Its gonna be Vander Esch

Id like Vander Esch. I wouldnt move up to get him. They have three or four ways to go. I could live with all three. I just dont want the QB from Oklahoma State Rudolph. I think that is a totally unnecessary pick. Let a good defender fall to you. Vander Esch, Evans, Reid. No one makes it that far trade into the early second if someone is real hot for Rudolph.
I think that Rudolph is the only dumb move for the Steelers.

I say this only as a precautionary reminder. Not that I think LVE will end up as this guy did. However, every year folks fall in love with "measurables"; Height, Weight, Speed. Many times we forget about production, experience and level of competition. So, LVE's one year of starting in the Mountain West Conference scares me.
Anyway, the precaution: Mike Mamula

Again, Ben played in the MAC, Antonio Brown played in the MAC, Javon Hargrave played in the MEAC, etc. Does that make them less qualified to be NFL players? So LVE's college competition can "scare you," but have that factor lead you to pass on a 6'4", 256 lb. guy who runs a 4.65, has a 40" vertical, 22 reps, and played - PLAYED - at a tremendous level makes no sense.

Yes, he had injuries in 2016 as a sophomore and missed half the season. Evans had injuries last year and still cannot run a 40 (or just doesn't want to run the 40, one or the other). So what? He played a great season last year.

Oh, and remember one criticism of Watt last year? "Oh, he had one good season." Yeah, I remember that. Those who made the statement were WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. I feel the same about LVE. Guy is a football player with significant physical tools, a great work ethic per everybody in the know, great production last year, and somebody who would be a top-10 guy if he played his senior season, IMO.

All of those MAC players you mentioned started more than one year. They were experienced.
Watt started one year against stiffer competition AND, lest you forget, had a future HOF brother to mentor him at the position.
Again, I'm not saying LVE is a one hit wonder or a workout warrior. But, there has to be a level of concern with him. I'm not jumping on the bandwagon until/unless he's a Steeler. If that time comes, I'll root for him to be everything you hope he is.

I hear 'ya, Slaine, but here's what happens. Teams see guys and say, "Wow, those other teams don't see what this guy has to offer." Those teams then fall in love with players and believe that they have value above-and-beyond what the charts say.

I think the Steelers felt that way about Troy (rightfully so), and about Jarvis (yeah, not so much). So if the Steelers feel that way about Reid or Vander Esch or whoever, they will be willing to spend resources to get their guy.

Oh I understand why people end up getting infatuated. There's no one easier to sell to than a salesman and a football guy will see something that they particularly value in a guy and will then find reasons to justify that. It's natural but frustrating when you have the possibility to trade down and get two players that are pretty much equal in talent to the one guy that you would otherwise be getting.

When there is a significant difference in talent then sure you take the guy. I don't really get that from this draft except at the the top.

Brown and Hargrave were not first round picks. If people knew then what they know now, Brown certainly would be, but there is a reason he was picked in later rounds.

Without really knowing what’s behinds Evans low numbers he’s a gamble... regardless our problems against the run goes back to last year even when shaz was healthy. When we line up in that G A Y two man line teams run it down our throat. It’s not much better in our base defense. Don’t be surprised if Payne is on the board we don’t take him the defensive line has to play better and produce more if the defense is to get us where we need to be. Make no mistake chip kellys influence has been felt across the league, that being the notion of spreading the defense so you can run against. And of coarse the steeler coaching staff was caught flat footed drafting and scheming to simply stop the pass. The inside zone blocking with double teams just rips our defense up. We have a lot of work to do, shoring up the base defense with better inside line backing, better nose tackle play, better safety play is a step in the right diction and A good draft will help gooooooo steeeelers!
