Never thought Fitzpatrick would put together the career that he has. I have no problem with him trying to get the best deal as possible because his time with the Jets is coming to an end with the addition of Hackenberg.
It's a 1 year contract because the Jets know Fitzpatrick is not great. It's Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker who make the Jets passing game. They spent a 2nd round pick on Christian Hackenberg which means they think he may be their future starter. Whenever you hear coaches talk about developing QBs, they always talk about "the room", meaning the QB meeting room.
QBs spend most of their time by themselves with the QB coach. If they want Hack to develop, they need a veteran in that room, otherwise it would just be Hack, Geno Smith, and Bryce Petty in there.
From what i've heard, Petty still has no idea how an NFL offense works, and Geno Smith got punched by a scrub and his teammates backed the scrub.
It was a smart move for The Jets and Fitz. They need each other. The Jets need an experienced QB and Fitz is smart enough to know he's better off throwing to Marshall and Decker than yo whatever crap team he may have had to play for if not the Jets.
The Rams cutting Nick Foles may have motivated Fitz as well. Fitz was pretty much the only veteran QB available, but a few more may come on the market as camps open.
Good for Fitz as he will make enough in one year to retire. I know for twelve million, I could retire 4+ times over, easily. Correct in saying they need each other and also correct in saying Fitz isn't the future for the Jets yet alone any team else.

Fitz threw for 3,905 yards and 31 TD's, without a great group of skill guys to work with. The Jets got him for cheap and played it safe!
Fitz at 12 million a year of Joe Flacco at 20+ million a year. Bwahaha. Good move Ravens.
The Jets seem to think the PSU QB they took in round two is the future, so this move seems perfect for them.
Hackenberg was so overrated, it's not funny.
He "looks" like an NFL QB and he measures like on, but his brain is jacked and that's the most important part of making QB in the NFL.
The guy is also a jerk to people. He threw entire staff under bus, blaming coaches for his terrible season.
I NEVER saw what others did with the guy. He never looked that good to me. He sucks, actually. He will be next in the Jets long list of drafting losers at QB - they are nearly as bad as the Browns at drafting QBs and that is saying something.
