I want your honest opinion....why defer the opening kickoff on the road?

For the life of me I just don't get why the Steelers chose to defer the opening kickoff in today's game vs the Jets. A bad team needs smacked right in the friggin mouth. Our offense has been on fire, why not set the tone for the game right out of the gate? Instead they kick it, put it in the hands of a defense that is missing playmakers, and the Jets go on an 8 minute drive that clearly gave them momentum. Am I crazy??
 
yeah I have always hated that but not the reason the team is losing


these coaches at times are dumb as a box of rocks

Makes no sense at all. Do exactly opposite of what could win you the game.
 
What really makes no sense we start a game like we are still in the Hotel. Talk about slow starts, we dug a hole today and we need a TD to get in this.
 
Does it matter? Defense can't make stops on opening drives and the offense always seems to take time to warm up. Lose-lose either way.

My honest opinion is you start the stupidest threads every game day. WTF does it matter who has the ball to start?
 
Because everybody does it? It's not like our offense was the best part of the team coming in or anything. It wouldn't have mattered, the coaches and players were all *** this week.
 
You want to get off to an early lead against this team. Best to put the defense on the field and try to get a turnover.
 
You always defer to get the extra possession in the second half. The board went ape **** the last time we selected possession on the road because Ben wanted the ball.

Compared to an extra possession in the first half? I guess I dont understand that logic....either way, it didnt matter. I fully expected the Steelers to **** the bed today against a 1-8 football team and they did.

It gives the offense more time to get into the MD 20/20 we snuck onto the field.

Yes, agree. Always defer, IMO.
 
You asked for an honest answer and I will give you some. Some are better than others.....

1. When you get the ball to start the second half, you are giving yourself the opportunity to posses the ball twice in a row.
2. They game has already begun to develop, and the score/gameplan/matchups are now better known quantities and it allows you the opportunity to dictate the start of the secord half.
3. (This shouldn't have been the case today, but in many places this is true) When on the road, and you get the ball in the second half, a large number of the home fan base is still waiting for the restroom/beer/hot dogs etc. Noise is less of a factor and its an advantage the road team coming out to start the half.
 
I dont have a problem deferring. I think getting the ball in second half first is better. The Jets offense is horrible and our D failed miserably.
 
anyone note how they were trying to use Dri Archer?
seemed every time he was out there he was running back and to the opposite side of the flow of the return. had to absolutely be by design.
 
I like deferring when on the road. The home crowd is always at its peak at the start of a game - most people are in their seats and yelling. This makes it hard on offense. However, at the start of the 3rd, many folks have yet to make it back from the bathroom and concessions. In addition, avoiding the possibility of the other team scoring at the end of the half and at the start of the 2nd half is important.

When I was coaching, I would always call that swing points... If you can control the clock and score at the end of the first half and then produce some points out of halftime, you can firmly place momentum on your side.
 
It didn't make sense to me either considering that we have the #22 run defense and the Jets have the #3 run offense and can play keep-away, which they did.
