ESPN reporting the Jets have agreed to a one year 12 million dollar guaranteed deal.

Figured it would be short term. Apparently they aren't sold on Fitz as their franchise...........

I don't know what took so long; this seemed evident to end this way from a long time ago.

They could do worse.

Won't even be a pro bowler or anything. Then again, with everyone choosing not to play the pro bowl, I guess he could be.

Up to $3m in incentives according to the radio.

Fitz was the reason we backed into the playoffs last year. In the season finale he threw two key fourth quarter interceptions including one in the end zone. Good player but never a clutch player.

It's a 1 year contract because the Jets know Fitzpatrick is not great. It's Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker who make the Jets passing game. They spent a 2nd round pick on Christian Hackenberg which means they think he may be their future starter. Whenever you hear coaches talk about developing QBs, they always talk about "the room", meaning the QB meeting room.

QBs spend most of their time by themselves with the QB coach. If they want Hack to develop, they need a veteran in that room, otherwise it would just be Hack, Geno Smith, and Bryce Petty in there.

From what i've heard, Petty still has no idea how an NFL offense works, and Geno Smith got punched by a scrub and his teammates backed the scrub.

It was a smart move for The Jets and Fitz. They need each other. The Jets need an experienced QB and Fitz is smart enough to know he's better off throwing to Marshall and Decker than yo whatever crap team he may have had to play for if not the Jets.

The Rams cutting Nick Foles may have motivated Fitz as well. Fitz was pretty much the only veteran QB available, but a few more may come on the market as camps open.

Good for Fitz as he will make enough in one year to retire. I know for twelve million, I could retire 4+ times over, easily. Correct in saying they need each other and also correct in saying Fitz isn't the future for the Jets yet alone any team else.

Never thought Fitzpatrick would put together the career that he has. I have no problem with him trying to get the best deal as possible because his time with the Jets is coming to an end with the addition of Hackenberg.

Not super physically gifted, but smart. Never thought he'd be a sought after starter. Thought he would always be a back-up. A pretty good guy to have as a back-up.

I think the Jets putting out the offer with a 7pm deadline to accept yesterday lot the fire under Fitz.

A deal worth up to 15m for a career journeyman is good $. With camps opening his next option would've been a deal for far less than that from a team in an emergency situation due to an injury. This deal gives him continuity to work for that next deal. He was not going to look better in another uniform trying to play catch up. He knows the offense and has repor with Gailey.

Good move for both sides.

I'd say "smart enough." His Wonderlic score even puts Coach's to shame. Fitz slammed a 48, just two points from the perfect score.

He wasn't going to land ANYWHERE for $12 million. And he might not even land as a starter somewhere else. He HAD to take the Jets offer, he had no odds of doing any better elsewhere. Plus, having those WRs he can put up decent #s this season and might command a longer deal after this season, whether it's in NY or not.

Possibly, he could be set for life, but he won't be "living large" necessarily. NFL players only end up with half of their cash, after paying taxes and agent. He might be walking away with closer to $5 million. Could I live the rest of my life on $5 mill? Well, not if I made a few mistakes. A lot of seemingly prudent people end up broke. Mark Brunell was mackin' it large, at the time of his days as a starter. And he wasn't an idiot with things like buying multiple mansions and such (although he did have a sweet crib right just up the road from me at one point).

He thought he was doing the wise thing by investing his $ into land, business, etc. But then 2008 hit and he got smashed. It's tricky. The thing is, traditionally, you buy things like land and businesses and you end up far richer. But those days may be over, maybe forever. You'd like to put that $5 mill somewhere where you get 20% return, or at least 10%, but it takes risk. You just know the stock market is looking at a big future hit. Real big. Like, could cut in half type of hit. 20 years ago you could take $5 mill and grow it, while being safe. If you put money in the market the last 8 years, you would have done well. But how much longer will that ride last?

Fitz threw for 3,905 yards and 31 TD's, without a great group of skill guys to work with. The Jets got him for cheap and played it safe!

Fitz at 12 million a year of Joe Flacco at 20+ million a year. Bwahaha. Good move Ravens.

The Jets seem to think the PSU QB they took in round two is the future, so this move seems perfect for them.

Hackenberg was so overrated, it's not funny.

He "looks" like an NFL QB and he measures like on, but his brain is jacked and that's the most important part of making QB in the NFL.

The guy is also a jerk to people. He threw entire staff under bus, blaming coaches for his terrible season.

I NEVER saw what others did with the guy. He never looked that good to me. He sucks, actually. He will be next in the Jets long list of drafting losers at QB - they are nearly as bad as the Browns at drafting QBs and that is saying something.

I would've made it a 2 years 24M offer with 16M guaranteed. That way you could have him next season for cheap if he shines or cut him loose if not and only at a 4M cost.

Maybe he didn't want a 2 year deal but heck, he might had gotten desperate and accept it

Yeah, short term kinda works for both. If Fitz has one more big year he can get a nice contract there or elsewhere. If Hackenberg doesn't show he can take over the Jets can pony up in 2017 but thus far are no handcuffed to the 34 year old signal caller.

I'm with you on Hackenberg, however, he has the physical tools and upside. But his accuracy is an issue. The Jets reached for him in round two. But then again, they reached for Geno Smith in round two, and picked another QB in round three not so long ago.

Hackenberg has all the tools including accuracy but his problem is he tries to throw to the covered guys. He needs to learn to pre-read a defense, go thru his progressions, be comfortable enough in the pocket to set his feet and throw to the open guy. At Penn State he was constantly on his *** and I think predetermined who he was throwing to. I feel Allen Robinson being so good set him back to because he became a comfort blanket to just throw it up and hope he got it.

He definitely will need a year to undo the damage of that offensive coordinator and get his head back into how to be a QB. But if they can he might be the most talented QB in this draft.
