J. Jones breakout year

I think Jarvis Jones needs a good camp to keep snap count to the level it was in 2015 .

Chickillo should be better with a year under his belt transitioning from End to OLB. I wish Tomlin gave Chickillo a few of Jones snaps as a pass rusher just to see what he could do, but it didn't happen.

DT Hargrove ( round three pick ) looks to be a valuable add to the 4 man rush. He's quick and plays with a low pad level. Hargrove could possibly be pushing Tuitt or Heyward to End in the four-man front, which could limit Jones opportunities as that's where he plays. It's all about getting the best players on the field.

That base 4 man rush would look like Heyward-Hargrove-Tuitt-Harrison. Each player in my book is a better pass rusher than Jarvis Jones, and I'm fully aware Hargrove hasn't played a down yet in the NFL.

Since Jones can't play kick coverage or in the nickel/dime as a linebacker, his value to the team is pretty low.

I would like to see Chickillo get some reps

Dupree struggled last year but even so, there were several moments where you saw him make a great play that showed his athleticism. You saw the potential to be great. We have never seen that from Jarvis.

Jarvis works hard and gives great effort but his limited athleticism just makes him average. When Jar is makes a play it is either the result of him getting a free run, or from hustle and the QB holding the ball too long.

I actually can see Jarvis getting re-signed. If Dupree has a breakout year, then Jarvis may be OK because he'd be, at best, the 4th pass rusher teams account for behind Dupree, Heyward, and Tuitt. If that's the case then he may be able to get 5 or 6 sacks, play decent against the run and be a decent player.

Jarvis may be cheap. Few teams will pay big money for a limited pass rusher who is already getting old, and has a chronic back issue that may be what limits him and will only get worse.

That time of the year again...optimistic articles about Uncle Jarvis.

Coach, be honest now. No one is pushing for Tuitt's time. He is a ******* monster. He reminds me of A.Smith. Very hard nosed, does his job, does it with a high motor, and shuts down the run. Hargrave is a 4th round question mark. The only way he's taking Tuitt's position is if Tuitt is hurt.

I can tell you just how forgettable his play has been so far. I've seen every Steelers game since he's been drafted and for the life of me I can't tell you anything about him other than he's a linebacker.

Lol. That is true

i think the plan is for Hargrave to play NT and also serve as backup at DE in the sup packages. Heyward and Tuitt are playing too many snaps if they are going to be pass rushers. Heyward played almost 1000 snaps. It would be a lot better if he was around 850.

If Hargrave can take just 10 snaps per game from Heyward and Tuitt that's 160 and would drop Tuitt and Heyward down into the 800s which can make a huge difference.

I hope this is a breakout year for Uncle Jarvis.
I hope the Steelers break out a fresh batch of pink slips and give him the first one out of the pack before the season starts.
He's awful and has zero redeeming qualities.

At this point I'd love a breakout year so someone can sign him and overpay and we get a 3rd round comp for him. What I saw from JJ when he came out of college and down is he still uses his hands well but in college his speed and strength were good enough to get to the QB but in the NFL he can't overcome his lack of athleticism.

Unless he has packed on 40 pounds of muscle and really build up those chicken legs it is it's not gonna happen. Jarvis Jones is just too weak to effectively play his position.

Except for the play where he forced a fumble against the Bengals in the playoffs that helped us go to Denver. Guess you guys missed that little play

yeah, that one. Anything else??

Very good against the run last year. Set the edge very well last year. Or the interception deep in Steelers territory in the beginning of the colts game after a fumble.

Cope,

I was talking about rookie Hargrave in the 4 man rush limiting J Jones snap count, and either Heyward or Tuitt moving out to end on obvious passing downs ( Jones spot ), pushing Jones off the field. It's all about getting the best 4 man rush.

Hasn't shown anything in 3 years, why will he now. Oh, it's his contract year. That is the only reason I can see. But I still don't buy it.
Wouldn't shock me in the least for Jones to get 8 sacks this year and we franchise tag him for $15 million next off-season.
They got burned once with Worilds, who had more potential upside than Jones, I don't see it happening again.

LOL.... I thought we said the same thing comparing Worilds to Max Starks.....

Teams don't learn.... very short memories in this business for some reason.

Difference is that Starks was far better at his position than Worilds was at his.

But Tomlin said he was "playing solid." So, is Tomlin just that smarter than all of us and sees things we don't? Nothing is showing up in the stats that indicate he is worth jack shack.

That's just MT prodding with a little confidence rather than rip a guy in the press. Frankly I think it's time to try ripping J.J. in the press.

He set the edge "very well"?? If anything, his run D was "ok", and not all the time.

What game did you see that he gave up the edge? Jarvis was very good against the run last year its OK to say. Does he need to improve against the pass and get some sacks yep. Doesn't mean he didn't improve and its OK to say so
