You might remember the uproar in DC 8 years ago, when Steeler Nation was so numerous and loud, that Jason Campbell had to go to a silent count in his home stadium. This being the opener, I would imagine the numbers won't be quite so large this time, but still, you know how we roll.

Who can forget? ;)

It appears the humiliation of having to go off a silent snap count at home didn’t go down so well with the Redskins back then, as the Washington Post reported after the game when talking to the players.

Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss was shocked by what he saw.

“I’m like are those yellow towels for us or for them? I really scratched my head about it, because I’ve never seen it done, especially at FedEx, to have someone come into our home and almost have more fans than we did.”

Redskins cornerback Fred Smoot clearly was upset with the home team fans, even if he wouldn’t say it directly.

“I’m disappointed. FedEx has never had that many other teams’ fans. I don’t know, it kind of shocked me when I seen all those terrible towels. I know Pittsburgh ain’t but a couple miles away from here, but we’ve got to keep them out of our place. I’m not disappointed on the fans, but somebody let ’em in there. It wasn’t me and I know it wasn’t Dan, so SOMEBODY let ’em in there.”

Redskins center Casey Ranch didn’t seem to know what was going on out there either.

“You expect to have your fans in the stands, not the opponents’, right?”

Even long term team reporters were surprised by the overwhelming numbers of Steeler Nation at the game, as Washington Post columnist George Solomon wrote:

“In 39 years of watching the Redskins play football in this area — at RFK Stadium and since 1997 in Landover — I’d never seen the team’s field taken over by visiting fans as it was that night”

Steelers fans take over FedEx Field during Redskins game
http://steelerswire.usatoday.com/20...Field&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=facebook

All week long the Washington Redskins had been preparing for the arrival of the Pittsburgh Steelers, both on and off the field. On Monday night they put their plans into effect and failed spectacularly in front of a national audience on each count.

Redskins owner Daniel Synder was so disturbed by the scenes he saw in the capital last time the two teams met, he was determined his stadium would not be filled by members of Steeler Nation and their Terrible Towels ever again.

Aside from making a minor dent in his wallet, the thousand of burgundy towels handed out at FedEx Field appeared to fall flat with the Redskins fans in attendance and the Pittsburgh crowd once again dominated proceedings, even before the game had begun.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">No shortage of Terrible Towels, <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Steelers?src=hash">#Steelers</a> fans in DC tonight <a href="https://t.co/OfuLVJH6mh">pic.twitter.com/OfuLVJH6mh</a></p>— Chris Bradford (@BCTBradford) <a href="https://twitter.com/BCTBradford/status/775469210948468737">September 12, 2016</a></blockquote>

As the Steelers began to pull away from Washington on the scoreboard in the second half, the Black and Gold faithful grew louder and stronger. By the time DeAngelo Williams had scored on a 15-yard touchdown run, Steeler Nation owned the stadium as the Redskins fans made an early dash for the exit.

Viewers at home who had tuned in late might have wondered if it was a home game in Pittsburgh given the chants of “here we go Steelers” that could be heard clearly from the crowd. Looking into the stands it was hard to pick out the burgundy from the sea of black shirts and yellow towels.

After the Mother of Redskins punter Tress Way had desecrated the sacred Terrible Towel in an effort to inspire her son, it was a foregone conclusion the evening would go as it did. You can be sure the Redskins national humiliation will be only the first of many misfortunes to hit Washington this season. The curse is a powerful thing after all.

Happily I was there 8 years ago. Great scene to have a steelers home game in DC. I remember the game opening with a failed on side kick.

It's cool to see Steeler Nation take over as such. What a sight. In that respect, I need to catch a Steelers game at heinz. My dad went to the inaugural game in 2001 against Cincinnati and got to go to one at three rivers. Me and the wife are big Pens fans though so definitely looking at a game at Consol in March

D.C. is one of the places a lot of Yinzers moved to in the 80's, plus it ain't real far. I remember looking for a job in the early 80's when steel mills were closing left and right. The Pittsburgh papers had maybe three pages of want ads and half of them were for nursing, meantime a local newsstand had the Washington papers and they had three whole friggen' sections of want ads for all kinds of things.

I did the exact same thing. I couldn't buy a job in 1983. I was working the grill at McDonalds, despite a college degree. I went to the library, and was leafing through the Washington Post, and when I saw the endless pages of want ads, I knew I had to make the move. Stayed 4 years, and had a lot of fun before I moved back. Still make the short drive down 3-4 times a year.

Keep in mind that Steeler territory extends quite a ways towards DC. Lots of Steeler fans in south central Pa., as well as western Maryland.

I've been twice. Two years ago in the regular season and last year in the playoffs. It's pretty great. Would go this year if it weren't for it being a night game.
