How Pittsburgh kid Darrelle Revis could have been a Steeler

PITTSBURGH -- One of the most gifted cornerbacks of this generation grew up near Pittsburgh and nurtured his island within a few yards of Steelers personnel evaluators.

University of Pittsburgh football shares a practice facility with the Steelers, who were evaluating defensive players for the 15th overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft. Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and coach Mike Tomlin had seen All-American Darrelle Revis up close dozens of times before hosting him for a formal interview.

"They had more exposure to Darrelle than anyone," former Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt said. "Mike and Kevin could watch us practice from their desks."

As the Steelers and New York Jets prepare for Sunday's matchup in Heinz Field, back-to-back draft picks from nine years ago will help lead their respective defenses.

At No. 15 overall, the Steelers made a prudent pick with Lawrence Timmons, a former Pro Bowl linebacker with five 100-plus-tackle seasons and two missed games over his career. Timmons has validated the selection.

But when the Jets parachuted into the 14th selection via trade with the Carolina Panthers, some around the league believed they were blocking the Steelers from taking Revis, who's on his second stint with the Jets. Even Revis wondered about that, telling the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the night of the draft, "I figured I'd be going to the Steelers," an Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, native ready to give his hometown team years of coverage assurance in the AFC North.

After a Hall of Fame trajectory and nearly $120 million in career earnings, Revis giggles good–naturedly about the almost pairing when asked Wednesday during a conference call with Steelers media

Anybody think that, perhaps, he may have made so much of a difference that this team has at least one more ring? Now, obviously, who's to say he becomes the same player he is now had he been drafted here. But, got damn, those defenses with him could have seriously pushed for best of all-time.

Him and Polamalu and Taylor with that rush???? My God

With Revis and Ike, this team would have been insane! He'd be a huge upgrade over Townsend, though Gay probably wouldn't have been drafted that year. If he was, we would have grabbed our top CB and slot CB in the same draft!

Keisel Hampton A.Smith
Haggans Farrior Foote Harrison
Ike Clark Pola Revis

With Gay, Timmons, and Woodley as backups? That D can rival the 70s D for talent!

I often think about how this draft could have been different, as well as thinking about if we took Chris Johnson over Mendenhall, we may have won our 7th vs GB.

Timmons would have never been here if they drafted Revis. and neither would he, after his contract was up.they would have never paid him that much money. and really all the diva **** with him and his contract. i'm glad we didn't get him.

I agree but just the same the Steelers seem to be allergic to drafting Pitt players.

Man, they probably would have won two more. Seeing that on paper is just nasty. ******* jets.

I have no doubt he was going to be a Steeler had NY not jumped us and drafted him. Timmons has turned out to be a good player for us in the middle, but as we've seen its harder to get top tier corners than it is to get MLBs.

I think the marriage would have been short lived as some have stayed, STEELERS wouldn't have paid as much on second contract. Imagine though, just for a moment, on what could have been.

Salute the nation

According to the Tombert haters, Tommons would have lasted to the second. Woodley probably would have dropped too...

:P

One point about if we would have drafted Revis. Our D would still have been a #1 D most of those years. Revis probably wouldn't have had the INTs he got on lesser Ds since this D wouldn't have needed to rely on him to be effective or productive. He would have been viewed more as a product of the great system, and probably would have been resigned to a deal similar to what Timmons got.

It's all purely hypothetical speculation, but it's fun to think about.

Think it would have taken a little more than Timmons got.

Who's to say he would have definitely handled things the same way, both professionally and financially, had he stayed home in Pittsburgh, winning a Super Bowl or two in the process.

New York has a way of changing people.

Great point. Look at a guy like Kevin Greene, who was all over the place in his NFL career but showed how much he loved Pittsburgh. Look at how well DeAngelo Williams has fit in and really become a face of the team. Players love playing for this organization, so Revis certainly could have handled things differently.

As much as I hate going back on this game. The Steelers were kicking *** with that momentum until that fumble
