Been saying it since Dick L was let go.

No time to watch that video, but we lost to both ****** Broncos and Raiders teams with LeBeau as DC was well. It was lunacy to expect anything different from a guy who learned the craft under him. The team should've gone outside the organization for a new DC after LeBeau was let go.

Lebeau was great. But his last years were horrible too. Whether he was calling on Tomlin's marching orders or the talent didn't match what DL wanted to do. I'll tell you one thing. Watch the Ravens. They crowd the LOS with 7 and 8 a lot. You dont know where they are coming from. They are not a good team either, but they are playing without a qb. That is what the Steeleds should do and to my eye were doing when they were playing well. If you dont create indecision in an NFL qb ut really doesn't matter who he is. He will hurt you.

We are not running LeBeau's defense any longer, I don't believe that this is even Butler's defense. This is a morph of Tomlin's Tampa-2 and there is a reason the Tampa-2 has been exposed forever. We NEVER ran that dumb *** 2DL formation under LeBeau, with Butler being a LeBeau disciple, I find it hard to believe he created that formation/scheme. The more Tomlin has put his seal on this defense, the worse it has gotten.

Once again, I saw at least one play where they used a 3rd down lineman. It made me happy.

2 Down Linemen, regularly asking LBs to cover wideouts and extraordinarily athletic TEs, and not from a zone-blitz perspective where there's a "surprise" about who's covering the player, no- they go and line it up that way.

Any QB with an OUNCE of sense is going to throw to a wideout or athletic TE when they see a linebacker lined up. Particularly when the TE goes out wide and one of our f'n linebackers stumbles over to cover him in a CB position.

(That was a 30 yard gain, for those of you who blacked out.)

I don't know WTF Butler and Tomlin think this defensive scheme is good for. I really don't.

That was the very first series they had.Carr seen it,and changed the play to Falcon,Falcon,Falcon. and then lob the ball down the sideline. if I could see it, how the hell could the safety not see it. he should have made a bee line right over there to either break it up or intercept it.

I believe what this guy is saying, nay, I've been saying it for years, swollen headed arrogance comes down from the top

These Steelers stink, showing ignorance with arrogance

It can be argued that arrogance simply cost the Steelers this game. They arrogantly believed they could thrive this season without Le’Veon Bell, one of the best running backs in the NFL, and were ill-prepared to deal with an injury to James Conner. They arrogantly believed they could overcome Conner’s sprained ankle and beat the Raiders with an unproven rookie in Jaylen Samuels and an ineffective Stevan Ridley, who combined for 32 rushing yards on 16 carries.

The Steelers arrogantly believed they could beat the Raiders without Ben Roethlisberger in the second half, the only logical explanation for Tomlin leaving Josh Dobbs in the game after Big Ben returned to the sidelines from a rib injury and stood idle for two series.

The Steelers arrogantly believed they could stop Derek Carr, even as he completed 25 of 34 passes for 322 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, even after Mike Hilton and Sean Davis proved that the Steelers can’t even pick off passes that hit them in the hands.

The Steelers arrogantly believed they could win another close game, despite the tie at Cleveland and the five-point loss to the Chiefs and the seven-point loss at Denver and the three-point loss to the Chargers.

The Steelers arrogantly believe that their repeated shortcomings are the result of correctable mistakes instead of one that All-Pro right guard David DeCastro said has been sleepwalking.

That the Steelers are showing ignorance to their arrogance is their greatest shortcoming in a season of them. This is a team that believes redemption is coming but doesn’t appear prepared, looking less like a playoff team and more like a bottom feeder that continues to come up short in games that had no business being so close.

His last year's are when Tomlin supposedly started getting involved and we started playing a ton of zone. The DL ends up in Tennessee where they run more man than anyone else.
We could have any DC here, but it won't matter if Tomlin is involving himself

DL is one of the most innovative and disciplined DC in the history of the game. Tomlin wanted to bring his Tampa 2 defense with him and incorporate it with the 3-4 defense. Why I have absolutefuckingly no idea. But That's what Tomlin wanted. He wanted DL gone and he wanted to run his defense. He got what he wanted.

Our secondary is too Effin stupid. That’s the problem

Yep and now another DC here is going to lose his job because of it. Maybe Butler would've been a **** DC, but this defense does not look like a DL defense at all

The zone-blitz often created situations where a linebacker or even a lineman was covering a receiver off the line of scrimmage. That happened all the time. However, the KEY is that the opposing team never knew WHO was going to be covering a given player at the snap of the ball. One time it might be a safety, one time it may be a linebacker, the next it could be a defensive lineman jumping out into the middle of the field.

What we have now is linebackers purposefully lining up (often on the the wrong shoulder) of a wideout or receiving TE. A QB can key on that and make a decision to exploit the mismatch pre-snap.

The "Falcon" play yesterday was a perfect example. Fort ambled out to Cook, Carr saw it and he was going there ALL THE WAY. 30 yards. Easy throw. We'd take it all day.

