JPJ Contract

Speaking if which, I remember when I had seats right by the tunnel and I was watching the players faces.....Ben was there, Villanova, Pouncey and some others......lmao.......most of them had jitters, were shaking their arms and legs, jumping up and down with nerves

And there was Pouncey motionless, with a stare that literally could have killed a human being. Honestly, if he had a knife on him I would have left the stadium. I just said to myself, that right there is a killer......stone cold bad mother. From what I've read, if there is a teammate who you want in your corner it was him......loyal and fierce

Maybe he made a couple of trips with Hernandez in his day...🤔

Do you think Porter is as good as McDuffie, Gardner, or Stingley?

Porter has averaged 1 INT a year for his career.

How many times did you say last year: wow, JPJ changed that game for us?

I’m not trying to bash him, I want him signed long term, but what about him deserves elite/top 10 money?
You deserve top 10 money when you are a top 10 CB. Over his career he hasn't been. Does he have the potential to be, I would say absolutely. If he was talking 30 million a year prior to last season everyone would have laughed him out of the building. He showed major improvement last season and if he takes his game up another notch then I would say they could consider a top contract.

I disagree, I think he was woefully underrated both the last two seasons. I think he went from top 10 to top 5 last year.

I agree but let's take a look at the fact we got him in the 2nd round. I realize he was the first pick in the 2nd round but we have been paying him 2nd round money so I'm gonna go with that
35% of CBs selected in the 2nd round start their first full year and that just means they end up starting at some point. Joey started from.day one
The hit rate of 2nd round corners becoming pro bowl players is 18% I realize he's not there yet but he's close

Then let's look at the last 30.years and say look.at all rhe cornerbacks drafted in the firstb3 rounds
1st
Deon Figures
Artie Burns
Chad Scott
2nd
Bryant McFadden
Ricardo Colclough
Senquez Golden
3rd
Curtis Brown
Keenan Lewis
Cameron Sutton
Justin Layne

There are some real doozies there for God's sake. Joey is better than all.of them and he keeps improving year to year. Now who knows what we get going forward but if he simply improves half of what he did last year this season he's elite based upon his trajectory. We finally hit pay dirt with a home grown kid whose Dad was a pro bowl player, SB winner, and coach here........for God's sake pay the kid
When you are an all pro you get paid like one
If not you shouldn't get paid like one until you are.

You do not pay 30 million per year based on an "if" or "trajectory"
They already made that mistake with Herbig and Metcalf

Despite all of his steps forward he didn't even grade out as the best CB on the Steelers in 2025

In 2025, the Pittsburgh Steelers featured a highly productive cornerback room, highlighted by elite coverage metrics and impressive Pro Football Focus (PFF) grades across their top defenders. [1, 2]
Specific overall defensive and coverage grades for the Steelers' key cornerbacks include:
    • James Pierre: Earned a standout 86.2 overall grade and an 88.9 coverage grade, ranking among the best cornerbacks in the entire NFL.
    • Jamel Dean: Registered an 80.6 overall grade and a 75.9 coverage grade. He allowed a phenomenal 47.7 passer rating when targeted.
    • Joey Porter Jr.: Finished with a 67.6 overall grade and a 74.1 coverage grade, while breaking up 11 passes and giving up just a 56.2 passer rating to opposing quarterbacks. [1, 2, 3, 4]

McDuffie is the better all around corner. he can play boundary and slot and they will blitz him too. He plays slot half the time. Porter plays slot 2% of the time. He's pretty much a boundary corner. If you want versatility and you want to move your corner around like a chess piece then McDuff is your guy but strictly looking at pure boundary cornerback play the metrics say Joey is the better man covering outside player. I guess you could say that McDuffie is the better all around player and the more valuable player but he ain't got nothing on Joey when comparing both of them as outside boundary corners covering 1s......Joey gives up less yards, less TDs, and QBs have lower ratings and completion % against him than Trent.

It really comes down to your schematics and want type of corners you want but what Joey does well he does at an ELITE level and in some cases better than almost every corner

You can't be nothing but extremely impressed with not giving up a coverage TD over 1,460 snaps..That's simply absurd

Here's the thing though. I would agree he isn't there yet. But look at TJ Watt. He's been top 10 since he entered the league, he's been the top some years, and now people piss and moan about his salary, saying he is getting paid for past performance. I don't blame Porter for trying to get as much as he can while he can.

I may have miss-read, but I thought TJ is now ranked 11th in the NFL. It was hard for me to believe that, but with him being taken out of play so easily……………. I could believe that rank to a degree……….

I better say this is “speculation” as I read an article but have no link.

20th overall and 5th highest non-QB behind Anderson, Parsons, Hutchinson, and Garrett.

Don't blame Joey one bit, it's business. Business with the same team who cut his father to save a few bucks. I would be doing the same.
Difference is
TJ earned every penny
Let's compare
What accolades has Joey Porter had in 3 years?

O pro bowls and NFL's most penalized at his position?

When TJ got his first extension in 2021 worth an average of $28/yr he was going into his fifth season as a 3x pro bowler, 2x 1st team all pro, and NFL sack leader.

I would love to hear the argument for Joey Porter making $28+ per year.

An ESPN survey among NFL executives, coaches, and scouts ranking the current top ten cornerbacks came out ten days ago. Porter didn't make the list.

1) Pat Surtain
2) Derek Stingley
3) Christian Gonzalez
4) Devon Witherspoon
5) Trent McDuffie
6) Quinyon Mitchell
7) Denzel Ward
8) Jaycee Horn
9) Sauce Gardner
10) Cooper DeJean

Porter was second in the honorable mention category, so I guess that makes him #12. I think he should be paid correspondingly.

Two of the top six guys are players I would have absolutely taken in the Steelers' draft position: Gonzalez and Mitchell. Instead they have Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu to show for it. I guess hope springs eternal that Fautanu can manage to stay healthy and develop into a good NFL lineman...meanwhile Mitchell is already a first-team all-pro.

Seriously....pro bowls? What about a real award such as MOTY? Watt has zip.🤔

Unfortunately we can't say how those players you wanted instead of the OLman would have turned out in the scheme/system that we ran here. You just might be showing them same disappointment for them that you have for Joey.

The argument for it is first off, it ain't your money. Second, if that is the going rate for a good young corner, then that's what you pay. Thirdly, the Steelers haven't had a good, young corner in a long time. All that said, I agree he isn't there yet. I'm squarely on the fence here, as you can tell.

I saw that list but using straight metrics I have him much higher.

Are you saying you are sitting on the “pivotal” point ???

I hear what you are saying, there should be some kind of incentive based laden in the contract.
