THE WORST SUPER BOWL-WINNING DEFENSE

2006 Colts
12-4
360 points allowed

Our defense allowed 368 points against in 2014

In 2013 we allowed 370 points against.

Translation, we do not have the defense to win a superbowl. History shows you need some.

Heavy pressure is on the Steelers to draft good defensive players.

It's been over four years since Steelers won a playoff game. In the past three playoff games the Steelers are 0-3. A new Head Coach and GM is needed if nothing changes in 2015.

I'll reserve judgment until we actually know:

1. What type of defense we will have this year.
2. Who is playing on that defense and what positions they are playing.

Coach, just a quick question, if you don't mind me asking. Is there a specific reason you leave 4-5 line breaks between your sentences? Is that to help us slower folk with reading comprehension? Or is there some other reason for it? Thanks.

Superbowl???

hahahahahahaha

try making a playoff spot first and winning that first

hahahahahahahaha

Making the playoffs and winning a playoff game would be a huge accomplishment considering Tomlin's (and the team's) history on the west coast.

The greatest mistake this organization can make this off-season is to think our 11-5 record against a bad schedule somehow indicates we are "close" to making a serious run. Nothing could be further from the truth and we need considerable upgrades and trimming up the fat on this roster before we are solid and deep enough to last through December and into the playoffs playing good enough football.

If Tombert continues to only look 1 year ahead (if that) and continues to think short-term (patching holes year-to-year), then we are never going to make another serious run with Roethlisberger as our quarterback. And once he leaves, we aren't sniffing a championship unless we luck into another franchise QB again (and even then it's probably years and years away before we start discussing the possibility of that happening).

The swing from defensive to offensive talent on this team is pretty remarkable. We had a good but not great offense and now we have what I would call a potent offense and a limp noodle defense. We need impact players and the best way to do that is via the draft. Next year we have cap space to play with and could possibly go get a UFA if the FO doesn't mess with the cap situation for 16'. We can contend to win a Super Bowl with this team. That's not in question to me. But having a dominant shut down defense is not going to be the way we do that.

Could be the software I'm using? Took the info off the web, and it did not format well here.

Ok got it, I thought it was on purpose, never mind.

I agree, but think Colbert and Tomlin are average and part of the problem. We play down to the level of bad teams too often, and do not manage our cap well enough to use free agency to fill needs. The draft has been hit or miss. Lebeau was forced out, though I felt he did a good job with McCain, Williams, Spence, and Blake.... Guys who were forced to start or play a lot due to injuries. We might miss Dick more than we realize.

I see a cross roads season for both Tomlin and Colbert in 2015. Neither is signed beyond 2016. This is not an accident. I think Rooney is ready to judge. A bad season ( losing ) could trigger a change. Ben still has 3-4 good years left barring a bad injury. So a new head coach / GM can win with him in 2016 or beyond provided the defense is re-built.

The Steelers have not won a playoff game in four years. Five years would be tough.

I agree this could be a very bad season and it could lead to significant changes to the front office.

If our draft picks fail to contribute, if we lose early in the season (which could happen) and things really fall apart with that brutal schedule after the bye week it could end up much worse than I predict.

I still think Reothlisberger and the offense will carry us to at least an 8-8 record, but if he gets dinged up, misses a game here or there, this season could really start to unravel.

The defense should be much improved. Hell, it can't get any worse.

Here is my reason for optimism (is that allowed here)?

Heyward was much improved last year, & should continue to improve.
Tuitt in his second year and showed some flashes the latter part of the year.
McClendon back to full strength
Shazier back to full strength
Jarvis Jones back to full strength

Shamarko is a big ???, but Will Allen is there for security (we really didn't miss Troy much last year, so him being gone shouldn't hurt)
Mitchell can't suck as bad as he did last year.

Cortez Allen -- can he return to form? Need an upgrade, but Blake is there for security.
We really didn't miss Ike much last year, so him being gone shouldn't hurt. Gay is there.

We need CB and OLB help BADLY.

Tomorrow is the day!!!!!!

Who ride?

oicu8ad you forgot two things: Shade Tree McCullers and Golden Flash Archer both having a year under their belts and will begin their critical second season. I expect both will have increased roles and we'll finally see what these guys are capable of. :towel2:

Good point on both!!!!

Man, I'd hate to go into a street fight with some of you. It'd be lost before we even got sweated up.

Every team has weaknesses. But the Steelers have a pretty good offense. Other teams have to worry about them too, right? I think they will end up putting a solid defense out there. If it is just solid and they can get turnovers, they may not need to be great.

Stop worrying about the damn schedule. It could look totally different in September, let alone what it may look like in November.

the question was about the defense

try to pay attention

Are you thinking that Archer can play safety in the nickel or dime and cover the slot man or a TE? Or will he devote more time to getting them Gatorade while in sweats on sideline?

i have the same feeling , yes 8-8 at best .. no playoff and no depth on crucial positions

Yea, no ****. But football is played on offense and defense, right? My point was that the Steelers offense may be good enough to win some games in spite of the defense. That is happening quite a bit more in the NFL of today. Try to pay attention.

Our defense is awful and we just lost the best DC in NFL history, sorry that is not a recipe for winning playoff games. Plus our offense was injury free last year with career years for many players hard to imagine that happening again this year, a few injuries on offense and we are a 6-10 team at best with this years schedule and traveling .
What defensive player on our team would any team in the AFC North trade out for theirs?

Keep in mind that scoring averages league wide have gone up since the colts won in 2006.

2006 - avg/team was 322 pts
2014 - avg/team was 348 pts

So our D is about as far from avg as the Colts were in 2006

There's no tellin what kind of defensive production we'll have this year. It always changes with a change at DC. We could be much better w similar talent or much worse. It's up to Butler now.
