James Harrison retires

Get over rit already people....He wasn't getting on the field and wanted to freakin' play....Yea he went about it wrong, but dude had one last shot and he knew it. Can't fault him for that...

This will be forgotten as time goes on.....

Exactly! He went about it wrong. Waaay wrong. And yes, you can and SHOULD fault him for that. The way he engineered his departure is just as much a part of his legacy as the sacks, the hits, the Super Bowl INT. All of it was done by James Harrison. Can't cherry pick the good and leave the bad **** out. This isn't Woodson leaving at the end of his contract because he wanted a lil more cash, playing time and not to be moved to Safety.
Still love the plays he made for the team. I'd have a problem with him being in the Steelers Hall Of Honor simply because the way he engineered his departure is the total antithesis of "honor".

There goes our only pass rush for the past decade

Retire In Peace

I think a few folks believe they would have seen the Deebo of old make a reappearance if only they had given him more playing time. Wasn't going to happen. And his level of play while a *Cheat showed me nothing that says the Steelers/Tomlin made the wrong choice. You could have gotten play at that level from Moats. Moreover, James is an *** for the way he worked to get out of town. Giving him more playing time because he was acting like some spoiled ******* kid? Yeah, that's a good message to send to the rest of the team: "Pout, act like an *** and let your teammates down and we'll give you more playing time." Y'all would have really had your panties in a bunch about Tomlin losing the team, not being respected by the players, etc. if reports came out saying Harrison was rewarded with more playing time after pulling all that ****.

**** James Harrison.

But it's a chicken or the egg kind of thing. Was he not getting playing time and then acted like an *** because he saw the writing on the wall or was he not getting playing time because he was acting like an *** from the beginning? From his own account, he said he was promised playing time back in training camp which is what made him even want to come back this year. From what I gather, after the first few games of that proving to be false, that is when he started acting out. I agree, you shouldn't reward a guy for acting out from that point so the Steelers were in a tough place once he started doing that and probably should've just let him go the moment he started becoming an issue. But does it even get to that point if he would've gotten in on a decent amount of snaps from the get go like he was promised? I'm willing to bet no.

And further, why promise him snaps if he clearly wasn't in the plans from the beginning? I could understand if guys ahead of him were performing but that wasn't the case. After James sealed the KC win with a sack you thought that he might be rewarded with more PT but the opposite happened. My point is, I can see why he would be pissed the way it seems like he was told one thing but the coaches didn't follow through. That still doesn't excuse him from acting like an angry teenager but it doesn't bother me. It's no worse to me than a team cutting a guy mid-contract. Just an overall odd situation from both sides.

He shouldn't have been shocked at that point in his career to know it was a possibility for it to shakeout that he received less snaps. I think Watt developing quick, kept him on the field longer. And then perhaps in pass coverage they saw slippage in James' game. And said oh **** he is a liability now.

You think one way and then your opinion changes so you bench him.

**** happens. Then you suck it up and STFU.

And it wasn't just one time or even two. Reports are he was habitually doing things to cause conflict.

Perhaps Steelers at first didn't want to be void of depth.

As it became tiresome they cut the cord.

I offer no sympathy for players who are told something, the then situation changes. Then they have a meltdown.

It is a coach's job to identify which players give you the best chance to win. So they were developing Watt and using Chickillo in coverage.

When you are under contract at any given time you can play less or more.

What what happened if you gave in to every jagoff that didn't get their way and had a school yard temper tantrum?

You would open the door for even more problems.

James made his bed, now I am throwing it out to the curb.

Good riddance.

I get that he was "promised" playing time in the off season. Things change. Maybe Watt developed quicker than they anticipated. Maybe when they got to camp they saw that Harrison lost a step. You can't expect coaches to honor "promises" made in the off season if either of those things happened. As far as "which came first". To me it doesn't matter, act like a professional. I've seen AB get roasted on here for knocking over a water cooler. Harrison pulls all the crap he pulled and it's like ..."Well, he was promised" .. and that makes it excusable.

As far as the guys ahead of him performing. Early in the season, you had Watt who needed the playing time to get acclimated. Dupree who was playing hurt, but they needed to see him play to make a determination about his future and Chick, who they also wanted to see if he had improved enough to be the primary backup on both sides. I'm guessing that while all this was happening early in the season, Harrison started stewing about playing time. Then acting out. Pretty soon it becomes a standoff of Harrison's making as now they can't give him the playing time even if they wanted to because it would look like they were caving to his immature behavior. Again, just a guess.

