the media, including Kiper, McShay, etc. I definitely liked the tweet where he was encouraging prospects to not worry about the media analysis and trust that the coaches and scouts were doing their real homework.

Leaf had the talent, but Russell? Seriously trying to make an argument for Russell??

My argument wasn't whether Russell was a worthy draft choice, my argument was that Kiper is just a talking head and what really matters is what the teams think of these players. The Raiders apparently thought Russell had enough talent for their #1 pick. Kiper's love for Russell had no impact on that decision or any other team's decisions for drafting IMO. Bell got picked where he did based on NFL scout evaluations and not because of Todd McShay or Mel Kiper's pre-draft ranking/evaluations.
