Lawrence Phillips, the former Nebraska football star who was facing a murder charge, was found dead Wednesday morning in his California prison.

Authorities at Kern Valley State Prison said they are investigating the death as a suspected suicide.

The prison staff was conducting security checks shortly after midnight local time Wednesday when they found Phillips, 40, unresponsive in his cell, according to a release from the prison. Phillips was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 90 minutes late.

Phillips was on trial for the alleged murder of his former cellmate at the prison. If convicted, he could have faced the death penalty.

He has been in prison since October 2008, where he was serving a 31-year sentence on various charges including inflicting bodily harm including domestic violence, corporal injury to a spouse, false imprisonment and vehicle theft.

Phillips played running back for Nebraska in the 1990s before a brief stint in the NFL. His pro career was cut short by a series of off-field incidents and legal issues.

Too bad for him. The Bungles were interested ...

Well that ended exactly as scripted... someone needs to force feed that story to troubled players everywhere...

Well, we can thank him for coming around when he did or we might not have had The Bus offered to us in a trade.

40 years old. It doesn't seem that long ago the Rams rolled the dice with him.

Absolutely zero ***** given. Every time I hear his name all I picture is the dented mailboxes he bashed his girlfriend's skull into.

And the dumb dumbs in the Rams FO who decided to get rid of Jerome

But Bus didn't "fit their system." Real brilliance there. Bus was an immensely special player and person and NEVER got in ANY trouble.

I am so glad Ben got him a ring to put a cherry on top of his career. That is an awesome story.

When Dick Vermeil gives up on you - it is the end.

I'm sure the cops pinned all those convictions on him them staged his murder as a suicide. I smell a Netflix documentary coming on...

I hate to see it. All that talent wasted.

People get on me about supporting Michael Vick, but he's an example of a guy who figured it out BEFORE it was too late.

I know alot of you fancy yourselves as hard ***** and don't believe in redemption, but stories like this one make me respect Mike just that much more.

I doubt his death was suicide...this is prison we are talkin bout. The only folks that commit suicide in prison are boys that refuse to be Bubbas ***** nightly and those that feel they are lifes disappointments and suicide comes early....not 15 years in.

Best move Dick Vermiel ever made. Thanks cry baby!!! LP has been my brother's "neighbor" so to speak for quite a few years. This guy was missing his soul from birth imo.