Glad the drama ended. Now I can go back to my positive feelings about a great player. In the post mortem, I agree with Rooney. There is blame to go around on both sides. James didnt handle his demotion professionally, however Tomlin missmanaged him badly. He easily could have had a closing pass rusher role. His Tomahawk strip sack could have been a game changer against the Pats or the Jags. Defense badly missed that type of game changing play down the stretch.

Never bothered me. He could have been cooler about it but Tomlin and Co. could have to. I mean ******* Arthur Moats was getting a game day hat... Moats 8 total tackles 0 sacks Moats. Harrison had 3 sacks and played 67 GD snaps in 2017.

the man busted his *** to be in playing shape. the coaching staff and organization said that there was going to be a place for him here.
and people are legitimately still pissed about him going somewhere else to continue his career?
grow the **** up. being mad at him for going to a championship contender that was WILLING TO USE HIM is childish

Maybe Tomlin was cool about it. Maybe Harrison just fell down the depth chart. And then he wasn't going to reward him for being a malcontent.

Maybe he handled the best he could.

As far a Moats wasn't he given a hat for ILBer depth?

I just feel some fans are trying really hard to find fault outside of Harrison. Maybe it is as simple as Harrison being a twatwaffling disruption.

WTF should someone declining and being a cancer be rewarded with reps?

I mean ****.

This is the point. Both sides could and should have handled it better. We can be pissed at James for going to NE and being a douche, but Tomlin and Co. had a hand in it, too. I can see his point that he just wanted to play and should have been a better teammate. On the other hand, cutting him loose was a head scratcher when we knew where he was going.

Have you read anything or are you just diarrhea of the mouth? It isn't childish not to like someone's childish actions. If he would have went to the cheats, without being a ******** on the way out. You would have heard crickets.

Twisting the situation to the fans are just being kindergarten-ish, is ridiculous.

Deebo gave plenty of reasons to not care for how he was acting. Try to grasp that before calling others childish.

Moats got a hat because he plays special teams. When was the last time Harrison played special teams? If he'd lost a step, would he even be adequate on special teams? Would he accept the challenge of playing on ST or just mope and pout because he wasn't getting enough playing time on defense? (I think we know the answer to the last)

i didn't call you childish specifically.
i'll stand by it though. who gives a ****, he didn't get his chance here. so he found one. nothing wrong with that to me

is what you are saying really that if he hadn't gone to the patriots you wouldn't care? the man wanted to make a run at a title. turns out, it wasn't going to be here

i hate the patriots, but if he wants a ring, that was the best place to choose to go. it is what it is, he didn't get it. then he quit the game. both things are totally good to me. **** it. i certainly was not rooting for new england so james could get another ring. **** that

sure any player who wants out shouldn't honor their contract **** it. Would I have been fine with Deebo going there as a free agent? I wouldn't have cared for it. But damn sure could have dealt with it a lot better if he would have done it in free agency. And not forced the Steelers hand, trying to be ******* of the year.

As far as rooting for anyone to get a ring outside of Steelerland? no ******* way

Wait, wait, waaaaait a minute....his departure is just as much a part of his legacy as all his clutch plays, particularly his SB interception?? You serious with this stupid ****??? Holy **** you are scorned!

Being a player is just more than the plays you make. It is how you carry yourself on and off the field.

Not any different than any other job. You do some stupid **** away from the job, you could very well find yourself without one.

Cool, so no need to get upset about any of the Bell contract negotiations. I mean his Steelers legacy is what it is as far as what he's given on the field. No need to talk about the blunts, the tweets ... none of it. Because that stuff is not part of his legacy.

Of course the off the field stuff is part of Bell's Steelers legacy. Just as this stuff is part of Harrison's. You'll remember this stuff too when you think of Harrison. Maybe not as quickly as the plays, but you will remember it.

Because that was proving to be effective...

And they were worried about depth only during the regular season but not the playoffs?

I never once said he was right to act the way he did. I just said I can understand why he was upset. The guy most likely delayed retirement a year because he was promised playing time. I'd be pissed too if I was in his shoes. I would think most people would handle it better but the guy is a competitor and just wanted to play, can't fault him for that. His antics take him down a peg for sure but he's still one the Steeler greats in my book.

If he comes back to Pit to live with his family, all will be forgiven, and he will be remembered for the Champion that he is.

He lives(d) in Wexford. Had to refuse him delivery from our pizza hut a few weeks before he moved to the pats because he was out of range.

(Troy did, however, and was extremely generous to our guys)

Sorry, but no way in ******* hell is his unfortunate choice to depart the way he did, is as impactful or memorable as his hall of fame-level moments on the field for many seasons. To say otherwise is just some sour grapes bullshit
