. I think we were at 75 percent in sub-package defense last year. Those guys are seeing the field more than your base-package guys. ... Maybe a kid that we wouldn’t look at in the past as a 4-3 end, now we can because he’ll be a sub-package rusher, which is on the field three-quarters of the time.

So if say

# A DE gets more playing time - (as in Heyward's snap count being high)

# A slot CB gets more playing time ( as was noted Boykin was brought in and Golson drafted)

I know BPA is the general way of thinking and should be

but if all things are even don't be surprised to see a CB and DE selected early................

What I read out of that is we are now semi-officially a 4/3 defense and I also read that the way we pick OLBers will also need to be adjusted to put more emphasis on the hand down in the dirt hard rush guy that typically comes from a quick DE..

I hafta giggle...member when Tomlin came here and let LeBeau stay and his 3/4 stayed intact. The pundits all predicted he would go with his old 4/3 Tampa -2 and he said no, we'll go with this. It took awhile but it looks like he finally made it LOL.

They have been doing all of this subbing out of necessity. Why would you want to do that? I'd rather have a base, good defense that can handle most situations. Subbing mediocre for mediocre does not make a great or even good defense.

You can't play base when teams are trotting out 3WR sets regularly..

Nickel is the new base, you have to account 3 CBs as starters and if we draft another force of nature DLine player I'm willing to see a 6 men front of 3 Dlinemen and 3 LBs , shazier, dupree and timmons

Trumaine Johnson
Ross Cockrell
Branden Boykin

rotating with Cockrell will be Will Gay

There you are talking about three fa cbs on the team, that just won't happen

Its just too many 3 to 4 wideout sets. Mlbs are just safeties these days. There is no reason to have a nose tackle when no one has a true run first offense anymore. Soon its just going to be all nickle and dime all the time

Several ways to do it both have a basis is steeler football. The old steeler defense was the basis of the Tampa 2. Dungy who brought that defense to Tampa learned as a player in Pittsburgh but the defense he coordinated with Pittsburgh was a 3-4 with a cover three and four with two linebackers dropping into zone rushing a fast linebacker named mike merrieweather. That defense handed the 49ers they're only loss in 1984. There is nothing new under the sun and you can bet when it comes to defense the book was written or improved apron in western pa.

not sure the will bring in a johnson it might be too stiff of a price, or get boykin in the slot

but gay will be back and you already have **** in play

If they normally have 3 WR's, then that is your base. We went from 4 d-linemen back in the day to 3 and then to 2 for the majority of this past season. I still just don't see 2 d-linemen working. Maybe it will but I don't think we or any team is built to run with 2 d-linemen. I haven't seen other teams do it. That is why I think it was just us trying to cover our deficiencies rather than having it as our base/best defense.
