Le’Veon Bell: Greedy or Misunderstood?

NEWS Steelers Rookie RB Jaylen Samuels: ‘They’re Not Going To Pigeonhole Me To Just Doing One Thing’
ByDave BryanPosted on June 9, 2018 at 11:34 am 7 Comments
With the team’s 2018 OTA practices now behind them it appears as though the Pittsburgh Steelers plan on using their second of two fifth-round draft picks this year, running back Jaylen Samuels, exactly like he was used during his four years at North Carolina State and that means lining him up at various spots on the field.

“That’s why they drafted me,” Samuels said Thursday at the conclusion of the Steelers final OTA practice of 2018, according to 93.7 The Fan. “When they drafted me, they told me that they was going to be doing a lot of different things with me like N.C. State was. They’re not going to pigeonhole me to just doing one thing like running the ball. So, that’s what I’m doing now. They got me playing in the slot, playing the F position, being able to move around, motion around, catch passes out of the backfield, out of the slot. So, I’m just going to keep working at it, learning the playbook as I go and just get more comfortable.”

With starting running back Le’Veon Bell once again not attending OTA practices this year he’s not able to help teach the younger running backs on the roster. Even so, Samuels said Thursday he’s been able to pick the brains of the other experienced running backs on the team’s roster while also receiving instruction from his position coach.

“It’s going good,” Samuels said when asked to gauge how his learning process has gone thus far. “You know, it’s a lot of stuff that’s being thrown at me now that I’m learning the running back and the F position, which is the slot. So, I’m just trying to get in my playbook everyday or learn from Coach [James] Saxon. Everyday come out here and learn from behind these vets like Rosie [Nix] James [Conner] and Fitz [Fitzgerald Toussaint] and [Stevan] Ridley. So, just trying to learn everyday and get better.”

Because he’s learning to be the Steelers jack of all trades, positionally speaking, Samuels, who rushed for 1,107 yards on 182 carries during his college career, in addition to registering another 1,851 yards via 201 receptions, was asked how he goes about dividing up his day in regard to learning so many positions.

“Well, I just try to learn from it as concepts,” Samuels said. “If I learn it as concepts, then I learn what everybody else is doing and it makes it easier for my job. That’s kinda what I did in college because they had me playing all over the field. So, I learned it as a concept and not as one position.”

Is there an advantage to learning it that way? Samuels believes so.

“Yeah, I think it is just to show the versatility,” Samuels said. “Whenever somebody goes down and they need me out there, I can hop in and play as fast as the person before me was. So, just show that versatility, being able to catch and run the ball as well.”

Earlier last week Samuels admitted that pass blocking is definitely something he’ll need to improve on the most at the NFL level because he wasn’t asked to do much of that during his four years at North Carolina State. Unfortunately for Samuels, however, he’s going to have to wait until training camp to show that pass protection is an area of his game that can be trusted in as hitting and heavy contact isn’t allowed during OTA practices. Samuels let it be known on Thursday that he’s looking forward to proving at Latrobe that he can handle the pass protection element of his position.

“I feel like I’m a very physical guy,” Samuels said. “We haven’t been able to show that these last couple of weeks without pads, but once training camp comes and we get to pass on, then I can be able to show the coaches the physicality with the pass blocking, the running.”

In addition to Samuels needing to show his physicality as a pass protector during training camp, he’ll likely need to show it on special teams as well while at Latrobe and during the team’s four preseason games. On the surface, Samuels appears to be on track to be, at worst, the Steelers No. 3 running back this year and his position flexibility could result in Bell ultimately not having to play as many snaps as he did in 2017. If you remember former Steelers running back Mewelde Moore, who played four seasons in Pittsburgh from 2008-2011, it sounds like Samuels is being groomed to play a role similar to what he did.

Well it looks like pass blocking will be something he has to improve on to see some time on the field. Hopefully it goes well for him.

Not if he is in the slot.

Mitchell slowly went down hill with those habitual injuries. Haden was a solid find though. And a quick snag when available.

And let's be honest, the picture looked a lot more brighter before Shazier went down with a career ending happening.

Odd that two ILbers went down at once too.

If anything injuries have hurt just as much if not more.

Mitchell was pretty good until the rules changed around him, then he became a penalty machine, then when he was able to cut down on the penalties last year he wasn't as good any more. Wasn't able to adjust his game and still be effective the way Deebo did.

