That rolls.

The league will adjust to mediocre RBs wanting big money. RBs are the most disposable position, because when drafted, they already have thousands of touches. They adjust easily to the game, better than any other position. Teams will just refill the RB stable every 3yrs, constant rotation of talent and let the players whose rookie contracts expire, walk.

I think the league, in general, will be more hesitant to give backs big #2 contracts. But, that being said, some RBs are clearly worth a big #2 contract, while many will not. Would you not give a big 2nd contract to the likes of AD, Emmitt, Bettis, LT, Sanders, Payton, Dickerson, Curtis Martin, Thurman Thomas, E James, Gore, Faulk, Marcus Allen?

Uh....Of all those names only Gore would be considered relevant at this time and he’s on his 4th + contract. All of those other backs played when the game wasn’t as pass first oriented. Not sure who AD is....

Chargers have 2 23 yr old backs behind him that were just as productive in 2018. I believe they would like him to play in 2019 and then walk.

And with very rare exceptions, running backs are the easiest skill position players to merge into an offense and take over as starter beginning his rookie season. Teams can therefore get production very close to what the expensive guy does but for rookie contract cost.

Further, running backs do not age as well as QB's, so signing a 27-year old RB to an expensive 5-year deal is nuts. Just draft a guy and have him play as well, very possibly better, for about 1/7th the cost.

Yea, right, as if ANY of those backs wouldn't be worthy of a 2nd big contract in that right here and now if they were 26 years old. Mental illness. And, I thought everyone knew who AD was: All Day Adrian Peterson.

Not nuts if it's the right back....You don't think Marshall Faulk was worth the Rams signing him? SUPER BOWL.

That was also before the cap limits on rookies. With the CURRENT set up of rookie contracts. Many of those you so eloquently listed to include AD... don't get a 2nd contract.

I think you might have hit your head. Tell me ANY of the above backs who didn't/wouldn't get a big 2nd contract. Name one.

Some guys buy a ticket and win the lottery. Not a good retirement strategy nonetheless.

Further, the Colts were not going to pay Faulk a ton of money, and traded him to the Rams, then drafted Edgerrin James to replace him at about 1/5th the cost. That turned out to be a pretty damn good move and supports my point that teams can get a replacement in the draft who produces very well, as well as the veteran, for a fraction the cost.

How odd to bring retired RBs into the convo.

Again.......the relevance of a 2nd contract in the current era wouldn’t apply to any of those RBs mentioned as none came into the league as the position is currently handled by GMs. There was no slotted rookie salary and as Gurley has shown the risk of a large contract at the position is a high risk. Bell’s shenanigans showed what the Steelers already knew about Bell’s value....when he said he would reset the RB market. Of all these productive backs in the league now, only Kamara and Zeke will probably get overpaid at the position, which Again.....has been devalued.

As for Mental Illness, you’ve shown you have some. Peterson is recognized pretty universally as AP. “All-day” would be for the Vikings fans and Fantasy folks.

As much as I understand why the Steelers let AB go and look forward to moving on without him, I think they set a bad precedent allowing him to get away with what he did. The league will be worse off in the long run and managing a roster and the salary cap will be that much more complicated.

I agree with this. The way the Steelers handled AB was horrible. They let him dictate his terms and even got more money for throwing a ***** fit. Yes, I know they wanted to move on but getting a 3rd round pick, taking a $21M cap hit and coddling AB with a trade is more than I could handle.

The new CBA will address most of this but be prepared for a strike season.

Salute the nation

Just curious, but how or what could have been done differently? If the guy checks out and becomes a detriment to the team and devalues himself as a trading commodity what then? He basically took all the cards out of the Steelers hands.
