Initial Thoughts on Texan Game

D
If I was Pat I wound privately ask to be traded. If I was KC, I would be on that phone making a deal for him.
41 receptions on 54 targets this season . A competent QB with a competent coach would double that instantly. I think he could be that 90-110 receptions guy.

Roman Wilson. 12 receptions on 21 targets. In a year we desperately needed a WR to step up. Its crazy that he didn’t get more playing time.

Kaleb Johnson 28 rushes for 69 yards.

Jonnu Smith. 38 receptions on 54 targets. They never seemed to be on the same page all season. While I think most disagree with me,I think he was totally misused this season. He was never going to be a 1-3 yard then get yards after catch guy. It was a ******* joke. He should have been the quick hitting 10-15 yards after catch guy lining up everywhere. There’s no doubt they will release him.

In a season where once again our Offense was inept, inconsistent and needed a spark,I just don’t understand why we didn’t give these guys more opportunities.

I hated the hire of Arthur Smith when it happened and nothing this season has changed my mind. His whole resume was because he had a 2000 yard rusher with the Titans. Atlanta fans rejoiced when he got fired.

DK Sports is reporting that Freiermuth and another unnamed defensive player were visibly pissed in the locker room about Freiermuth's lack of targets in the game.

He might have played his last game as a Steeler, as it seems they're committed to Washington as the TE1.

I'm on the fence regarding Arthur Smith. The Steelers were average to slightly above in points and yards per play this year. That with a 42 year old QB, one good WR and an inconsistent OL.

There are reasons why Smith keeps getting interests for HC jobs.

There were definitely issues with the scheme, but one has to wonder how much of that is due to meddling from Tomlin, considering we saw much of the same **** from Randy Fichtner and Matt Canada.

The middle of the field phobia in the passing game is a constant theme, and I think Freiermuth has been more a victim of that than anybody.

After TK drop down we went. Texans had our number, sad to say. Some of the play calls when called was a big question. Why they have Smith on the field at all is something else. Why is it Texans on third down run past line to gain not Steelers throw underneath try to make three guys miss tackle. You could go on and on just reminded me of the Cleveland game. No push nothing aggressive on offense, then the sky fell in Rogers, was done

I think Washington as a TE1 would be a mistake. Don’t get me wrong…. I love the guy,but I don’t think he should be the top targeted pass catcher. He’s too valuable in the block department, and I also don’t think his knees would hold up. My type of offense would have a TE targeted at minimum 100 times.

I don't necessarily disagree. I'm just conveying how the Steelers are probably viewing it.

When all three TE were healthy, Washington was getting the most playing time by a mile.

The writing is on the wall, so to speak, where Freiermuth is likely to be traded and Washington extended

Just how I see it.

I do giveTomlin and Smith credit for playing Washington over Freiermuth in the sense of putting contracts and money aside and playing who they feel gave them the best chance to win.

Washington is a dominant blocker and might have more upside as receiver than we realize.

However, when Washington is out and they still refuse to utilize Freiermuth, it's a problem.

We might have another Tomlin hostage situation on our hands and those tend to end only one way.

Washington will be a short lived career here due to injury. You’re right in that he won’t hold up to the punishment given and taken.

On a normal offense, Friermuth would be a number 1 and targeted consistently (4-8 per game)

Salute the nation

Amanda is hot as ****. However, people have seasons tickets. They are not giving them up. So they are at the game. That doesn't mean they believe in the team and why should they. Its been groundhog day plus or minus a wildcard beat down for a decade. A decade.

The answer is you use both Muth and Washington

Her sis is hotter. 😉

Again, I don't really disagree, but that is probably not going to happen, assuming Tomlin remains coach.

He loves one and not the other and that's just how it's going to be.

Look at home many snaps per game Freiermuth was getting compared to Washington.

Freiermuth is getting the Kevin Dotson treatment, but in different ways, and like with Dotson, I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes an allpro caliber player with a coach that knows what to do with him.

Agree, they put jonnu on the field with Washington instead of muth

I didn't read everything as I just got back to my computer since before the game. I posted in the other thread about the refs needing an FU as always. They refused to call a penalty on the numerous head shots Rodgers took, with the worst of them on the first pick-six that basically ended the game at 17-6.

The drop by Metcalf was also huge. That puts us in scoring territory, and instead, we punt, and the Texans went 92 yards for their score. Huge play.

However, Rodgers seemed to be throwing a hissy fit after that as he seemed to have put DK in his doghouse and wouldn't throw to him again until the 4th quarter. And, DK was open several times with one-on-one coverage. Rodgers would check down to a short throw every time, even with no pressure.

As far as the Steelers go.... We know Rooney won't fire Tomlin. The only possible firing is Austin as the DC is always the scapegoat for Tomlin's failings on his defenses, as everyone knows by now that Tomlin runs the D.

I do not bring back Rodgers just to maybe sneak into the playoffs again and get bounced in the 1st round. Get Howard in as the starter or a rookie if they get to draft someone high that outduels Howard in a true competition in the preseason. If they don't draft a QB (which I highly doubt), then Howard is QB1 heading into camp. Enough already, and retool this team. They have some good pieces, but too many old guys. The proper coaches should be able to get the many young guys they have to play much better. There will be some bumps in the road, but they need to start hiring, coaching, and playing the young guys. Other teams do it with great success.

