Only takes one injury. Plus Hawkins never jumped ahead to be the rotational OT, so he has been nothing but a wait and see.
I doubt they will keep him since he got worse last year. If Chuks or anyone steps up, he is either gone now or probably after a year on IR.

“I didn't see it at all,” guard Ramon Foster said. “All I heard was him screaming.”
Hawkins wasn't the only casualty of the practice. Tight end Jake McGee, who spent last season on the practice squad, also was helped off with a left leg injury. NFL Network reported.

Guy goes down screaming, holding his knee and my guess immediately is ACL. I wouldn't count on him playing this year. That's our worst fears about OTAs and Training Camp. Its why Bell is smart to not show up for either.

If the right person with the right background wanted to make a **** load of money it would be in the research and prevention of non contact injuries in elite athletics. My personal opinion is that it is muscle imbalances. Why would a 26 year old guy tear his ACL blocking. If someone fell on him ok. But Id bet my left nut he was performing a movement like a kick step or reacting to the movement of a dlineman.
It has to do with body kinetics. With knees it is the momentum of the upper body working against the quick movement of the lower body in an opposing direction. Non-contact drills are not powder puff drills, or walking around. You are usually doing something physical, like changing direction, or hitting a sled, or hitting a pad. Rod Woodson was a perfect example of a non contact ACL tear. His upper body was moving one way, Barry Sanders Juked, Rod's elite quick twitch moved to match, but couldn't pull the force of his upper body with him and his knee gave.

I wasn't a fan of the Hawkins pick and he wasn't going to make the team this year unless another tackle got hurt.
Chuks did not work out well, and I'm still stuck on Mayock saying his film was average in a weak football conference.. We'll see. Maybe coach Munchak saw something. Not a fan of this pick...
If Chucks has to start as a rookie due to an injury to Gilbert or Big Al, the Steelers I think are in trouble.
It was a pure depth pick and lookie lookie we need that depth now. No one wants to see a starter get hurt. We need depth to compensate for injuries and whatnot. Now they also have the option to go sign a UFA T or wait to see who gets cut this summer so they have legitimate depth behind our Ts. Cutting Laundry saves $1.9M. Time to make that happen
You are as wrong about Hawkins making the roster, as you are about the Steelers drafting a punter in the 5th. Do you not understand depth charts? Steelers keep 4 tackles. You hate Chukes, you hate Hawkins, other than Villa and Gilbert, who are your other 2 tackles?

Thats pretty much what Im saying. Its an imbalance of power in the body. I just dont believe players in the 70s and 80s went out with this regularity from non contact injuries. The players are just too powerful. Ligiments and tendons cant keep up with the force generated. Ive been involved with hundreds of non contact practices. These guys are hurt because of the force they can produce.

I think you are reading me wrong.
I wanted a punter because Berry isn't very good and has a 1.9 million cap number The rookie ( Dickson ) I would have picked in round five is better and at least a 1.2 million a year cheaper on the cap.* It would have been a win-win.* When the time is right, we can see how Berry is doing and review if the Steelers made the right move.
I never said the Steelers would draft a punter. See the difference? I wasn't predicting the Steelers would draft a punter...
As for depth, that's nice.
3 of the top 4 picks of the draft went to the offense...yet our biggest needs were ILB, S, DT/NT.
I hated the Chucks pick because he worked out poorly, and according to Mayock, who's pretty good at what he does did not look good on film in a weaker football conference. * That is two red flags.* He's not American either and*grew up liking Soccer.* A third Red flag. Didn't some reports say he's a little soft too? Chucks has the best OL coach in the business. We'll see. I see a lemon here, but he made Hubbard who was a little shaky into very good back up / swing starter type.
I do not think*Chucks has the feet to play LT, and is a bit underpowered for RT.** If he's the primary back up, we are in trouble.

You don't know who much influence Munch had on the pick, do you? If Munch thought Hawkins was a good prospect, he was wrong.
Bottom line Much is not #1 or #2 influencer for picking players in the draft. That would be Colbert 1st, with Tomlin and the OC and DC next.
I do think Munch is a good coach because guys improve under his coaching.

You want to know how good Munch is? He's not only creating low and undrafted starters for our team, but for the league. Villa was an undrafted project, now he's a pro bowler. Beachum was a 7th rounder, undersized with terrible tech coming out of college. He's now a starter and we got a comp pick for him. Hubbard was undrafted and played at a small conference. He worked his way up, filled in exceptionally, and is now a starter in the league. These are just tackles under Munch. Hawkins was very good last year in spot duty and as the extra tackle. I think Munch knows what he's doing to assess and coach up tackles, history has shown that much.
And now I also know you have no memory when it comes to being wrong. You mock drafted a punter in the 5th (that's a prediction), and you and I had a long discussion about the Steelers need for a punter. My correct assessment is they didn't need one and I bet you they wouldn't draft one. You balked/repressed/ignored my points.
...And you are also very poor at assessing the talent of punters. That much is very evident to me.

I agree with you, we've got the best OL coach in the NFL. Where we differ is I do not think Chucks or Hawkings is the next Beachum. And this year Chucks likely will not be ready.
