Jarvis good enough to play all downs on either side?!?!?!?!?!

Kinda like when people refer to Troy Edwards as the Steelers biggest draft bust of all time.

He was one of them. What did he ever do, other than run his mouth? He most certainly was one of their biggest draft busts.

OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS

Jarvis Jones: 57 snaps, 75 percent

James Harrison: 38 snaps, 50 percent

Arthur Moats: 37 snaps, 49 percent

Anthony Chickillo: 19 snaps, 25 percent

Jones saw a similar amount of snaps as opposed to Week 1, and he deserved them. Jones has played well over the first two games in a contract year with a lot on the line. He only ended with two tackles against the Bengals, but set the edge in run defense and was sound with his technique. Harrison's snaps increased by 7 percent, while Moats' decreased an equal amount. Although Moats did have the Steelers' lone sack of both the game and season. Bud Dupree's absence in the rotation is showing in the Steelers pass rush. Out of this group, it appears on film that Moats has been the most productive in at least quarterback hurries. It will be interesting to see if Chickillo, who excels in the pass rush, will see his time increase in an effort to get after Carson Wentz.

I think it's just another one of those things where they keep trotting him out there hoping something good happens to justify his first-round status. Again, if he was taken in the third or later then no one is bitching about it.
I said from the beginning that his back problems would keep him from getting strong enough to be effective in the NFL.
They were right not to give him an extension for a little motivation and i wouldn't offer him any more than vet minimum next year.

He'll get more than vet min.

Probably a Moats type deal from us if he wants it, but will probably value himself more than that and go elsewhere.

The Steelers' Jarvis Jones practices at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex in the South Side. Jones has seen more playing time in the first two games of the season than any other of the team's outside linebackers.

Steelers notebook: Linebacker Jarvis Jones getting more playing time
September 22, 2016 12:00 AM
By Ray Fittipaldo / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Three days before the season opener against the Redskins, Steelers defensive coordinator Keith Butler revealed that he planned to rotate his outside linebackers at the start of the season. The reasoning behind the decision was hot and humid weather and the fact that none of the four outside linebackers were in game condition yet.

It didn’t take Butler and head coach Mike Tomlin very long to change their minds. They’ve seen something they like in Jarvis Jones and he’s playing far more than anyone expected, including him.

Jones, who is in the final season of his rookie contract, has played 74 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. It’s a big jump from what he was asked to do in his first three seasons.

As rookie, Jones played 59 percent of the defensive snaps. He injured his wrist early in his second season and played only 23 percent of the snaps. Last season, when he was expected to take a big step in his development, he only played 41 percent of the snaps, fewer than James Harrison, Bud Dupree and Arthur Moats, the other linebackers in the rotation.

“I didn’t expect it, but that’s the rotation now,” Jones said Wednesday. “They’re definitely rocking with me and giving me an opportunity. I just have to take advantage of it.”

Jones has been thrust into a more prominent role with Dupree out for at least the first half of the season with an abdominal injury. Dupree was set to be the starter on the left side and Jones on the right. But with Dupree out, Jones is playing both sides.

“Jarvis has played well for us and we want to find ways for him to continue to play, even as we rotate others in, so he’s been the guy we’ve identified of being capable of playing on either side,” Tomlin said.

Jones, the No. 17 overall selection in the 2013 draft, is busy trying to learn as much as he can about playing on the left side of the defense. He played the vast majority of his snaps on the right side his first three seasons.

Playing on the right side of the defense always meant playing the run well because most offenses run to the right the majority of the time. Playing on the left side means Jones will get more opportunities to rush the passer, but it also means he’ll be seeing the best pass protectors in the league because offensive coordinators usually put their top tackles on the left to protect the quarterback’s blind side.

“I’m dropping into coverage, too, but I have to take advantage of my opportunities when I do get a chance to pass rush,” Jones said. “I need to finish my rushes. If I can make all this stuff happen, get the sacks, drop into coverage … you have yourself a really good linebacker, and that’s the point I need to get to.”

Jones doesn’t have a sack yet — the Steelers only have one as a team — but he knows the coaching staff and front office expect him to produce. It’s one of the reasons the team did not pick up his fifth-year option in the spring.

Outside linebackers in the Steelers defense have to produce sacks in order for the unit to be effective on the whole. Jones has just five sacks in 39 career games, but he’ll have plenty more opportunities to produce this season if he continues to play as much as he has the first two weeks.

“They’re looking for me to do things upstairs,” Jones said. “I’m looking to do big things down here in the locker room and on the field. Everyone knows what’s going on. It’s not like anyone is in the dark. Coach Tomlin keeps things pretty black and white around here, which is the way we like it so we’re not in the dark. For me, I just have to take care of business and do what I need to do and we’ll see where things fall.”

Practice report

Receiver Markus Wheaton, who missed the first two games with a shoulder injury, was a full participant in practice and said afterward he is planning to play Sunday… Fullback Roosevelt Nix (back) was a limited participant in practice. … Reserve offensive lineman Cody Wallace (knee) did not practice. … Several veterans were given the day off, including offensive lineman Ramon Foster and running back DeAngelo Williams. … Players had to break up two fights between offensive lineman Marcus Gilbert and practice squad defensive lineman Cashaud Lyons during practice, according to sources

I thought he looked better on the left side last game.

