Jarvis Jones the next to leave?

Not really seeing why people are just viewing Billings as a NT. He can play in our nickel and dime front easily. Providing a pass rush and strengthening our run defense in those formations. A lot teams get us out of our base not to throw but to run. He would go a long way into stopping that tactic.

In our sub package we slide Heyward and Tuitt inside and use OLBers on the ends. I hear what you are saying and would love 4 big guys rushing the QB at times but we don't do it. So where/what would your formations be? And do you think we would changed up our subpackage? Or are you thinking something entirely different?

We don't do it because we don't have a 3rd monster to put next to heyward and tuitt, that could easily be billings; the 4th player could be Dupree/Harrison. Try to run against that and they all can rush the passer
 
He would be in the rotation with Tuitt and Heyward. Who snaps we are trying cut some..also Heyward and Tuitt can play DE in those fronts also IMO.

Billings is somewhat like Aaron Donald ex Pitt super steeler fan super duper good guy, in that he may be able to play off set. With good bookend defensive ends an offset tackle is very hard to block, especially if they have enough the speed and strength to beat the gap tween guard and center. We need a guy that can start with tuitt and Haywood or sub for them.but let's say you had billings lined up with tuitt and hay you could shift the blitz like the Broncos did against Brady and cam and blitz either olb and drop the other in coverage like the Broncos did when they picked off cam in the Super Bowl. I see billings playing for us but not in the same way Hampton did.

The criteria I used were younger OLBs drafted in the first 4 rounds within 40 snaps of JJ

Nate Orchard (drafted 51st age 23): 36 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 FF, 1 Int. 473 snaps
Jarvis Jones (drafted 17th age 26): 29 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 FF, 1 Int. 452 snaps

Comparing apples to apples he looks dangerously average, not what ya want from a first rounder...but it is at least an accurate comparison. Not putting him up against people whose snaps range from the 800+ to 1100 range and calling him the 60th of 64 "starters" when he took the least snaps of any of our top 4 OLBs"

But isn't the reason that Jarvis only plays 452 snaps and not 800 because he's not that good? You are coming at it as if JJ is splitting time because he's a young player still learning the ropes but that's not the case. He was handed the starting job and couldn't keep it.

This makes no sense why would you cut a third round pick. What would be the motivation behind that??

You can't necessarily say that the reason is he is not that good as for why the Steelers use the rotation. They do it on both sides for a myriad of reasons that are not solely focused on Jarvis Jones

Because he isn't very good. I agree with POP. Tombert has bombed several draft picks and I'm convinced they kept some of them around hoping against hope that they'd turn it around and not make Tombert look like morons. Cap hits may have something to do with their decisions but politics is a bigger part of who this coaching staff decides to play than any other time in Steelers history.

No I mean according to pop's reasoning..that if he was a third pick he would be cut already. If he was third round pick expectations would of been way lower. Also adding the injury why would the Steelers have more incentive to cut him??

When you see Dupree NOT splitting time at the Left OLB position this year,, then you will know you are wrong. Deebo was the best OLB on our team last year. But hes like 57 now..
 
Dupree comming off his FIRST year shows more upside than Uncle jarvis sans three. We use to have a guy named Durpee, but he must be in tomlin's doghouse or a slow playbook learner. Haven't seen him play yet, but was very popular with some here...........

I would argue that they kept him because 1) it would be too big a cap hit since he's getting first round money and 2) they hope he gets better so it doesn't make Tombert look bad for taking him in the first round.

And I find it unprofessional and immature: Makes ALL decisions on what's best for the team, not on what protects egos and avoids blame. I detest that mode. I know I am going to hear it (go for it), but this is one area I admire about Belichick; they have no problem tossing away players who are not cutting it, regardless if it is an admission of making a personnel mistake or not. The Steelers routinely allow ego protection into the equation of who to keep, or even, who to play.

Your point has some credence, and maybe as a 3rd rounder, he wouldn't seem so bad. But I maintain they were in ego protection mode, as Tomlin ACTUALLY SAID, "He's offered solid play." How is doing NOTHING out there being solid? I'd say if he had 8-10 sacks, forced more turnovers and made more tackles - especially some for a loss - THAT would be "solid" play. But in no way can you claim JJ's production is "solid" for the ROLB in this D.
 
If JJ was a third round pick I doubt that would mean he would have been cut. Our expectations would not have been as high and we would have been looking for another ROLB sooner. He would still be a backup/special teams guy with a cheaper cap hit. IMO, JJ is Carlos Emmons 2.0, only drafted higher.
 
5 career sacks in 3 seasons, as a first round pick, nothing else needs to be said.
 
You don't draft a "special" player in the 1st round and then use him in a platoon unless he sucks and he does suck.
 
Tombert showed more quickness, speed and agility galloping to the podium to select the bum with 14 minutes left on the clock than he has exhibited in his career.
