Dungy went undrafted in 1977 and was signed as a free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League as a safety. He played as a defensive reserve and special teams player for the Steelers in 1977 and the Super Bowl champion 1978 season,

Some might be too young to remember but Kevin Greene wasn't the only HOFer this year with Pittsburgh ties.

Back in the 70's Dungy was a DB on the Steelers and also the emergency QB, which unfortunately he had to do one day, thus becoming the only modern era player to both catch and throw an interception in the same game.

I am certain he will mention the Steeler organization in his acceptance speech....unlike a certain someone from an island in the South Pacific.

If Dungy is going in as a coach then why is Cowher not in??????

They are very similar in a lot of ways.

Not really sure.
I know Dungy beat every NFL team, but other than I don't know.

Dungy gets some credit for what he did in Tampa. He didn't win a Lombardi there, but they were the joke of the league for about 16-17 years before he got there, and he turned them into a powerhouse. In many ways his run in Tampa was like Cowher's before Ben got here. Held back by the lack of a quality qb. The coach who I can't understand not being in is Tom Flores, who won two Lombardi's, the second of which he won by destroying the defending champs. Maybe I need to look at his total record.

Dungy had a record of 138-69, .759 % and 1 SB. Cowher was 149-90, .623% and 1-1 in SB. Seems clear Tony would be first in bet Cowher still has a shot. Flores was 97-87-not in the picture.

I think dungy was not only first black coord he was also the youngest ever at the time.. dungy was like a football son to noll but I think history played itself out for the best. Cowher brought back that curtain kind of violence on defense and offense that's Pittsburgh football. If we are lacking anything now under Tomlin it's that. I think the hof hasn't considered cowher yet because they think cowher will coach again. But he'll get there.

Dungy is a class guy!

To be presented by a Steelers great....Donnie Shell

Congratulations Tony Dungy !!!!

I think Flores should be in too, even though he was the coach of the hated Raiders. Win two Super Bowls and it should be automatic.

If you are reffering to TROY, he most definately will reffer to the STEELERS organization in a VERY good heartfelt way. Troy knew it was time to go and like any champion, doidn't want to admitt it. His anger may have been directed at the STEELERS organization, but with time, Troy will figure it was directed at himself and father time. TROY will enter with heavy steelers ties and be dang proud of it. He might even have me INTRODUCE HIM and that would make me proud too !!!!!!!!

Dungy also has a losing record in the playoffs at 9-10 with 6 one and outs. He is not a HOF caliber coach.

Hmmm? He didn't mention one word of the Steelers organization when he entered the Polynesian Hall of Fame or something to that affect recently....This happen even after receiving a letter of kind words from Dan Rooney..

I hope your right...have you started writing your presenter speech yet?