Actually I'm more disappointed that Tuitt didn't have any sacks yet. Butler is allowing those guys to rush also ala Watt in Houston. They have to cash in also..
Agree but it's tough to get sacks when you rush 3 and even when we rush 4, there are 2 D-linemen and 2 OLB's, with one being an easy block in Jarvis. So, he and Heyward are typically double blocked.

Harrison has played also and he doesn't have one yet either.

Oh and "Kevin" Chickillo doesnt either and he is a future hall of famer

STEELERS Jones’ burgeoning relationship with ‘Deebo’ been key to turnaround

STEELERS LINEBACKER JARVIS JONES IS OFF TO A GOOD START. - MATT SUNDAY / DKPS
COMMENTS
The way James Harrison sees it, if any of his teammates look at him as a role model, that’s up to them.

Harrison is not going to take anybody under his wing, that’s for sure. That wouldn’t be very Deebo-like, now would it? That wouldn’t play well into the baddest man on the planet perception he portrays.

“I am just doing what I do and if anybody wants to follow my example and that’s great,” Harrison was telling me Friday as the Steelers wrapped up their practice week before traveling to Philadelphia for Sunday’s game against

“Jarvis is doing a great job,” Harrison said. “He is doing better than he has done in the past so that’s a good thing. He will continue to improve.”

I will just go ahead and assume that this is one of the times we don't pay attention to what a player says in an interview.

Unless of course it validates a statement on a message board

Don't you even read.

“Jarvis is doing a great job,” Harrison said. “He is doing better than he has done in the past so that’s a good thing. He will continue to improve.”

Jones already has more than 1/4 of his total tackles thru 2 games than he had the entire season last year. You are a joke.

Oh look another stats tell the whole story guy.

I'll agree with drafting another OLB high. I also think Tomlin and Butler should give some of Jones snaps, especially on 3rd down as a pass rusher to Moats or Chickillo.

What have they to lose at this point?

They probably feel that what they lose by taking Jones out is the player with the third highest amount of QB pressures on the team. Quiet as it's kept, Jones also has the most most tackles by an outside linebacker on the team. No, he's not a world beater, but his stats indicate he's the best they have at OLB ... which kinda sucks.

If I didn't see him getting rag-dolled by the guy blocking him time and again I'd put this off as standard Steeler Fan whining when a LB doesn't get a sack every time he rushes the passer. But the fact is Jarvis lacks the upper body strength to shed blocks.

Ahhh, but if he's the leading OLB when it comes to QB hurries, what does that say about the others and their ability to shed blocks and get to the QB? I mean our ONE sack on the season has come from Moats on basically a gimme sack or what was once known as a "Gildong".

This has been Jarvis's best start so far. He's playing solid but not wowing. I'd like to see more as the season rolls along.

Saw tuitts name get brought up, he plays DE and has been here 1 year less than Jones, but has more career sacks than Jones. I'm not even sure Jones=Haggans, and being a first round pick, the expectations should be higher for him

Oh look another stats tell the whole story guy.

He's another board moron who highlights a part of a statement and leaves off highlighting the "he's doing great " part.

All you havery to know about this idiot is that he thinks Timmons sucks.

I read the article and he painted a convincing picture of Timmons loss of effectiveness this year. Timmons has been our rock for almost a decade. He's rarely hurt, and when he wasn't, he was playing nearly 100% of the defensive snaps EVERY GAME. It is plain to see that the writing on the wall is Timmons probably won't be back next year. His playing time has diminished significantly, his speed has lost a step, and that is noticeable in games. He's being taken off the field now in 3rd down situations, which never happened before.

However, he is still effective, he can still make plays, and he knows the defense probably better than anyone on this team. He will get playing time, he will get tackles, and he will make splash plays. Kudos to the steelers for being respectful of his contract, by letting him play it out. He deserves a nice payday for his final season, as he prepares for retirement, and fortunately, his numbers are off the books next year. Money wise, we get $15M back in cap space at the end of this season. Though Decastro's cap goes from $5.27 this year to 11M next year, it still leaves an extra $4M to sign our stars.

I'll write a cap article later to go over the numbers.

No one has argued Timmons' effectiveness is diminished. However, as you say, he is still effective. Far cry from"sucks".

The article is a partial rebuttal of another idiot StarSpangledBanner (may he the same idiot). One "missed tackle", LT stoped the guy while others engaged and still had his hand on the guy when he went down.

Another "slow in pursuit ", where a Buck LB chases down a RB from behind...slow, my ***.

Sounds like SSS, trying to create his own Gildong report. Stupid **** lime that is why Super and I coined Timdong.

Harrison is still our best OLB and that's an issue, but I'm fine with Jones getting the snaps. Do you think we are going to get much more production with Moats or Chickillo?

Or if they move Jones to the other side then they can keep Harrison on the field.
