Is it fair to say Villanueva is already better than Adams?

Why do we always want so bad to get rid of people? There's room on the roster for two backup OTs so why not be happy that we have an intriguing prospect in AV rather than making the leap to "Thank God we can now cut that waste of space Adams!"

Adams played decently last season. Isn't having more depth a good thing?

A break down of Villanueva pass blocking

Alejandro sounds like he will be a worth while keeper on the team. Imagine if he makes another big jump in ability by next season. The best five guys could be Beachum, Pouncey, DeCastro, Villanueva, Gilbert. That bunch could really be something special. Foster might be a second team player with Adams, Wallace and who ever the best of the rest is. If an injury happens there are three guys that can play tackle in the starting lineup and a 4th if you count Pouncey. Should be a very flexible group that would allow a good line to be on the field even if game time injuries and adjustments need to be made. Beachum is the real gem who has played all positions and could likely do well in all of them at this point as he has also gotten better every year.

He played LT well last night. Why move him to guard? I'd rather have Beachum, Foster, Pouncey, DeCastro, and AV. Move him to RT. Gilbert isn't that good and there is no reason to pay him even more money.

Gilbert could become trade bait if Villanueva keeps developing

Good stuff.

way too early for those thoughts to be dancing in ones head

I was not thinking of moving him but Beachum who has added much in the way of strength and whose size fits in that position well as well as his quickness. Not a knock on Beachum just AV has the better size for a tackle and both are working hard at their craft. If it works out we could have two very good players on the left side. As to Gilbert someone at camp saw lots of improvement in him so far as well and it sounds like he has been doing better than last year. Sounds like the munch effect is working.

Again one game does not make a trend but things are looking better for the offensive line as far as play on the field goes. Getting the five best onto the field would be great. In looking at what we have now if AV gets into the top 5 players I suspect the one that is the one to be number 6 would be Foster. The only reason I suggest Beachum be moved is he is the most able to play anywhere on the line and likely to be an asset where ever he is placed. The other players do not seem to have his ability to grasp and execute all the positions on the line.

Hell, I'm better than Adams. I might only weigh 185 but I can bench press 305.

I thought he played well enough to hang onto 'till I read stuff like this, then I begin to wonder if my lyin' eyes are trickin' me again.

Despite Collinsworth's praise,Villanueva just doesn't look like a starting NFL tackle to me. He has really ugly pass drops and heavy feet. In the run game he plays far too high and relies far too much on his size and weight to create movement than proper technique. There is a big gap between Adams and Villanueva and a canyon between him and Kelvin Beachum. He didn't get abused this game because Danielle Hunter is an even more inept pass rusher with no idea how to use the tools he has as a pass rusher. Putting it another way, Villanueva looks a lot like Adams did in his rookie year. Really like the guy but I don't see a career as anything more than a extra OT in heavy run packages. Good news is Villanueva did better than Whimpey and Palmer so there is a chance. Bad news is that the Steelers have no tackle depth.

I like the guy but based on his play against 2nd and 3rd string players I am not going to say he is better than a starter.

I'm not saying he is going to be great. It's just one game. I'm just saying if he becomes a good player in a year or so then I'd move Gilbert out. I don't put much stock in camp reports. I've been burned too many times by players like Frank "the Tank" Summers who was going to be the next Bus because of a few camps. Gilbert is not a good RT as the insertion of Adams as the 2nd RT can attest. I think Gilbert is an over paid stiff.

I did not think Gilbert was much either last year and if he looks the same to me this year I would have to agree with you. I thought Tunch and Wolf were talking about him and said he seemed to be much improved in both strength and technique over last year. Those guys although they are doing sports as a paid gig were former players and I thought good talent evaluators. However they very rarely have a negative comment about someone but often don't say anything if they can't find something upbeat to say, so your position could still be valid. I just put a bit more in what they say than say most of the other media types.

Rooney signs their paychecks, correct?

Well, he does just fine vs Jarvis Jones and some say he's a 1st string guy.

Harrison walked Villanueva back a few steps in team but big OT held his own.

Harrison practices and is running second team behind Uncle Jarvis. Villanueva should get all the test he needs going against James.

Finally Harrison is practicing, great. Teach some asskicking to the kids

They practice so little in pads that I don't put much stock in camp reports these days. I wonder what they said about him last year? I do like Tunch and Wolf but it's hard to be objective when your that close to the team. We'll see this year.