I keep waiting for other coaches to line up their LBs on Brown. It seems the league owes us a few.

Asking the linebackers to cover receivers....double down on stupid.

If there a fix to the defense, I suggest this. Simply attack. Play more man. Yes we will get burned. We will also create more turnovers.

Just to add to Wig astute observation. There are always LBs going to be covering RBs, WRs, and TEs. However they shouldn't be on the other teams #1 WR. They should be some "smoke and mirrors" involved so that the QB doesn't know who is guarding who. Walking a LB in space to cover a WR is ignorant and defeats the purpose. That's why Harrison TD in the SB was so great. He saw the play and read it. He then drops off the LOS into the passing lane. He didn't walk out on the guy. It's ******* kindergarten ****.

We don't really confuse the offense much at all and that is squarely on coaching and scheme. I conclude we cant coach and nor do we have any confidence in our Dbs except Haden and none of them can catch the ball anyways.

I watched every play of KC/Balt yesterday Baltimore's defense - now there is coaching, confusion and scheme
Yeah the Ravens lost but largely had the gunslinger Mahomes running for his life and it took a miracle and amazing play on 4th down by Mahomes near the end of regulation for the Chiefs to get to OT

Not only that, but the Ravens made the Chiefs work their *** off every possession, while we let the Raiders go down like it's nothing on the opening drive, then same in the 4th

Our D sucks and our D coaches, including Tomlin, suck! We continue to use LB's to cover WR's. There is just no excuse for that. Other teams have caught onto it and have been exploiting it over the past few weeks and we still do nothing. That along with only using 2 DL in the game at a time just shows how terrible our coaching staff truly is. Butler must go as the scapegoat and Tomlin must be ordered to stay out of the D and let the new D coordinator have the reigns. Sure, Tomlin can be the head coach and chime in, as needed, but the D needs to be left to the D coordinator and the O must be left to the O coordinator.

They do not have the talent or brains on defense to run ****. All of those great Steeler defenses under DL had great talent at key positions. NT,CB,LB,S...They're seriously lacking. They need to flush whatever bs he brought from Tampa down the toilet. They honestly have a much better chance of blitzing like mad with their linebackers vs putting them on ******* wide receivers...which with this group has to be the dumbest **** I have ever seen.

Bad drafting, horrible player development. They all look lost. Nobody even looks for the ball. I do see some improvements in tackling. That's about it.

I agree

Its not all about blaming scheme, thats a crutch for those apologists who think this defense is good enough to win games on their own

They are weak, soft up the middle with no playmakers, and full of stiffs

You know this, I know this, unfortunately our head coach that is paid millions a season does not know this.

Amen. By the way is Fort now a starter? He’s on the field a lot

It's kind of hard to tell how talented the defensive personnel are since the scheme is so ****** up. Hell you could have the best ILB in the game but he isn't going to be able to cover another teams #1 WR. Especially if he has to line up over him. No LB can do that.

The fact is that scheme is how you fool the QB or the WR into thinking you're doing something you are not. Put a LB over the WR then have another CB come over while bringing the safety down to cover the other CBs man.

The play by Burnett's against the raiders is one of the few notable plays made by our dbacks. They can't seem to find the ball. We can complain about our lbs covering wr's and or tight ends. But like Vader said. No lb can do it. We can't expect them to. It took an athlete of shaziers caliber to come close. We weren't able to replace him. Yet we're still asking Vince Williams at all to do it.

Haden, Heyward, Watt, Tuitt, Hargrave are the 5 best players on D and I'd probably put them in that order. These guys can ball, show heart/leadership and could start for other teams. The problem is the other 6-8 regular players on D are bad, not even serviceable, just not good football players. Burnett and Bostic were cast offs who underwhelmed since being in the league. Our #2 CB is a rotation of suck. Our safeties get burnt constantly, whiff on tackles, and rarely make splash plays you need from safeties (unless it's breaking up an INT from your own player). Durpee is Jarvis 2.0. Forte is a career special teamer who is sadly a "bright spot" all of a sudden.

But the sad thing is I don't even blame the players. They are constantly being put in horrible positions by the scheme. I'm sure if Bostic was told before signing "we're signing you because we think you can shut down Keenan Allen" he would've laughed his *** off to another team.

Hilton made a name for himself as a nickel/dime back confusing defenses because you didn't know if he was dropping in coverage or blitzing, the latter he was actually damn good at but NEVER is called on to do anymore. Or Vince Williams who is a decent run stopper and is best at blitzing up the middle...nah let's constantly drop him in coverage.

It was alluded earlier in this thread but there is zero creativity on blitz and/or coverage schemes and even with the lack of creativity when youre asking your below average defensive players to man up and beat the guy in front of them because we can't think of anything else better to do, they're being put in literally the worst posssible positions from the "base" scheme. It is idiotic and I've honestly never seen anything like it watching the Steelers for 20 years.

/Rant over
