Some actual thought and team knowledge seems to have gone into this one.

SB Nation: 2014 NFL Mock Draft: Derek Carr, Teddy Bridgewater & an unpredictable quarterback class. http://google.com/newsstand/s/CBIw_dP3rho

Almost a worst case scenario for the Steelers IMO. Though Moncrief or Tuitt in the 2nd is a nice choice to have...

I don't mind Dennard in Round 1 but would prefer Allen Robinson in Round 2 instead of Moncrief.

and I'd rather do that trade that they have Jacksonville doing with Philadelphia.

I would rather do the one they have with Cleveland, getting their 26th and 35th pick for the 15th.

Here is another thing, one of the things you have to notice about mock drafts this season, they are all over the place. I mean, sure, they get the top 4-5 players drafted in the top 10, but after that, it is a crap shoot. It tells me that the gaps between players is tighter. I think there is a pretty decent drop from those blue-chip guys at the top but then once you get into that second group, it flattens out pretty well and does not drop as quickly. The variety in picks comes more from personal preference than it does from difference in talent.

With that said, it makes it MUCH more difficult to predict who goes when and who is "sliding" or "rising". Why? Because it is not as much talent setting the board, more preference. So, a player like Aaron Donald, who fits certain schemes, may be top 10 to half the teams, may only be mid-to-late to the other half. You can see that in a lot of the mocks.

Of course, I would hope that NFL teams have honed in closer than draftniks.

Just to show how ****** up I am, a couple weeks ago I had a dream (nightmare?) and all the teams were taking either really bad guys (like in the 250th ranked dregs) or guys I've never of.

It freaked me out.

I think Clowney did go #1 overall, then St. Louis drafted a guy I never heard of and Cleveland drafted a guy I never heard of and Jacksonville drafted some no-name guy and all my friends were looking at me and asking me who these guys were....

That's when I woke up.

I thought I was ****** up or really old dreaming about catching trout instead of sex. I don't feel so bad now.

1. Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
May not be as refined as Dennard, but has higher upside and the ability to actually be a playmaker at cornerback. Knowing how the Steelers run their defense, they'd probably take Dennard. Also would be tempted with Ealy.

2. Stephon Tuitt, DE, Notre Dame
Not only do the Steelers need a DE, but I think Tuitt has potential to be a better DE for the Steelers than Robinson would bring as a receiver. Would look to WR in the third.

With all the QBs falling it doesn't push the other positions down and we end up with that Timmons draft where everything that could have gone wrong did (IMO). Willis, Carriker and Revis all went before us and we ended up with an "average" player for the 15th overall pick. I like Timmons a lot but at 15 you want a difference maker. Willis and Revis have been difference makers even if Carriker hasn't been.

I see that in this draft too and really hope that we can trade down with some team that has a hard on for a QB as we could get Fuller +A N Other (Hageman/Nix/WR) for Dennard/Gilbert both of whom have made their name as man to man in your face guys and not zone corners for a DLB D. That would then leave us clear to take BPA after addressing key need areas early.

I can hope.

Trade back with Cleveland;
Rd 1- Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
Rd 2a- Stephon Tuitt, DE, Notre Dame
Rd 2b- Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt

I could definitely live with GMC's draft, though I like Montcrief better than Matthews.

a cb, then Tuitt would be great. If we can trade down and get a wr in rd 2, it would be awesome.

I was reading something today from Mel Kiper where he was discussing the depth of the draft. He said there are 7 gems in this draft, they are Clowney, Mack, Watkins, Evans, Matthews, Robinson, and Lewan.

The only Pro Day I have seen Munchak specifically mentioned was Michigan, he visited Lewan. If I am not mistaken, all three (Colbert, Tomlin, and Munchak) had dinner with Lewan. Have not visited with him and a few years ago, that would have meant more, but they have been much less likely to visit some guys than in the past.

If Lewan did not have the off-the-field/character issues, he would likely find his way into the top 10 picks. I seriously doubt they pass on him at 15 and doubt he makes it past the Dolphins at 19. In fact, I think his landing spot is likely the Giants at 12, but if he makes it past them, he has to be one of the higher priority players for the Steelers.

Yep i Agree TMC.

In the four seasons after Willis was drafted the Niners went 5-11, 7-9, 8-8, and 6-10. What difference did Willis make?

That's how you are going to judge a player? The Steelers went 8-7, 5-11, 9-7,9-7, 7-9 after they drafted Woodson. What difference did he make?

Who knows? Would you have taken him over Timmons though?

Sure I would, but that's not what you implied. You implied that Willis was a difference maker while Timmons wasn't. Niners went nowhere with Willis until they got more playmakers and a competent head coach. By your own example he wasn't a difference maker.

I equate the term "difference maker" with wins. Niners didn't win any games before Willis and they didn't win any after him. Was he still a great player? Sure. But how can you say Willis was a difference Maker and Timmons wasn't when the Niners were no better in the win column with him on the team?
