In search of the real Mike Tomlin

But then, the assessment that Tomlin is a players’ coach is not necessarily an outside one. It’s just that the phrase has a different currency in the locker room than it does in the offices upstairs. In the locker room, Tomlin is considered a players’ coach by one player after another not because he’s easygoing but rather because he’s honest. Indeed, what’s startling about talking to the men who play for the Steelers is the unanimity of opinion about the man who is their coach. Listen to cornerback Joe Haden and you’ve essentially listened to them all, right down to the vocabulary:

“The thing about Coach T is that he’s very, very black-and-white. He’s very, very straightforward. He lets you know exactly where you stand. And he lets you know where you stand in front of your peers if you’re not holding down what you’re supposed to be holding down. If I’m doing it, I’m gold. If I’m not, I either got to pick my stuff up or Coach T is going to tell me he’s going shopping.”

“There are no surprises and no excuses,” says running back Le’Veon Bell. “If there are two guys battling for one helmet, Coach T will let everybody know. ‘Hey y’all, these are two guys battling for one helmet. I’m going to watch them in practice today. I’m going to watch them in practice all week, and we’re going to see who gets this helmet.’ And everybody knows.”

I think he is a very good man, I think in many respects he is a very good coach. I'm pretty sure you could say the exact same things about a guy like Marvin Lewis. The thing is that coaches are measured by championships. He has every possible piece on offense and there has been a ton of investment on defense. And yet they have come up short the last two seasons when they seemingly had everything they needed. I'm sorry, but that says something. And then for all the accountability he continues to have a team that seems to shoot itself in the foot mentally and in the media.,
 
from week 16- until season end twitter should be limited any player that engages in remarks that indicate see you in ex the playoffs player should be fined, even if we are 15-1, we gave Jacksonville to much bulliten material to get them amped when they stepped on the field both bell and mitchell were complete trolls just talking and not focusing on task at hand.
 
No question the man has great character. Although I do question his decision making.

Setting expectations are something every head coach does. When will Tomlin stop pointing fingers and accept that he was part of a loss? That has not happened yet...

If we had a better head coach, we would be better than 3-6 in our last nine playoff games.

While I am glad Haley is gone, he under achieved in the red zone and had too many boneheaded calls for years, and let's not forget who hired him.

Winning another championship or two cures all speculation. That's the bottom line. We obviously can't do it with offense alone. Go beat the jags&pats***** this year with a thump and bad teams you should thump anyway. Then go undefeated in the playoffs and everyone will love you.

If you want everyone to hold hands and proclaim the greatness of Coach T it isnt going to happen. This is a place of discussion. Not everyone agrees. I personally think he is good not great. He isnt on the hotseat but I think it is getting warmer. The Rooneys are starting to lose patience as are many of the fans. If he doesn't win a championship with Ben I believe they will be looking for a new HC shortly there after.

lmao .. I've never said I did want everyone to proclaim the greatness of HCMT. Hell, I've had issues with him myself. It is funny to me that some folks on here want EVERYONE to treat a certain QB with kid gloves though and many of those folks are the same folks who are constantly on Tomlin's ***. I say if Ben doesn't throw a few boneheaded INTs, we would have had a better chance last year. If Mitchell doesn't **** the bed and fall apart, we would have had a better chance last year. If Shazier doesn't get hurt we would have had a better chance last year. AND, if Tomlin had coached better situationally, we would have had a better chance last year.
Now, as for this being a place of discussion, I can see that in all of the above situations. However, it seems that some folks who are tough on everything else go all snowflake when it's time for certain players to take their share of the blame. Tomlin can coach as well and as hard as he wants to ... players still have to play and execute. In my opinion, Tomlin needs to coach better and some of our "veteran" leaders need to lead by example (i.e. prepare, execute and play better)
As far as the Rooney's losing patience .... yeah, I haven't seen any indication of that.

Well, one of those season endings was against a cheating sack of **** team.

I don't have a link and will gladly say it is more of a feeling. However, the way they Art weighed in on the handling of Harrison and some displeasure with the defense I would say there is truth there. Turnover of some coaches too. How long would you be patient?

I'm tough on players all the time. Hell I'm calling out Ben on this Rudolph bullshit. But the players didn't call 38 toss on 4th down last year in the playoffs. Players face an opponent when they fail its an open system. There are good players on the other side. Coaching errors on the other side happen within yourself. Tomlin is a good coach. BUT, The team seems to fall short against some ****** opponents, they lack a lot of discipline at times. Sometimes he can't handle some of the personalities overly well. The head coach bears some responsibility.

Doesn't make it less true. The league swept the **** under the carpet. It is what it is. I know they cheated, you know they cheated, most of the NFL that doesn't have blinders on knows they cheated. And sure they didn't do the right thing and strip them of the championships that was linked to the cheating. That is on the NFL.

That is their mark of fail.

Doesn't mean the fans have to sweep it under the carpet either.

He weighs in on things every year..been doing that since forever. Haley = Ben. Not sure what lake issue was whether it was family or coaching. Munn wanted to retire and mitchell has been was getting up there in age
 
I dont think they cheated two years ago in the playoffs. Im not even sure if they cheated in the Tomlin era.

For how many incidents they have been linked to, what makes you so sure they ever stopped?

When they were caught they were sloppy. Wouldn't be hard to tweak what they were doing, to present day.

I think they see the advantages of it, and know Goodell will try to cover it up.

It is like saying a master burglar that escapes punishment and jail time for probation. Is going to all of a sudden be a upstanding citizen.

Hand him the keys to your house and see how that works out.

I am a firm believer in stripes don't change without significant result.