I agree with the Muuth talk as he should be TE1 and Washington should be TE2. Jonnu was mostly useless this season and a big disappointment, especially because they refused to consistently throw to their best receiving TE in Muuth. Washington and Muuth should be on the field the most with Jonnu (if he's still on the team) as the TE3. Losing Washington was a big, big deal. He would have been a HUGE help in the Texans game in their jumbo package (not sure if they even used it in this game, but I wasn't really looking.

Arthur Smith's "bordering on gay" love for Jonnu spanning between the Titans, Falcons and now Steelers is another issue in itself.

Bringing in Jonnu made little sense over the summer and after seeing it in action for 18 games, honestly makes even less now.

I was hoping he could be some sort of hybrid WR boy was I wrong… His play was overall underwhelming..

I’m so done with the Mikey T. era and ready for this organization to move on.
The guy is a nine, ten win season coach at this point and that’s it. That may get you in the playoffs and it may not, but when you do get in, you simply cannot compete.
Art needs to revaluate the entire situation and decide where he wants this organization to go.
I cannot believe he is satisfied with mere mediocrity and would want a fresh restart for this franchise.
Nothing will change if Tomlin stays in Pittsburgh. It will be business as usual with him running the show and producing more mediocre results.

It's almost like they thought Jonnu would be able to compensate for the lack of a WR2, but it just doesn't work that way.

You can only play so many TEs.

All it did was create a mess at the position that they were never able to fully sort out.

And also the Steelers make decisions on Co-ordinators and position coaches and soon. With at least 8 new head coaches to be appointed, there will probably be a run on co-ordinators and position coaches as newly appointed head coaches make changes.
Good point.

It's just wishful thinking for me -- I'm agnostic, anyway. I know deep down, though, that nothing is going to change until Mike Tomlin says so. That's the truly sad part.

Rushing four most of the night and it looked far more disruptive than when we rush 5-6

An indictment on the entire LOS and every coach on the team for not adjusting

I get BJ and Washington were out, do the coaches understand that? Cook uncorked an awful game, Isaac was abysmal, Troy was pretty damn awful.
Frazier and McCormick were harder to grade because the QB was already being assaulted before they were 1 second into their blocking

I can not believe they spent the week preparing when you see that level of 💩 product

But sadly, totally expected every bit of it
I don't think cook was terrible the one play he pancaked his guy and was laying on top of him and Rodgers tripped over them. Cook was not stellar but I would say he was average. Frazier seemed ok and not really sure about McCormick. Issac and Troy were certainly awful.

The 2027 option could make things interesting, as one would assume it was agreed to in Tomlin's contract for a reason.

Hard to see him going into next season with no financial commitment beyond that.

It's not good business for either side, considering Tomlin has other options.
The only realistic hope for change is if MT decides to take a higher-paying TV gig. If Fox is paying Tom Brady $37.5 million, I guess it's reasonable to assume that Tomlin could get at least half of that. Which is more than he makes now, with a whole lot less stress.

Without much research, I think we need to go DL and then WR with our 1st 2 picks. I can also see an OL pick in the 1st three rounds. With Rodgers getting abused last night, I still think 4 OL are probably still on the roster with Seumolo not being brought back unless he takes a major pay cut, and definitely some competition for him.

If they find a QB they love, they will have to move up and get him unless they plan to reach for a QB not worth a 1st round pick. Heck, I'd even trade up a few spots for a very top DL or even WR if one is there.

Reminds me of a made up lyric I just thought of

Wanna hear it here it go;

I have no doubt within this rhyme
You are threatening me with
A damn good
timeeee

I would sing and danceeee
With this
circumstanceee
Would call for a chest thump
In this
instanceeee

Yep, the problem is Bruce Arians Todd Haley Randy Fichtner Matt Canada Arthur Smith. Get rid of that guy and watch out!!

This is insanity and you come off as delusional, quite frankly. Firstly, with Tomlin as the coach this team is only “taking off” to another Tomlinship where they get completely embarrassed in the playoffs YET AGAIN. And that’s the BEST case scenario.

Secondly, this supposed “elite” defensive line was completely manhandled by the Texans. Go rewatch the first half in particular. They were blown off the line repeatedly. The Texans could’ve and should’ve run every play and instead of the final score being 30-6 it would’ve been 44-0 or something. I could go on and on.

Honestly, fans like yourself are why Tomlin is still here, or at least part of the reason. You are Charlie Brown. Tomlin and the Steelers are Lucy. But keep trying to kick that football man.

I do think Tomlin should be fired. I’ve said so. I’m mainly talking about the roster and that is on the rise. These 2 off seasons under Kahn have been great. I’m expecting more good moves.

Nick Siriani is an idiot but the Eagles have the best roster in the game. A bad coach can win with a stacked roster and the Steelers roster building has been excellent the past 2 years. That’s the good news.

Players do get better. Harmon and Black were rookies and Harmon missed a bunch of time. Harmon outplayed the DT the browns took at pick 5. They added Herbid and Sawyer as quality depth guys in the front 7. Benton is a good player if they can get him away from nose. If they draft a good nose type DT then yes, this DL is in great shape.

I think this will be a DB draft for the Steelers.

Steelers may be able to trade Broderick Jones. Look at what Dan Moore got paid. Teams are desperate for OT. Steelers have Cook and Anderson.

Not sure how much the roster is rising.

They do have some pieces but they arguably need a WR, maybe two of them. A G, CB, DE, FS, QB…

Then you need coaches to develop them.

I do like you like what Khan has done so far.
