Javon Hargrave needs more playing time

He won't get more as the Steelers play "sub package" football now and only use 2 DL in passing situations. At least, that's what the pundits say. I think he should play on pretty much every down but he won't move ahead of Heyward or Tuitt.

Just imagine a dline of Heyward-Hargrave-Tuitt on passing downs

Easy rotate between the three. Gets him on the field and keeps them fresher

IMO Hargrave should always be on the field. As he can collapse the pocket in the run game and passing game.

Been saying it for over a year. If you need to take someone out for an extra DB, you take out Williams and keep those three in with Watt, Bud and Shazier. A front 7 adding in Williams even on running downs sounds pretty good too.

Football still starts and ends at the line with the Big Uglies. If you can't get a push on O, you are screwed. If you can't get a push on D, you are screwed. Good/great teams do both consistently.

nothing new, we've been asking for it for more than two weeks

Aloualu is a good player. Keep rotating. Fresh pass rush. All three of him Tuitt and Heyward are capable of bullrushing the OL into qb.

The 2DL set is freaking rediculous. Even if you blitz / stunt you only have three or maybe 4 rushers, that gives QB so much time to do what they do. I say why change keep what's working and get that SACK when needed most. 3rd and 6 and we send 2 DL ..................****

Great article. It shows how disruptive Hargrave is, and how good a tackler Davis is!

Steelers Say They Want To Get Javon Hargrave More Playing Time

BY ALEX KOZORA NOVEMBER 6, 2017 AT 03:11 PM

It’s a good problem to have. But still, a problem, and one we’ve discussed a dozen times on this site. How does Javon Hargrave get more snaps?

It’s a question the Pittsburgh Steelers are still asking themselves.

With the bye week, the assistant coaches talked to the media and John Mitchell was asked about Hargrave’s playing time.

“I’d like to get him on the field more,” Mitchell said in an interview via Steelers.com. “But now I have a decision. I have to take either Cam or 91 off the field.”

For the year, Hargrave has played 47% of the defense’s snaps, a number that has been helped at least a little by the absence of Stephon Tuitt. Cam Heyward is at an 85% clip and only counting games Tuitt has finished is even higher, playing 86.7% of the time.

But Hargrave’s talent and production is undeniable and the always candid Mitchell had nothing but good things to say about him.

“This man is a smart guy. He has the physical attributes to be a good football player and he’s showing it every week. I got nothing but a lot of praise for him. But he’s doing it every day in practice.”

Rare praise on such a young player. We have an interview with Aaron Smith tomorrow who has a different experience early in his career with Mitchell. But Hargrave’s earned it all, already matching last season’s sack total of two. He made impactful play after impactful play in last Sunday’s win over Detroit, including a 4th and goal pressure to preserve the win.

Getting into specifics, Mitchell talked about what makes Hargrave as successful as he’s been.

“First of all, he uses his hands. For a young guy, in his second year, he uses his hands as well as anybody I’ve had this early in his career. And plus, he can get off blocks. And this guy, it doesn’t look like he’s running fast but he’s running pretty fast…he’s a smart football player. Good football players get blocked but don’t stay blocked.”

In a world of sub-package football, it’s tough to find room for a nose tackle. But the Steelers need to find the magic touch, the right balance, to keep Hargrave on the field.

so no 3 DL front...

that's all I got from that interview, sucks

It's apparently beyond my reason of understanding, but I can't understand why the Steelers can't go with Heyward, Hargrave, and Tuitt all in their sub package.

Exactly. If they need to replace ANYONE to play their sub-packages all the damn time, it needs to be #98. There is simply no reason that Vince Williams is EVER attempting to cover a back, tight end, or receiver. Hargrave has been pretty damn solid since he was drafted, and had a helluva game against the cardiac cats last week. No reason that him, Tuitt, and Ironhead aren't on the field on passing downs. This three alone could probably be worth at least 14-17 sacks a year if not more, and a good amount of pressure the rest of the time.

I would love to see Heyward, Tuit, Hargrove and Alualu all in there as a 4 man front at times. Get the big boys in there and get the push on passing downs.

I've been saying this for a year now, obviously it's a rule that we only use 2DL on passing downs.

I'd rather have Hargrave on the field than Gay. Can he cover?

During the Dallas game on Sunday, Romo was commenting how Dallas only had 3 linemen (he called them "big guys") in the game at one point and couldn't stop the run on a 3rd down. I started laughing. We would have 2 "big guys" in trying to stop the run.

I don't get the 2DL set. Really it's like daring the QB to beat us with a pass rush that doesn't get any pressure thus the ALL DAY effect.
