Patriots release Ealy months after trading for him
Jack Browne Aug 26, 2017 2:58 PM
The New England Patriots released defensive end Kony Ealy on Saturday, the team announced.
The Patriots sent a second-round pick to the Carolina Panthers for Ealy and a third-rounder in March, but the pass-rusher struggled to cement his position for the reigning Super Bowl champions.
New England reportedly tried to trade Ealy before opting to cut him.
The Patriots were already thin at defensive end after losing rookie Derek Rivers for the season. They could look to make some moves to enhance their depth, either through a trade or when rosters are cut to 53 players.
Ealy never fulfilled the potential he teased with a three-sack performance for Carolina in Super Bowl 50. However, with teams always in need of pass-rushers, Ealy likely won't be unemployed for long
