I would have preferred younger HC with younger more innovative connections. That said I much prefer that McCarthy is responsible for the offense and Graham is responsible for the defense. No hiding. I rather liked what Graham had to say today about being solid on first down and being more chess on second and third and long. You have to be prepared to risk it. Not just play it in front of you and wait for mistakes. I just felt besides Munchak at oline no group ever improved throughout the season from coaching. Only talent influx in off season.

I agree with you. Over more then the last decade, I didn't like who Tomlin was hiring as his assistant coaches. We watched him hire guys who were unqualified for their positions and subsequently and because of that , we've seen a team that is short on technique in a lot of different ways and discipline. It took some research for me to find that Tomlin hired these assistant coaches and weak offensive coordinators because he didn't want anyone that could show him up and threaten his position on the team. I too didn't agree with the McCarthy hire. I felt there were better coiches. But there are three things Mike McCarthy has done well regardless of what team he coached:

1. He hires good assistant coaches
2. He grooms QB,s well
3. He installs a potent offense.

And all three of those things are areas we are lacking in greatly. So if McCarthy does that here, I think we'll be okay. And considering his age, I think McCarthy will do what he does and he'll be gone in 3-4 years max. I don't see him doing all 5 years of his contract. But that also will give us time to get a young successor to him for the long haul. I think we'll be okay.

Good summary. I don't mind having a potentially short-term coach either. McCarthy either finds and develops a QB and has this team in contention within 4 years or he doesn't and the Steelers can move on.

Also add in that MM coaching time line will coincide with Art 2 stepping down. At that time Dan will be brought in and he can bring in his coaching hire (young prosperous inundation minded) coach.

As we look for Lombardi 8 after McCarthy gets 7.

Yep. I think Art wanted one last kick at the can and with a subpar assistant coach staff, they didnt want a guy with limited staffbuilding experience on top of having a learning curve at HC..