Ike and Deebo took awhile to develop, we might see the same from some of the recent Defensive draft picks.

Le’Veon Bell has thrown out a lot of numbers in long-term contract talks with the Steelers that have dragged for more than a year. He’s rapped about wanting $15 million, and other times let his demands swell to $17 million.

Now, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports the running back may be eyeing something a little more reasonable.

Bell told ESPN he won't accept an extension worth less than $14.5 million per year, his franchise tag number for 2018. If the sides fail to reach a deal, Bell will play out a one-year deal at that number.

The Steelers placed the franchise tag on Bell for a second consecutive year back in March and have until July 16 to work out a long-term deal before both sides are bound to a one-year tender worth $14.544 million for 2018. Last year, Bell reportedly turned down a deal worth more that $12 million per season before playing under a $12.12 franchise tag for 2017.

If $12 million is the baseline for talks, it would appear there’s still a fair amount of room between the two sides. Bell’s actions reflect that, as he’s missed all of the team’s offseason workouts so far.

Randy Fichtner is the Steelers' new lightning rod. He's OK with it.
That said, this new number would appear to represent some movement on Bell’s part, at least in comparison to past public comments. Whether that will add up to a deal before the deadline remains to be seen, but it’s certainly a noteworthy change in directions for demands that have seemingly only gone up to this point.

meh Bell being Bell nothing new

I'm sure as soon as the Steelers move their offer up Bell will be rapping about wanting more than what he just stated.

Mitchell did nothing last year, but steal a paycheck...

DON'T forget he took it to a locker room door and got the best verbality in and the door just stood there,......................

Addition by subtraction.!!!!!!!!!!

If that's all it took, Hernandez would be enshrined...

You see, that's the rub............ No one is held accountable. rayray should have been banned from football but NOW his being inducted into the hall of fame. Billicheat along with t*mmy b*y and kr*ft should all be banned for life but instead they will all be inducted into the HOF. NOW take Ben Rothlesberger, he never was charged with ANYTHING yet some here question his "first" ballot induction. Some say he needs another ring then he will make it in.......... Is Ben really that bad of a QB that he will be ONLY the second two-win SB QB to not be inducted?????? Him and Jim could sit together at the HOF game and hold hands singing Cume-By-Ya

For those of you saying he is greedy I ask you this.
How would you feel if you were
1. The best person in the world at your job.
2. The most productive person in history at your job statistically (total yards per game)
3. The second best at someone else's job, in which you get zero added compensation

Imagine having credentials like this,

Then you hear about a guy who is guaranteed more money than you have made in your ENTIRE CAREER. (Barkley) Before his first day on the Job.
How would you feel?

Marshall Faulk and Roger Craig want you to get them some back pay for doing someone else's work too. He's not the first RB to catch passes out of the backfield and be damn good at it. If he won't take 40 million guaranteed, he will either play under the tag or sit out. He has zero leverage. If he plays under the tag, get all you can out of him and then he can see what he's worth on the open market.

Mike Mitchell was a garbage player and one of my least favorite Steelers of all time.

As far as Bell goes they should try to sweeten his end enough to get him to show up for camp but more than 2 or 3 years at 14 million is too much

Evidently you've only been watching the Steelers for 2 years. Mitchell was very good before then and was universally considered a nice free agent signing.

Sweeten the deal up so Bell shows up....but more than $14 mill is to much. Well the Steelers have already offered him $14.5 mill a year. What's your next plan?

There's no point. Bell won't sign a long-term deal for less than $18 mill and he's not going to get that here. Get out of him what you can this year and hope Connor stays healthy and improves.
Rashard Mendenhall v. 2.0. More talented but just as stupid. His career will be about as long as Mendy's too.

Bell is apparently 'optimistic' that he will be in camp. Say the sides are much closer than last year.

Man do I hope he signs the franchise tag as that would guarantee he and his guaranteed money is gone after this season. I see us dumb enough to guarantee a big fat number and whoAla he is hurt or just wore out and can't perform but yet we are paying him, CAP HELL.

Put July 16 on your calendar. It's the last day we can sign Bell to a multiyear contract. If he isn't signed by that date, he will not be a Steeler, since he will want to test free agency.
