Tomlin is an overrated coach who won a super bowl with Bill Cowher's players. Once those players aged or retired, we see what we have.
A coach who loses too many games to inferior teams, .500 or below.
A coach who is rather poor at clock management and time outs.
A coach who often goes for it when he should have kicked it and kicks it when he should have gone for it...a bad gambler...
A coach who says some rather poor things to the media, and has his players getting into too much trouble off the field. This may not entirely be his fault, but I feel the head coach is a factor as some head coaches have far less police blotter issues and NFL suspensions.
And most importantly a coach who has not won a playoff game since January 23, 2010! We are approaching 2016.
With our talent and a franchise QB still in his prime, I find this unacceptable. I wish the Steelers would have waited until the end of the season to decide whether or not to extend Tomlin.
Things at work have slowed down after this mornings number's, so let me counter (bear with me):
Cowher's players argument- Who care's if Cowher or Donahue or Rooney (who selected Big Ben) select a player. Players aren't self coached or operate on auto pilot. If this were the case, the 2005 powerhouse team would have finished much better than 8-8 in 2006. Look at the 49er's before Harbaugh- all the high pick talent in the world and all they needed was a coach to spark the flame.
Losses to inferior teams: He has a record >0.700% with teams with a losing record. The only inferior team we lost to this year was the result of terrible kicker and having to start our 3rd string QB
Timeouts/Time Management: I believe every fanbase has beef with their coach regarding these. Its like low hanging fruit if you dont like your coach. Funny thing is, half the time these decisions are way too 'situational' that we may not have all the information to intelligently argue what to do.
A bad gambler: I believe we have the highest rate of 2pt attempts and conversions in the NFL. Lets also not forget that gamble in SD- How'd that work out?
Playoff win: Cant argue this. But its a false equivalence for what constitutes a good coach. Sexy Rexy, Andy Reid, and John Fox have tons of playoff wins with nothing to show for it. The proper question is: Are the Steeler's improving, are the players responding to the coach, and can they compete for the SB? After a brief roster overhaul for two years (8-8 aint a bad down year), I would say that most would agree we have improved significantly .
The talent: No credit for the talent that you even mention? You want to credit Cowher for Cowher's players, but wont do the same for:
An All Pro WR on one side, and a stud on the other
An all Pro RB, and a stud backup
An OLine with Pro Bowl talent
You dont think this talent is the reason we have seen Ben's level play elevate in the past several years?
